So neither Vitalogy or No Code made the list…..wow. I like Vs. but I think those two are better albums. Yield shoulda made it as well, imo

As a Brit it's interesting seeing 11 or 12 (depending on how you class Fleetwod Mac) of the top 15 albums are British/Irish. I gave some thought as to how the list would work out if you carried out a similar survey in Britain with a similarly weighted list of responders...so I'm thinking overwhelmingly male, and white people aged say 30-60 over-represented, but there will obviously be plenty of other sampling biases at play eg response bias as people who take music seriously are clearly more likely to respond.

The main thing I'd say is, i think there would be fewer of the prog rock types...don't get me wrong I think Dark Side Of the Moon would still be top 10, but probably the only Floyd one that high, because I think culturally the punk thing over here probably had a more lasting and profound negative effect on the popularity of the big 1970s behemoths such as Floyd, Led Zep etc.

So I think if you did a similar survey over here, you'd probably get a similar number of British bands in the top 20, but certainly the first two Oasis LPs, possibly the first 2 Joy Division LPs, and at least 1 Smiths LP (probably The Queen is Dead) would be in there.

The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973 by Capitol Records in the US and on 16 March 1973 by Harvest Records in the UK. Developed during live performances before recording began, it was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and also deal with the mental health problems of the former band member Syd Barrett, who had departed the group in 1968. New material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London.
I’m so glad you didn’t prank us with a Captain and Tennille or Carpenters album as #1, but the board meltdown would have been epic.

Again, thank you for all of your work on this. Also, many thanks for the side projects that you added, such as highest ranking single entry or multiple entries that still didn’t make it. You went above and beyond the call of duty on this project. You should relax and down a beer or two! 👍🏻👍🏻🍻

Some surprising omissions:

I really thought there would be more My Morning Jacket and Wilco with this crowd, for whatever reason. But I guess some bands were hurt by self-imposed one album per artist rule.
Neil Young - Live Rust.
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible.
Ben Folds Five - self titled.

Albums I chose not as loved as others.

1969: Velvet Underground Live with Lou Reed - Velvet Underground - 49 - was hoping to sneak What Goes On into the playlist
A Salty Dog - Procal Harum - 39 - A truly great album. Wish it would have gotten more love.
Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me The Pliers - Firesign Theater - 38 - No Porgie Tirebiter or Bear Whiz Beer for y'all
Elephant Mountain - The Youngbloods - 37 - an obscure gem
Headstones - Teeth & Tissue - 36 - hard rock at its finest
Uncle Anethesia - Screaming Trees - 33 - I don't often play the role of online grunge snob, but when I do...
Kerosene Hat - Cracker - 32 - Eurotrash Girl was pick here
dwightyoakamacoustic.net - Dwight Yoakam - 31 - Nothing but Dwight's voice and an acoustic guitar. It's lovely
Satellite Rides - Old 97s - 30
Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus - Nick Cave - 29
The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You - Neko Case - 28
Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs - Andrew Bird - 27
Doug Sahm and Band - Doug Sahm - 26 - the Wu Tang Clan of Texas musicians from back in the day
More a Legend Than a Band - The Flatlanders - 25
Teenager of the Year - Frank Black - 24 - relentless
Sounds From The Fourth World - Calvin Russell - 23
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams - 21 - Wow worthy
Lubbock (on Everything) - Terry Allen - 18 - the early seeds of alt-country
American Water - Silver Jews - 17
Veedon Fleece - Van Morrison - 16
Pretenders II - The Pretenders - 12 - the Pretenders don't get enough credit for the broad influence they've had on rock music.
Traffic - Traffic - 7
Band on the Run - Wings - 6 - Must have fallen in a lot of people's 71-100 rankings
Boatman's Call - Nick Cave - 5
Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera - 3
Key Lime Pie - Camper Van Beethoven - 2

I am surprised that more 90s hip-hop/rap didn't make the list. Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, etc. Not obscure acts. I would think that the ages that I would guess most of you would have been in during the 90s (like mid 20s), there would have been more. I could be judging this wrong though.

Of these, I had both Sly’s Stand and Galaxie 500’s On Fire on my list too.

Here are my remaining albums that missed the top 350 that haven’t been called out yet:

23 - 3 Feet High and Rising - De La Soul
24 - Foxtrot - Genesis
45 - Aquemini - Outkast
58 - Run the Jewels 2 - Run the Jewels
59 - I Just Can’t Stop It - The English Beat
65 - A Farewell to Kings - Rush

3 Feet High is the ultimate party album - fun from start to finish.

Foxtrot has the #1. 6, 7, and 11 songs in my MAD Genesis countdown.

