Commish Question (1 Viewer)

Fantaholic

Footballguy
I am the commissioner of a local league that we've been doing for a very long time, 20+ years. The league has 4 or 5 sharks and the rest are "baby sharks." They're certainly not guppies. I received a trade offer from one of the "baby sharks" offering me:

(Average Points Per Game for our scoring system in parenthesis)

Giving me

Derek Anderson (8.0)

AP (15.4)

Cooley (7.0)

Getting

JT O'Sullivan (14.6)

Larry Johnson (13.0)

Steve Slaton (16.5)

LJ Smith (2.4)

Isaac Bruce (10.4)

I accepted the trade and we started our new players in week 6. During the games yesterday one of the sharks in the league (and arch rival) posted a league-wide message jumping all over me that I should be ashamed as the commish of the league. Etc, etc, we went back and forth all day.

Those of you that are commissioners know that it is situations like this that make you want to pull your hair out. Please give me your honest opinions as to the validity of this trade given the circumstances provided. Thanks in advance.

I think we had a similar thread last week. You did nothing wrong. The only one who should be ashamed is "archrival".

not sure where i see the immature owner's stance. bump him down to guppy and chief whiner status.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the responses so far and would love some more thoughts. The arch rival is my brother-in-law and there were some pretty nasty things said back and forth. I really want to know if I am in the right here, or if I somehow have the blinders on.

actually, i'm usually intrigued with these situations. can you objectively see his point of view at all? maybe something happened before or after the deal?it's not that great of a trade, but it is hard to see someone acting like an 8 year old about it either.

I think the trade is fine. Not like you got AP for a bag of rocks. You'll always get some slack as a commish about trades, rules, etc. Don't sweat it, just ignore the guy.

he did get jt o'sullivan and cooley for a bag of rocks though. i agree with you, i'm just sayin'. :)

I'm trying to look at it objectively. It is difficult however when you're involved. As far as your other question is concerned. Are you asking if there is more to the story? What do you mean exactly?TIA

The true story here is - he didn't get AP and is not happy about it.

I think you gave a fair deal.

The deal was offered to you - and your response should be, "Sorry, but I think this deal does not work well for you and really only makes my team better - so I think I will pass."

WTF?

In my league, the two Super Bowl contestants vote on all trades. Trades almost never get rejected. Even the trade you listed - which isn't great - would have been approved. People will always whine about trades no matter how fair they are.

Lol, he did get LJ and Slaton, which I think is more than fair, esp if the guy had depth issues and was down on AP. I know you were jus saying.

take his 'griping' as a compliment and move on. One of the best traders in my league are constantly on each other's back about who bent who over with the vaseline.

Local leagues should have trade rules that take the Commissioner OUT of any judgment situations AND do not allow votes.

If the trade is legal according to your league's restrictions, then it is a valid trade.

On what basis does your BIL or anyone in the league think this is not a fair trade?

Now all that said, given you are the commissioner, why would you respond to random carping about the trade? Makes it a no win situation for you. IF the league protested you would have to deal with it as a commissioner. If a competitor doesn't like it, it's probably because they are mad they didn't get the player you did or because they think your team was strengthened because of the trade - as a competitor you don't care and as the commish you shouldn't be involved.

Sorry, got busy at work.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the trade, and it sounds like the majority here agrees.

I'm the commish of my league as well, and there's nothing I hate more than hearing people whine about trades. If you're in a long time league where everyone is competitive, then I think no trades should be vetoed.

He gets an up and coming RB (Slaton) and a lottery ticket (LJ) to replace an AP he's probably unhappy with. It looks like he didn't land one of the suprises (Rodgers, Cutler, Rivers) to back up Anderson and needs a servicable QB. No idea who his 2nd TE is but unless you have Witten it doesn't matter a whole lot anyway. You get an upgrade at RB as far as we know, and a TE who can finish at the top of the after-Witten group. There's also a possible bye week filler WR involved who I don't think matters much.

Seems both owners involved got players they like/can use. It sounds like you and your brothers (and the 3rd party) just have varying impressions of potential in the players involved.

Did you break a rule? Are trades typically subject to review, but you pulled an end-around as commissioner? If not, tell BIL to ####

trade is OKarguing over FF is ridiculous, specially with a family member

I commish two leagues and wouldn't think twice about approving this deal. He gets two RBs with high potential, you get one with even higher potential. He also improves at TE/QB.

The rest of the details? If your married to his sister, slap her on the #### once tonight for giving you grief.

actually, i think the OP getting the slaton and larry johnson side of the deal? correct me if i'm wrong here.

According to the FBG top 250 forward (week 6), you get an absolute value of 3078, he gets 2128. Compensated by the fact that he gets more actual starters. (AP's two so-so performances in the last two weeks has probably lowered his value somewhat). It's an unremarkable trade

Nothing smelling of colusion here.

Personally I think you got ripped off. No idea how AP is still so overrated after such awful games all year.

Slaton/LJ is more than enough for AP as it is

You say no guppies in your league... well you know the old poker saying: "If you can't spot the sucker at the table, you are the sucker"

Hard to judge the trade without depth charts. But I think you gave up way too much for an overrated name. He had 3 good games last year. He's a RB version of Chad Johnson...

Tell me how you really feel  But seriously, your words here further confirm to me that this trade should be a non-issue.

Please post lineups for both teams.

Also: how many teams? Redraft, keeper, dynasty? How many starters at each position?

Fair trade. He upgrades both of his RBs and you upgrade your RB and possibly your TE. If you weren't so stacked I'd say that the other guy got the better end of the deal, but you can afford to give up all those players.

Tell your BIL, "hey bud when you draft well and accumulate depth to spare, maybe you'll get offers like this too."

And as Burrows pointed out earlier, which guy's doinking the other's sister matters a lot here.
