Colts - Saints

Admit Colts' D looked better than I expected, props to them. If they can continue that over the year, they are a very serious threat to repeat. And some dumb play-calling by NO also IMO. But freaking out about NO offense now is ridiculous. If I could trade for Brees, Bush AND Colston I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I also think Addai is an average back in an extremely above-average situation. He did nothing special, but didn't screw up much either, which should not be ignored. Very solid RB to have on your FF team.

 
Brees is a great QB when he gets protection (like just about every QB). When he doesn't, he throws off his back foot and makes big errors. He can be rattled.

Saints better hope the Colts D was just good at pressuring him. If he doesn't have much time to make throws, he's not enough of an improviser to make something out of nothing.

 
I drafted E. Johnson in the 9th and 11th rounds of my local drafts and got funny looks both times. I could have waited, but I HAD to have him.

I happened to be playing against Devery Henderson last season when he had his one HUGE game against Tampa. He had something like 24 points.... well over 100 yards and two long scores. That stuck in my head and I made it a point to get him on most of my teams.

Granted I didn't exactly sit Jerry Rice in his prime in order to start Henderson, but I did start him instead of Braylon Edwards and Patrick Crayton. If either of those guys has a big game this week, I'll be pretty pissed.

This is correct.Addai did fine, but with the terrible LB play of the Saints, anything less than 100 on 23 carries would have been a shocker. Addai did just fine, don't get me wrong, but this game doesn't answer the main questions. We'll know more in about 7-8 games; that's when we'll learn if he's still running strong midway through the season and has churned out yards against tough Ds. One thing I do know: saying he's arrived and will be fine all year off a game when New Orleans D looked like it barely got off the bus is too premature. He jumps and dances too much, and definitely runs too high, for me to believe he's a lock to keep this up all year. I think thats too harsh. I'm sure you watch with a more keen eye than mine, however, I thought I saw Addai slip through holes and move the pile on a regular basis. I can't think of a back in a more perfect situation than Addai (ok, maybe henry). He caught a couple of good passes out of the backfield too. I think Addai has a great year, top 5. That thought is not just based on tonites game, he showed his stuff down the stretch last year.
 
I attribute this night far less to Saints ineptitude, and much more to the Colts team. They absolutely kicked the hell out of them on both sides of the ball, offensively not so suprisinng(other than the great line push and protection after some questions) but their defense really caught my eye. We all know Dungy can coach D, it took some time to build the personel however, and it looks like he's got the horses. The Saints, Bush, Brees, et al are NOT bad, I still like them to go to the Bowl via home field in the NFC but the Colts are simply that good. The corners were in full shut down mode, and do not get excited for Eric Johnson off of tonight. In fact, if you own him, sell high, because I don't think other teams will be capable of holding down Colston, Henderson, Meachem and Patten. The Colts came to play tonight, and I'm going to attribute some of it to being jacked up playing before the banner raising home crowd, but if you see them get rolling, 5-0, 6-0, and nothing like reacting to the first thing you see, but I really like these guys to run the table.

The Pats have injury questions and I think are already showing chinks in the armour, and San Diego has to answer the Norv question. If things don't fall perfectly for either of those squads, a healthy Indy will absolutely roll them.

Even Kenton Keith showed some nice burst, which I think will be key as Addai takes his first full load. But between the usual suspects in Indy, and then support like

Clark, Utecht and Gonzalez as he matures and gets comfortable in nthe system.

NO D is atrocious. Playing Indy has something to do with that of course, but they simply make basic mistakes and where driven off the ball all game long by Indy's Oline. They also didn't manage any sort of pass rush. They made up with that lack of pass rush with 4 guys in the secondary who lack discipline and can't cover anyone.

Bush looked about as awful as I think he possibly could have. Maybe worse than he did in his 1st half of the season last year. He danced around far too much, dropped passes and looked easy to tackle. NO does not have the weapons in the passing game we all thought they did. Either that or Indy suddenly uncovered 4 pro bowlers in the secondary during the off-season. Brees looked timid. They constant pass rush at his feet may have had something to do with that. I don't think NO's Oline is as bad as they played tonight, maybe they just need to gel a bit.

Every player on Indy's O looked good, so I don't think we got any sort of realistic reads on the players we had questions about coming in. Addai looked solid, but so did his backup and there was no drop off when the unknown guy came in. That basically means Indy's Oline dominated the game... which they did.

I know Gonzalez had 0 catches in his rookie debut, but I found it telling that on 2 of his 3 plays in the game Manning looked to him first on them. He had his coverage beat deep down the seem for a huge play, but Manning over threw him badly. I still look for good things from him this year. NO played a style of D that was daring Indy to run the ball. It was smart to use Clark far more in the slot, not Gonzalez. Not all teams will allow Indy such an easy pass in the running game and Indy's coaches will use him when the situations are right.

Oh and despite what some people have tried to tell us, NO still has a turnstile playing at RCB this year.

M. Jackson, K Hayden, B. Sanders and A. Bethea accounted for 22 tackles - 13 assists. They punished the Saints receivers (just ask Johnson) and finished plays well. This group played much better than I previously thought they were capable.

Is it me or did Harrison fumble the ball that was returned for the TD by the Saints. None of the boxscores have him having a Fumble Lost, but I swear it was him! Any help?

That David isn't a cover corner.

Highlight real guys like Bush need more opportunities to make the highlight real.

