Confusion in the league I commish (1 Viewer)

I had an honest mistake in the posting of the rules...see below to the email I sent out

Here's the deal. When I set the league up, the rules for the tiebreakers like below

1. Overall winning %

2. Most Points For, Season To Date

3. Head to Head Games Played (2 teams only)

In week 9, I sent an email stating that the tiebreakers were:

1. Head to Head

2. Points Scored

I hadn't realized that the league site was set up for Points Scored to come before head to head. This was an honest mistake by me. It sucks that this has to come out now like this.

I really think the right thing to do is to go with the rules that were established from the beginning that have been posted on the site since week 1. If I hadn't posted the incorrect tiebreakers, than this really wouldn't be an issue right now, as the actual outcome of the games wouldn't have changed.

I realize this is a friendly league, and I feel like #### for posting the wrong tiebreakers, but I thought the site was set up for the head to head to be the first tiebreaker (like other leagues). Mike - I apologize for the confusion when you called the other day, I honestly had no idea that the tiebreaker rules were posted (on the first link above) on the website.
This doesn't effect me at all, b/c I'm already in the playoffs, but it does effect the last playoff spot. Player A actually beat Player B twice during the season, but Player B was put into the playoffs b/c he had 6 more points. As a commish, I stand by the bolded statement only b/c it was in the original rules. If I take the comimish hat of though, I have to side with the Player A b/c he won twice.

Did I do the right thing?

well you can't change the rules now........you live with the mistake and make sure you change them before the season starts next year.

Yes, it is appropriate to fall back on the rules provided at the beginning of the season. I'd personally take the position that a clerical mistake on your behalf cannot change league rules; a league vote or some other formal change process would need to occur.

You always side with the rules that were written down before the season started. You made a mistake, you owned up to it, that's life. In the end you fall back on the rules as they were written. If you DONT do that, you'll have another thread by a guy complaining about his comissioner changed the rules IN MIDSEASON WITHOUT WARNING. That's a cardinal sin. Is making an honest mistake worse than changing the rules on a whim in the middle of the season?

Great point....I'm actually taking people's thoughts from these posts and constructing a nice email. Keep em coming!

h2h sucks as a tiebreaker
although it's kind of off-topic, i was thinking the exact same thing. A h2h tie-breaker means nothing in terms of who the better fantasy team is. If team A outscored team B by 100's of points over the course of the season, can anyone really say team B is "better" or "more deserving of a playoff spot" just because team B happen to beat team A on a couple of weeks when team A's team had injury or bye problems or whatever? In a game like fantasy football where nobody can play defense, H2H tiebreakers (at least as the first tiebreaker above things like total points or season record) makes no sense.

This is a very basic local league where over 50% of the owners don't give a ####. There is no way I'm going to commish this thing next year, and probably won't play.