The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by the Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, and was released on 9 March 1987 by Island Records. In contrast to the ambient experimentation of their 1984 release, The Unforgettable Fire, the band aimed for a harder-hitting sound within the limitation of conventional song structures on The Joshua Tree. The album is influenced by American and Irish roots music, and through sociopolitically conscious lyrics embellished with spiritual imagery, it contrasts the group's antipathy for the "real America" with their fascination with the "mythical America".

I’m impressed by the diversity of the drafting group on this one. Lots of people with frequently different tastes.
It was the biggest deal in music when many of us were in those crucial years of developing our own tastes. Given how intensely I felt about this album when I was in high school, I probably should have ranked it higher, but I don't listen to it as much as I used to. It has three of my very favorite U2 songs in Where The Streets Have No Name, Bullet the Blue Sky and Exit.

The problem I ran into was this being an albums draft. As it turns out I don't consume my hip-hop via albums, just songs. A lot were on my original list, but almost none made it to the final 70.

Albums I was top ranker on:

1 - Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
2 - Paul’s Boutique - Beastie Boys
3 - Fragile - Yes
12 - Ill Communication - Beastie Boys
14 - Purple - Stone Temple Pilots *
21 - Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche
22 - The Colour and the Shape - Foo Fighters
29 - Odelay - Beck

* missed the top 350 but it was my top that missed the cut so we still added these to the playlist at the start

The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on 8 November 1971, by Atlantic Records. It was produced by the band's guitarist, Jimmy Page, and recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, mostly in the country house Headley Grange. The album contains one of the band's most well-known recordings, the eight-minute-long "Stairway to Heaven".
Teenage me thought this was one of the greatest things ever and might have ranked it #2 behind Who's Next. Over time I gravitated to Physical Graffiti more, but that takes nothing away from the accomplishment of this record. I even grew to appreciate the two acoustic songs more; I wasn't as interested in them as a teen.

My albums that didn't make the list, grouped with commentary:

The Ladies:

13 - Tidal - Fiona Apple
21 - Exile in Guyville - Liz Phair
43 - Live Through This - Hole
53 - Rites of Passage - Indigo Girls

A little bit surprised by the first two missing it. Love them both and and of all the albums I listened to while making this list, Exile in Guyville is the one I've been replaying the most since I submitted my list. I'd probably put it in the Top 15 if I re-did my list.
Ms. Love is clearly controversial, but I think this is a great album.
I believe a different Indigo Girls album made the list but I prefer Rites of Passage or maybe 1200 Curfews for their live stuff.

Alternative Favs:

16 - Grave Dancers Union - Soul Asylum
24 - Vivid - Living Colour
26 - Where You Been - Dinosaur Jr
54 - New Miserable Experience - Gin Blossoms
59 - Love - The Cult

These are all alternative/90s favorites of mine that I really like but am not surprised didn't make the list.

"Big" Artists:

23 - Pearl Jam (Avocado) - Pearl Jam
25 - Live Rust - Neil Young
35 - Scarecrow - John Mellencamp
41 - Rattle and Hum - U2
50 - Slowhand - Eric Clapton
55 - Vitology - Pearl Jam
60 - Mother's Milk - Red Hot Chili Peppers
62 - Smile - Brian Wilson

These are all well know artists that likely had some other albums make the list. I know most people don't like Live Rust and Rattle and Hum, but I do. I know the Beach Boys version of Smile made it but I actually prefer Brian's version of it.

Genre:

20 - Blue Train - John Coltrane
34 - Sketches of Spain - Miles Davis
45 - Couldn't Stand the Weather - Stevie Ray Vaughan
47 - Live at the Regal - B.B. King
51 - Lonesome, On'ry and Mean - Waylon Jennings
61 - Damn Right I've got the Blues - Buddy Guy
69 - Copperhead Road - Steve Earle

These are all from different music genres that aren't really in the wheelhouse of this forum. Or at least, I don't think so. The first three artists still made the list, just different albums.

Smaller Artists I Love:

19 - Klinefelter - Clockhammer
This is a alternative/prog/metal band from Nashville that I really love. They only made a few albums before splitting up. For you Wilco fans, their drummer was Ken Coomer, who went to Uncle Tupelo with Tweedy and then joined Wilco for their first 3 or 4 albums.

44 - Truth and Soul - Fishbone
Such a fun band and fun album. Followed them with a few friends for a week or two the summer before I went to college. Funky soul and rock.