Companies spend millions on advertising without most people remembering who the commercial is for. That one with Payton in the hotel vs. Miami, a cool looking short film, but what was it advertising besides Payton Manning and special effects designers?

The Saints LBs are horrible.

No matter how dark her pants are, they will never hide Kelly Clarkson's bulbous ###.

Payton will get painfully blindsided repeatedly this season, when they play better front 7s.

The Saints would have lost the Super Bowl.

And they need to run more screens to Reggie.

The Colts owner needs to stop asking color blind people to dress him.

You could trade Reggie Wayne for Reggie Bush straight up.

Eric Johnson will be must start TE in weeks the Saints play against zone coverage.

The Colts organization doesn't know how to create an electric atmosphere during pregame hype events.

This was at least partially due to the, um, creative performance of Jason David. Even Harrison's TD had David covering, so it looks like Manning was making sure to kick him around tonight, and much of the time he was on Wayne.

A better game? How could he not? 40 yards receiving and he'll top Henderson.As long as Crayton and Edwards don't go absolutely NUTS, I'll live. Peyton got me a nice cushion.

 
Kenton Keith looks like a decent handcuff.

The Saints abandoned the run too soon and should have tried to run Deuce down the Colts' throats.

 
I've said a couple of times before the Colts D was going to be improved based on what I saw in the pre-season - but - wow. Colts D will be really tough at home all year - I still want to see how they do in road games - but the Colts D didn't have one game all of last regular season that approached that (the closest was when they beat the Bengals at home after getting embarrased by Jax (375)).

Skippy Clueless actually said that the Saints were going to win tonight because they got Jason David. When will ESPN can him for incompetence?

David's on the left, Wayne's on the left. You do the math.Manning actually said in the intvw after that it was the first TD he could remember throwing to Marvin on the left side in years.

I thought Harrison still looked crisper and more polished than Wayne. But Wayne continued to draw the crappy coverage (David) and Manning looked his way.
 
The Saints O-line looked bad. They didn't do a good job at all. Brees wasn't sacked but he had no pocket to get set. Consequently, he threw quickly and on shorter routes. The Saints didn't throw deep. They didn't have a play until the final minute of the game that went downfield, in fact. You're not going to "out quick" the Colts defense, obviously, as they are a swarming fundamentally sound defense. Payton was outcoached on this one as much as anything. Bush still needs to learn how to simply run the ball instead of looking for a big play. I expect a very different Saints effort against Tampa. They have 10 days to prep and stew over this loss.

The Colts looked like they always do when they play well. Their line protected Peyton. If you don't challenge the Colts offense, they'll carve you up. This was vintage Manning-Dungy, I thought. They'll keep this up all season. Addai runs hard every time he touches the ball.

Exactly. Manning will throw the ball to whomever is open. Some weeks, it will be Wayne more than Harrison, and some weeks, it will be the other way around.
 
Addai looked like a young Edge tonight. He has that same side jump shift move that finds the opening for another 5-10 yds.

:thumbup: Everybody's talking about how bad David sucks, but he was left out on an island against superstar receivers. Lots of guys would fail in that situation.

i guess a portion of the blame could be blamed on the NO defensive coaches for not adjusting to Indy, but getting burned for 3 TDs, where 2 of the routes were exactly the same, is just plain unacceptable at this level... yes, david does suck...

I agree he's not there yet. But he showed some glimpses that reminded me of a young Edge. He has a few of the same moves.

Harrison actually did make a catch and fumble before the Wayne play, but the officials went with the usual default "incomplete" call.
 
-The Colts still have the best pass rushing D-end combo in the league.

-The Colts are still the best prepared team in the game.

-Marvin Harrison is the youngest looking 35year old WR in the history of the game.

-Joe Addai looks like a major stud in the making. His cuts, reads and burst were stellar.

-Tony Ugoh will eventually cost this team some wins....against a real D.

-Reggie Bush seemed anxious last night and still seems to be trying to play too fast.

-The Saints will miss the leadership of Joe Horn. He was the heart and soul of that team. And last night, they could have used him.

-Peyton Manning is looking like Indiana Jones. Now that the monkey is gone, he's on a quest for some more serious hardware.

-On the very first play of game, Joe Addai got hurt. And immediately we were exposed to the one flaw that Indy has......DEPTH. Not that the kid coming in for the next few plays did a bad job, but Indy has 12 rookies on their roster. And if they have to start couting on rookies to replace quality veterans at more than just a couple of positions, this team could be in trouble. For now, its not a factor. As the season transpires, it may.

Finally, the AFC just owns the NFC. New Orleans is a 10 win NFC team. Put them in the AFC and theyre not even in the playoff picture. In the NFC, theyre a Superbowl favorite. The New York Jets won 10 games in the AFC last year and I dont hear anyone talking about them winning the Superbowl. I dont want to get worked up too much about the World Champs blowing out an ill-prepared NFC team at home on opening night, but it just magnifies the differences in the two conferences. That somewhat close Superbowl contest in Miami last year was an aberration which would never have happened had it not been for a Devin Hester opening TD return and a monsoon. It'll be business as usual in the AFC this year. And once again, the AFC Championship game will, for all intents and purposes, be the real "big game".

 
Learned that when teams are taking away the deep ball, NO will pass a lot to the TE. I don't think Johnson sees 8 catches again all season unless teams are clearly trying to take away the deep ball.
