Just checking the math here and an album ranked 40th to 45th by 3 different people will score higher than an album ranked #1 by just one person.
That kinda sucks.
Rewards quantity not quality.
And i have no solutions unless its something like #1 =140 points, #2 = 130 points, #3 = 120 points…..#8 = 75 points……until it matches the original. Or have the spread go to #25 or something.

A smaller list reduces the swing I think but then the only problem with that is everyone but me will have the same top 20-25 albums or at least that's my assumption. Maybe you do 50 and the top 25 will be points based and the bottom half is based on the number of people that sent the album in so if The Iceland Mysteries got 4 rankers (and that's more than any other album) it'll be # whatever after all the points based ones.

I love how you stick to your guns about the scoring. Your game, your rules. I'm in and putting my list together now. I thought I would have a hard time getting to 70, but I'm way over and now it's time to chop it down. Ok, I was talking to Doc this morning and when the countdown fires up, I am going to make a Spotify playlist as we go. Here is what I am thinking:

• if only one person rated the album, they get to choose ONE song from the album to put on the playlist.
• If there is multiple rankings, the person who rated it the highest gets to choose the ONE song to go on the playlist.
• If there is a tie in the rankings, we roll the bones to break the tie an that person gets to pick the ONE song from the album that goes onto the playlist.

In the last few of these countdowns, it seems the person with the highest rating posted about the entry, so they could just do a post about the album and post the song in there. We thought any more than one song/album was going to get a bit outrageous for actually listening to the playlist.

It could easily turn into a greatest hits playlist for The Beatles, Stones, Floyd, and Zeppelin type bands, so I get the concern. I am open to other suggestions, or maybe we just try to encourage some deeper cuts from some if the albums we know will be on there.

MAYBE the person with the highest score has the option to replace it with a song/album that didn't make the countdown somehow? From their highest ranking album that didn't make the top 300, perhaps. For eample, if i ranked Dark Side the highest i could take a song off that or my #2 album that i know will not make the countdown.

How would someone know it will not make the countdown?

Most of these countdowns have started with a list of highest rated X not on the final countdown. Maybe we just use that as an option for a one time switch?

Also by the time we get to the top 40-50 we probably know our odd ball random album isn't showing up.

I have my first 50 down and i expect about 10 to show up in the end.

We have 6 lists in and at this point we have a major consensus for the Top album.

It's made 5 of the 6 lists and has an average score (per list) of 62.6 and currently has a 116 point lead on the second place album.

The top of the list is classic rock heavy, but not necessarily the ones you would expect.

Also the album I thought had the best chance to finish #1 received it's first mention and got 4 points.

I don't have the dates listed on submissions and I'm not familiar with every album submitted, but I believe there are a few - there's surely a bunch of post-2000 albums submitted.

I’m of the opinion that music keeps getting better and better since newer artists build off of what worked in prior generations. This is certainly an unpopular opinion though!

Of course I disagree. I was surprised how many post 00s albums and music I had on there. Outside of MAD activity, I think 70% of my listening is 70s and 00s+. I am more in line with 80s above, but I also have been listening to a bit more hip hop and electronic type of music in my old age as well.

I went down a deep electronic hole while Avicii was still with us. Raising a child now 26 forced me to explore hip hop. I tried. I'm open minded. I just don't like hip hop. It's not very musical. Very poetic. Art is subjective and it is fine art, but I love talented musicians and want to hear them play. Hip hop doesn't do that for me. Respect the poetry and the difficulty of beat making, but there's too many talented musicians to follow for me to care anymore.

Right now I have 3 jazz albums ahead of my favorite PF, and just reminded myself I really like a P!nk album. Curses. I should bow out of this and save myself the trouble.

Well first off I AM an old man (turning 60 in a few weeks.)
But I don’t think I’ve cut myself off from the last 35 years. There’s plenty of great stuff out there. It’s just not AS good, IMO.

When I selected my 70 TV shows it was exactly the opposite: something like 95% of my picks were 21st century. That’s because I believe that we are currently living in the Golden Age of Television and that it began, generally, with The West Wing and the Sopranos. The golden age of popular music, IMO, was generally between 1968 and 1982. The golden age of paintings was between 1870 and 1945, roughly.
