Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 68. Automatic for the People – R.E.M. (207 Viewers)

342 (tie). There’s Nothing Wrong With Love – Built to Spill (77 points)

@Nick Vermeil #9 :headbang:
@Dreaded Marco #56

There's Nothing Wrong with Love is the second studio album released by American indie rock band Built to Spill.
The album has been considered a concept album based around a general theme of growing up. Among the topics: "[Frontman Doug] Martsch sings about everything from the erotic thrill of touching a girl's thumb during an elementary-school game of seven-up to the hip appeal of David Bowie."

Was unfamiliar with this band but enjoying this album. I’m trying to listen to every album or give most a chance - this is one that I could see revisiting in the future.

322 (tie). No Jacket Required – Phil Collins (85 points)

@Idiot Boxer #23
@higgins #34

No Jacket Required is the third solo studio album by English drummer and singer-songwriter Phil Collins.
After finishing touring commitments with Genesis and working with Eric Clapton in 1984, Collins resumed his solo career and started work on a new album. He made a conscious decision to write more uptempo and dance-oriented songs, as much of his previous material was influenced by matters surrounding his first divorce.

Wow. Ok...so I figured this one probably was one of my 20 that didn't make the list. Purely nostalgic as it hit the sweet spot in my formative years.

I'm going to submit "Don't Lose My Number" to the playlist to avoid subjecting you all to the guilty pleasure of "One More Night"

Jagged Little Pill is the third studio album by Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette, released by Maverick on June 13, 1995. Recorded in Hollywood at Westlake with production by Glen Ballard, it is Morissette's first album to be released worldwide. It marks a significant stylistic departure from the dance-pop sound of her first two efforts, Alanis (1991) and Now Is the Time (1992).

I considered this one, but my most recent interaction with it was when it was ruined by turning it into a jukebox musical.

Jeb #6
@timschochet #54

Ramones is the debut studio album by the American punk rock band Ramones, released on April 23, 1976, by Sire Records.

Violence, drug use, relationship issues, humor, and Nazism were prominent in the album's lyrics. The album opens with "Blitzkrieg Bop", which is among the band's most recognized songs. Most of the album's tracks are uptempo, with many songs measuring at well over 160 beats per minute. The songs are also rather short; at two-and-a-half minutes, "I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement" is the album's longest track. Ramones contains a cover of the Chris Montez song "Let's Dance".
My first Ramones album was their 3rd but I soon got their first two. Their sound was such a breath of fresh air compared to the slick rock that filled the airwaves back then.

331 (tie). Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) – Wu Tang Clan (80 points)

@SayChowda #2 :headbang:
@Ilov80s #60

Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is the debut studio album by the American hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan, released on November 9, 1993, by Loud Records and RCA Records. The recording sessions took place during late 1992 to early 1993 at Firehouse Studio in New York City, and the album was produced by the group's de facto leader RZA. Its title originates from the martial arts films Enter the Dragon (1973) and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978).
Another debut album from my list. (I wonder how many of those I have?)Before BIG, Nas, Jay Z there was Wu Tang. This album put the East Coast and NYC back on the rap map. Ghostface, ODB, RZA, GZA, Method Man and more are delivering high energy, grime and chaos. It just really stood in strong contrast to the Dr. Dre smooth west coast sound that was dominant at the time. And it was weird with the movie clips, kung fu references, etc. I get what @KarmaPolice is saying about too many cooks in the kitchen but for me, on this album, it all came together in just the balance to make something totally insane but also totally awesome.

I smoke on the mic like "Smokin' Joe" Frazier
The hell raiser, raisin' hell with the flavor
Terrorize the jam like troops in Pakistan
Swingin' through your town like your neighborhood Spiderman

Listened to the Smartless podcast recently with RZA - what a fascinating dude.

Five Leaves Left is the debut studio album by English folk musician Nick Drake. Recorded between 1968 and 1969, it was released in 1969 by Island Records.
Among his various backing musicians, Drake was accompanied by Richard Thompson from Fairport Convention and Danny Thompson of Pentangle. Robert Kirby, a friend of Drake's from Cambridge University, arranged the stringed instruments for several tracks while Harry Robinson arranged the strings for "River Man". The title of the album is a reference to the old Rizla cigarette papers packet, which used to contain a printed note near the end saying "Only five leaves left".

Produced by the band and recording engineer Richard Mullen, Texas Flood was recorded in the space of three days at Jackson Browne's personal recording studio in Los Angeles. Heard this my sophomore year of high school and I had never heard anything quite like it. Essentially the start of the Nu Metal genre which was a big part of my high school and college days (I’m sure someone will tell me it was actually [obscure band] that they ripped off)

Caught the 30th anniversary tour last fall (Gojira opened and was much better)

Quintessential Nu Metal album IMO but apparently we don’t have too many fans of that genre

Blind is such a great album opener with the cymbals and bass and then “ARRRRRREEEE YOUUUUUUUUU READYYYYYYY”

Ball Tongue is a great track too (I mean the whole album is 🔥 but those 2 stand out)

I say put Daddy on the playlist just so people have to listen to that one, one of the darkest songs I can think of (Davis was molested as a child and his parents didn’t believe him)

No guarantee but there is a decent chance there is a song from a different album that may appear later that you've heard. It's been in commercials, movies and stuff like that. Drake had a short lived career struggling to find an audience for his music. He took his own life at age 26. It wasn't really until the 90s that his music was widely discovered- much in part to a VW commercial and then through illegal file sharing services like Napster and Limewire. He's now pretty widely acknowledged as one of the great singer-songwriters of the 70s and a massive influence on many musicians of the 80s,90s and beyond.

That's all for today. Tomorrow we lead off with a solo album from a singer that will also make two other appearances with his band.

Maybe do one more to change the thread title. Seems wrong to leave this one in the title for a day.

I’m sure I’m missing something but I don’t really understand this one.
If I’m being insensitive, please let me know and I’ll just switch to a different album that finished in a tie when I get home.

Both that album and Texas Flood would have likely found their way into my hypothetical top 70, but no shame when compared to others on the list. I will say then when this came out, it was one of those "game changers" for me and still a go to every couple of months.

@Pip's Invitation #47

John Barleycorn Must Die is the fourth studio album by English rock band Traffic. It marked the band's comeback after a brief disbandment, and peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Top LPs chart, making it their highest-charting album in the US, and has been certified a gold record by the RIAA. In addition, the single "Empty Pages" spent eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 74. The album was marginally less successful in the UK, reaching number 11 on the UK Albums Chart.

Traffic is criminally underrated. A lot of great songs on this album (although I'm not a huge fan of the title track), but I'll have to go with Empty Pages for the playlist.

@Pip's Invitation :hifive:

I had one of their albums in my Top 70 - it was one no one else picked.
I had one as well, so it's probably different one from mine. And I double checked my proper use of "the" and hyphens.

I have one more ranked, but not as high as this one, so maybe you'll see it.

Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies is a compilation album by the American band the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, released on March 18, 1997, by Space Age Bachelor Pad Records. The album is a collection of swing and jazz-influenced songs from the band's first three studio albums, along with four bonus tracks recorded especially for this compilation.

Wow, I just listed this without doing any research - I knew I wanted it, but didn't even remember that it was a compilation from previous albums. In my defense, I don't think the song Zoot Suit Riot hit on the radio until this album came out - for sure that's when I bought it. It wasn't until just now that I see the full title that I remembered that they even did non-swing music. :bag:

Fantastic album from one of my favorite bands.

I just saw them a couple months ago. Sumner's voice, not great to begin with, has not held up well. But it never was about his vocal or the lyrics anyway. The music still sounds fantastic. And his voice fit the songs at the time just fine. Ian Curtis' voice wasn't technically great either, but, damn....

Gonna add Ceremony.

Pavement has 2 perfect albums and I ranked CR/CR a bit higher than that other. On some days I prefer the other one and I hope another person or two ranked it too so we can see it later in the countdown.

Since @rockaction and I ranked this one pretty similarly, I was hoping he would chime in so we could choose a song to add. I'm going with Gold Soundz, but let me know if you have a strong preference for another, RA.

I just listened to this one walking my dog. I only listened to the other one once and it didn't click so just ignored them mostly. Most of my 90s listening was grunge, alt-country and jam bands.

I really liked this one and will definitely return to it. It had some of the "quirks" that threw me off a little on their first one but this was more rocking.

I don't think I've heard of this artist, album or any song thereupon.

Link to the Nick Drake entry of my artist countdown (he's the second artist in that post, below The Lovin' Spoonful). Definitely worth checking out.
