Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 68. Automatic for the People – R.E.M. (218 Viewers)

119 (tie). #1 Record – Big Star (196 points)

@krista4 #7 :headbang:
@landrys hat #17
@Eephus #26
@simey #38

#1 Record is the debut studio album by the American rock band Big Star. It was released on April 24, 1972, by Memphis-based Ardent Records.

Many critics praised the album's vocal harmonies and songcraft but #1 Record suffered from poor distribution and sold fewer than 10,000 copies upon its initial release. However, #1 Record gained wider attention in the late 1970s in the UK when EMI reissued it with Radio City as a double LP package due to increasing demand. The same combination was used when the album was released on CD in 1992. It is now widely-regarded as a seminal work in pop rock and power pop. In 2020 it was ranked number 474 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Rolling Stone also ranked the song "Thirteen" as number 406 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It was voted number 188 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000).

Hey, I get to choose one! I wonder what I might choose... :)

I had a near-miss on Grace. I hope @ConstruxBoy chooses wisely. :lol: My favorites are Last Goodbye and Lover, You Should've Come Over.
Lover would definitely be my choice from Grace.
That's what I was going to pick. Can someone please add Lover, You Should've Come Over to the playlist?
Added.

Damn, I'm still not finding the "add" button to put my selection on the playlist. I'm dumb. @Pip's Invitation , you know which one I want. :)
Under the title of playlist there should be an oval with “add +” in it.

It's not there. This is bizarre.

I go to the song on the album on Spotify (phone app version).
Click the ... to the right of the chosen song.
Click the + Add to playlist option
Click the desired playlist you want to add to.

But the other way also works for me, again from the phone app. :shrug:

Superunknown is the fourth studio album by American rock band Soundgarden, released on March 8, 1994, through A&M Records. Produced by Michael Beinhorn and the band themselves, Soundgarden began work on the album after touring in support of their previous album, Badmotorfinger (1991). Superunknown retained the heaviness of the band's earlier releases while displaying a more diverse range of influences.

Superunknown was a critical and commercial success and became the band's breakthrough album. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 310,000 copies in its opening week.

Pyromania is the third studio album by English rock band Def Leppard, released on 20 January 1983 through Vertigo Records in UK and Europe and through Mercury Records in the US. The first album to feature guitarist Phil Collen who replaced founding member Pete Willis, Pyromania was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The album was a shift away from the band's traditional heavy metal roots toward a more radio-friendly sound, finding massive mainstream success. Pyromania charted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, No. 4 on the Canadian RPM Album chart and No. 18 on the UK Albums Chart. Selling over ten million copies in the US, it has been certified diamond by the RIAA

Yep, there's just something weird here. I can't do it that way, either. I saved it in my library. I can see it's in my library. When I get to the song and try to add to a playlist, it doesn't give me this one as an option to add it to, nor does it come up in a search of my playlists. But on the My Library page, it's there.

Oh well, will just continue to rely on the kindness of strangers. Could someone please put The Ballad of El Goodo on there, if you haven't already?

Big Star was a band I wanted on my list but I had a hard time choosing one. Overall I prefer the weird, dark imperfections of Third/Sister Lovers. It's a difficult listen but that's what I love about it.

Did you get the special link that invites you to edit? That’s what messed me up earlier. I had the link to the playlist but somewhere else there was a link posted that allows you editing access.

Oh, OK. I'm just using the link in the first post. Maybe that's not the one?

The other day "Rock of Ages" came on the radio, and there was about 15 seconds left in the song when I reached my destination, so I waited for the "We're gonna burn this damn place down, woohoo, down to the ground." 🔥

Grace is the only studio album by the American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, released on August 15, 1994 in Europe and on August 23, 1994 in the United States by Columbia Records. It was produced by Buckley and Andy Wallace.

