The Next TOP SONG of 1988 - 1. Heartbreak Beat - Psychedelic Furs   (1 Viewer)

Great countdown, Bracie!  You really had a rough go given how terrific scorchy's was, but you dug deep and found a lot of very cool stuff.  Loved being reminded of Icehouse's "Crazy."  Hadn't though of that song in ages and should have.
Thanks Krista, I had to really work on this one.  And I really love Crazy.

1.  Heartbreak Beat - Psychedelic Furs

The Furs' frontman Richard Butler told Winner magazine in 1986: "It's my interpretation of being in a place. There's a song called 'Heartbreak Beat,' and it's about that feeling when you walk through Washington Square Park and you've got all the boxes going and it sounds like this huge phase-shifter. New York has definitely affected the feel of the songs. I very much pick up on what's around me, steal things, phrases, the feeling of being out at night in New York."
This was the biggest US hit for The Psychedelic Furs, and their only Top 40 entry in the US.

Great 80s band. Love My Way and Heaven were my favorites.
Nice finish. I have all the Furs stuff from debut until the mid 90s. My favorite song is President Gas, but Sister Europe, Dumb Waiters, All that Money Wants, Heartbreak Beat, House and obviously Pretty in Pink all rock.

It still cracks me up that this virginal Molly Ringwald character that John Hughes based the movie title on that song. He didn’t listen to the lyrics. For a start Pretty in Pink means she looks good naked. Second, the lyrics paint the girl as horrible but she sleeps around so people put up with her ####.

Anyway great stuff @Bracie Smathersand @scorchy. It was wonderful to have two different perspectives on the same year. Tempted to do the same with 1978, but it takes a lot of research and you really dont want to miss a song that people love. As my tastes skew UK, not US. Getting criticised for missing out on a Journey/REO Speedwagon/Bob Seger etc song is not my idea of a fun time.

17.  Mary's Prayer - Danny Wilson
One of the deepest dives that you can take on a song.

I didn't even realize Danny Wilson was the name of a Dean Martin movie that they stole.  Lots of detail if you're into diving deeper.

Wow.  I never heard of this YouTube channel before but its loaded with in-depth behind the scenes takes on classic rock tunes.

Binging Ozark on Netflix and chill.  Lol.  I was going to do the next-100 on one of Tim's lists but he got sent away in the middle and I lost steam but I need a break and Ozark is really good man, lol.
No worries - Tim often reappears from the dungeon and you’ll get another chance at some point.

Agree on Ozark - been waiting for this last season for awhile - great show.