65 - Carousel - Will Hoge
Great country/pop/folk singer. My wife used to see him a lot in Atlanta before we met. I've grown to really enjoy his music.

70 - Eric Gales Band - Eric Gales Band
Eric Gales is a great rock/blues guitarist. Reminds me of Vernon Reid with Living Colour. This is his debut album.

Last 10 out of my list, in no particular order:

Gangsta's Paradise - Coolio
Thriller - Michael Jackson
Document - REM
It Takes a Nation of Millions - Public Enemy
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Hamilton Soundtrack - LMM
Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette
Gordon - Bare Naked Ladies
Rubber Soul - Beatles
Sign O' The Times - Prince (when he was a symbol)

TL;DR - Thanks for doing this Dr O.

Rumours is the eleventh studio album by the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 4 February 1977, by Warner Bros. Records. Largely recorded in California in 1976, it was produced by the band with Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut. The recording sessions took place as the band members dealt with breakups and struggled with heavy drug use, both of which shaped the album's direction and lyrics.:headbang:
Great record. What I am surprised about is that its predecessor, the self-titled 1975 album, is just as great and was nearly as popular, and got no support here. Both albums are among the peaks of mid-70s mainstream rock. I didn't vote for either of them, but I can see why people voted for this one, and might have voted for the other one had Mac been one of those more-than-one-album-on-the-ballot bands, which with this bunch they were not.

Here are mine that did not make the cut, or posted by Dr. O as highest/lowest out or random solo or double-ups. I’ll organize by music genre (number is rank, not points assigned).

Brazil - I was not expecting any of these to show, but MADs know my love of the mix of Brazilian samba with western rock.

10 - A Tabua de Esmeralda - Jorge Ben
15 - Tim Maia (1973) - Tim Maia
17 - Acabou Chorare - Novos Baianos
36 - Tropicalia: Ou Panis et Circenses - Various Artists
46 - Clube de Esquina - Milton de Nascimento & Lo Borges
52 - Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes

Africa - Same on not expecting any of these to show, but MADs know that I had to rank anyway. Some of these more collections, but whatever.

35 - Life Stories: Highlife and Afrobeat Classics, 1973-1980 - Ebo Taylor
37 - World Psychedelic Classics, Volume 3: Love’s a Real Thing - Various Artists
43 - Africa - Amanaz
59 - Try and Love - Ofege
65 - 24 Hours in a Disco: 1978-82 - Kiki Gyan

R&B/Soul/Blues/Motown - I think a number of these others might listen more to collections than albums. I expect some splitting on albums with some of these. I know we got Aretha’s “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” during the countdown.

26 - Pastel Blues - Nina Simone
31 - Spirit in the Dark - Aretha Franklin
44 - Everything is Everything - Donny Hathaway
47 - Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
48 - The Real Folk Blues - Muddy Waters
53 - Ain’t That Good News - Sam Cooke
54 - Going to a Go-Go - Smokey Robinson
57 - A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector - Various Artists
62 - Where Did Our Love Go - The Supremes

Jazz - Did get some other Miles show up. I don’t think had any Ella or Louis.

41 - Sketches of Spain - Miles Davis
51 - Ella & Louis - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

1990ish - Present - I know Landry posted Galaxie 500 too. Some other Vampire Weekend showed up. And Black Keys looked like an album split.

19 - On Fire - Galaxie 500
42 - Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? - The Cranberries
63 - El Camino - The Black Keys
69 - Modern Vampires of the City - Vampire Weekend

Classic Rock Era - Fleetwood Mac and T. Rex showed up with other albums. Sly seemed to have a split between his two big classics.

33 - Stand! - Sly & The Family Stone
39 - Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
55 - The Slider - T. Rex
67 - New York Dolls - New York Dolls

A very pleasant surprise to see this land where it did. Knew it was headed for the top 15, but didn't think this high. I had it #20 and probably was too low. What a stunning accomplishment by a band that took all its negative energy and turmoil and made one of the best pop albums in history. And this coming off its fantastic self-titled album just a few years prior.

Not a weak song in the bunch - and yet one outstanding tune that didn't make the original pressing ("Silver Springs") could arguably top them all.
Of the Rumours songs, I think Gold Dust Woman is the only one better than Silver Springs.

Of their many sources of tension, one of the biggest was that Buckingham refused to allow Silver Springs onto the Rumours tracklist, relegating it to a B-side, and Nicks never forgave him for it. Later pressings do have it, as they should.