After moving from Los Angeles to New York City in 1991, Buckley amassed a following through his performances at Sin-é, a cafe in the East Village, and signed to Columbia in 1993. He recorded Grace in Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, with musicians including Gary Lucas, Mick Grondahl, Michael Tighe and Matt Johnson. It includes versions of the jazz standard "Lilac Wine", the hymn "Corpus Christi Carol" and the 1984 Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah".
When this came out I was all about grunge and jam bands (and Neil), so I didn’t “get it.” During my Lost Years, I got it. One of the best vocal performances on a rock album. Narrowly missed my top 100.

@krista4 does this work?

Gahhhh, I thought it was going to, because it popped up saying I'd been invited to collaborate, and I "joined" the playlist. But still I can't add through any of the methods described.

Sorry for so many posts about this in the thread. Let's just give up. I probably won't be the high ranker on many other albums anyway. I really do appreciate so many people trying to help!

It's been my experience that Spotify acts like a petty, vindictive ex after you cancel a subscription. Nuisance logins, playlists don't work (here's something random for you instead), and so on.
Also no 30 minutes of free listening, although they will still play the ad saying “now, enjoy 30 minutes of uninterrupted listening” only to play 3 minutes of ads again after the next song.

I’m more of an iTunes guy as I prefer the interface and it has better sound quality. I just use Spotify for the playlists here, but currently subscribing to both (look at me as a big spender, I guess). I may cancel again with the MAD break, although been listening to albums playlist now.

In Rainbows is the seventh studio album by the English rock band Radiohead. It was self-released on 10 October 2007 as a download, followed by a retail release internationally through XL Recordings on 3 December 2007 and in North America through TBD Records on 1 January 2008. It was Radiohead's first release after their recording contract with EMI ended with their album Hail to the Thief (2003).

The Unforgettable Fire is the fourth studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and released on 1 October 1984 by Island Records. The band wanted to pursue a new musical direction following the harder-hitting rock of their previous album, War (1983). As a result, they employed Eno and Lanois to produce and assist in their experimentation with a more ambient sound. The resulting change in direction was at the time the band's most dramatic. The album's title is a reference to "The Unforgettable Fire", an art exhibit about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

1984 (stylized in Roman numerals as MCMLXXXIV) is the sixth studio album by American rock band Van Halen, released on January 9, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records. It was the next to last Van Halen studio album until A Different Kind of Truth (2012) to feature lead singer David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985 following creative differences. This is the final full-length album to feature all four original members (the Van Halen brothers Eddie and Alex, Roth, and Michael Anthony). 1984 and Van Halen's self-titled debut album are the band's best-selling albums, each having sold more than 10 million copies in the United States

Ah. the much better RH output froom the 21st century. ;)
I’m contrary to most of my Radiohead-fan friends in that I’m not as high on this record as they are. The vibe is great but I don’t think most of the tracks are particularly strong as songs.

That being said, it has two of my favorite RH tracks in “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” and “All I Need.”

Much like with Rush a few years earlier with Signals, when 1984 came out, I had that “how dare you?” feeling about their adoption of a keyboard-heavy sound. Only years later did I appreciate these albums, but for me will always be below each band’s earlier/edgier sound.

I liked this better than Van Hagar because DLR > Hagar and the synths complemented instead of dominated.

Straight Up is the fourth studio album by the Welsh rock band Badfinger, released in December 1971 in the United States and February 1972 in Britain. Issued on the Beatles' Apple record label, it includes the hit singles "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue", and the similarly popular "Name of the Game", all of which were written by singer and guitarist Pete Ham. The album marked a departure from the more rock-oriented sound of Badfinger's previous releases, partly as a result of intervention by Apple Records regarding the band's musical direction.
I’m aware of badfinger, but not sure that I could really identify any of their songs. I listened to this album and I liked it, but I felt like it didn’t have a particularly distinctive sound. is that fair, or am I off base? If I had heard one of these songs without knowing who it was, I would have thought it was maybe some Beatles-adjacent project or the kinks or some other British band from the late 60s/early 70s. I guess that maybe part of that has to do with this album purportedly being being a departure for the band? Do their other albums have a more distinctive sound? Again, I did like it, but I guess that was the thing that most struck me. :shrug:
