According to Mike Wise of the Washington Post, however, a surprise could be coming. Wise says, via Twitter, that Roethlisberger will get five games.

So, if true, does that mean he can't practice with the Steelers over the team's bye week (week 5) because he isn't off suspension yet? I was always thinking 4 games and then he'd be able to practice over the bye week and be ready to go week 6. But, if he can't practice, until after the 5th game then that all goes out the window.

Also, I wonder why the suspension only went down 1 game?

why what? Goodie is the commissioner and he decided on 5 games. Everything else was speculative.

I understand that he has the discretion. However, Goodell has always been open to reducing it to 4 games. If he decides on 5, there is some reason why he didn't want to give Ben a full reduction to 4 games. So, if he does get reduced to 5 games, it would be interesting to know why Goodell only gave him a 1 game reduction. There would have to be some concern by him about how Ben has progressed since his suspension. (i.e. hasn't hit all of the desired criteria of getting a 2 game reduction). I guess we'll find out for sure soon since he is meeting with Ben on Friday.

No, he never said he was open to a reduction to 4 games. Goodie never shows his hand. You heard the 4 games from beat writers, espn types and places like this message board. it was always speculation, like in the mold of brandon marshall last year.

Tomlin just said he has heard absolutely nothing new regarding the suspension. There has been so much misinformation this preseason that I'll believe it when I hear it from Goodell.

That said I think a guy never charged with a crime getting more than 4 games is excessive when there are other guys in the league getting into fights at bars & strip clubs and not getting suspended at all.

I know many Steeler fans love their QB, but I find Ben's behavior with women more disturbing than fights in bars and strip clubs, even though he has never been charged with rape.

I don't know what really happened between Ben and those women, but he hasn't been convicted of any crime. I guess I could hate him and call him a rapist based on circumstantial evidence that wasn't strong enough to file charges, but I'd rather just admit I don't know what happened and probably never will and leave it at that. He may be a rapist... but he may not be. Not a Steeler fan but I enjoy watching him play - he's a great QB.

:goodposting: Sums it up for me too...

As a Steeler fan, all I know is what I see on TV and read. I don't know the guy. If I thought he were truly a rapist, I could never root for him, no matter how much he apologized for it. To me, rape, murder, child abuse and wife abuse are beyond my ability to forgive. But my impression this whole time has been that Big Ben is not a rapist, he is simply a social idiot. I suspect that because so many women have thrown themselves at him he thinks that is the status quo. He has behaved like a jerk, and incredibly immature. For that I'm willing to forgive him. Unless I learn differently.

Roethlisberger five game suspension report was a hoax

According to Mike Wise of the Washington Post, his earlier report of a five game suspension of Ben Roethlisberger was a hoax as part of a bit on his show today, he was trying to show the inaccuracy of reporting in the social media.

Unfortunately, he damaged his own credibility by doing so. He may have made his point that sites like this, Profootballtalk.com, and others rely on responsible media outlets and journalists as credible sources but that is what we do, we aggregate the news from some of the very best sports journalists in the country.

In our headline we use the following headline: Report: Roethlisberger suspension to be reduced to five games . Many times we do this if we are unsure of the source or accuracy of the report we have read and we somehow had a feeling this one was somewhat shaky.

Perhaps next time on his radio show Mr. Wise might want to play "War of the Worlds" just to see what kind of reaction he gets from his listeners.

Was it a hoax?

Yes we will be rooting for him just like you root for Belicheat and his womanizing sinner ways and the same way Ravens fans root for Ray Lewis and Donte Stallworth and on and on around the league. If you are looking for a moral compass from athletes than you will be sadly misled.

Now that Judge Adebisi has convicted Big Ben of rape I have changed my mind and am in favor of locking Roethlisberger up for 20 years. I have no idea why we bother with the US judicial system when we have legal wizards like Adebisi around that know exactly what happened despite not being there, not speaking to anyone that was, and not having examined any physical and medical evidence in the case.

Just as you give him a complete pass no matter what happend, others give him no quarter at all. The truth is somewhere in the middle. He's probably not worthy of the free pass you give him, nor is he probably a serial rapist. He's somewhere between those extremes.

Who's really being punished here? Roethlisberger spends a month in Arizona or Florida eating steaks and throwing on the side a few hours a day to handpicked receivers. The team and the fans get to suffer through 4 weeks of Leftwich and his concrete shoes or Dixon and his affinity for heaving the ball into the arms of opposing corners.

Ben should have been fined and/or made to do community service on behalf of the NFL. You want to mandate treatment programs, etc? Fine. But suspending him was the wrong move.

Aren't you charming. You probably have as much respect for women as Ben.

You have to be pretty damn misogynistic to offend me. Congrats, steelcityman!

Well said. Unfortunately the Shark Pool tends not to tolerate shades of gray.

If you would look back on my posts during the investigation I didn't give him a free pass. I was critical of his behavior but I think calling him a rapist when the facts in the case led to no charges being filed and the DA stating there isn't enough evidence for probable cause is a low-blow. Ben has put himself in some bad situations so I suppose he has a few shots coming but I don't think Steelers fans deserve to take the heat.

Why wouldn't we cheer for the team he represents? I'm not going to be disloyal to a team that I grew up loving just because of something that ONE guy allegedly did. I'm sure you can't understand that being a fan of a squeaky clean organization such as the Pats though............. :lmao:

Is there any way to get the title of this thread changed, seeing as it's a confirmed hoax and the discussion has moved away from what the length of the suspension may or may not be?

I'm closing this thread. For those who are confused about the type of discourse we expect on the FBG's boards, please refer to this post from Joe Bryant: URGENT - Please Read.

All y'all, please use a respectful tone with each other when discussing NFL news, even the unsavory/disgusting sort of news/rumor/innuendo that has surrounded Ben Roethlisberger this year.

TIA. MW
