Abe - Are these the kind of people we're going to be officially associating with? The researchers said that, according to the anti-conspiracy holders, their own theory of 9/11 one which says 19 Muslims, none of whom could fly commercial airliners with any proficiency, pulled off an amazing surprise attack under the direction of a man on dialysis (Osama bin Laden) who was living in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan is unwaveringly true.
Oh come on man. You really think they're that smart? Whatever it is though it's working.I keep having this thought that all the conspiracy theorists are secretly coordinating their efforts in a clandestine plot designed to annoy the hell out of the rest of us.
Also, it seems that those who do not believe in the conspiracies were not just hostile but fanatically attached to their own conspiracy theories as well. Some vaccines do.It's clearly the chemtrails that cause the sheeple to believe these wingnut theories like "9/11 was a terrorist attack" and "vaccinations save lives."

"What about building 7?" A social psychological study of online discussion of 9/11 conspiracy theories.Wood MJ1, Douglas KM.

AbstractRecent research into the psychology of conspiracy belief has highlighted the importance of belief systems in the acceptance or rejection of conspiracy theories. We examined a large sample of conspiracist (pro-conspiracy-theory) and conventionalist (anti-conspiracy-theory) comments on news websites in order to investigate the relative importance of promoting alternative explanations vs. rejecting conventional explanations for events. In accordance with our hypotheses, we found that conspiracist commenters were more likely to argue against the opposing interpretation and less likely to argue in favor of their own interpretation, while the opposite was true of conventionalist commenters. However, conspiracist comments were more likely to explicitly put forward an account than conventionalist comments were. In addition, conspiracists were more likely to express mistrust and made more positive and fewer negative references to other conspiracy theories. The data also indicate that conspiracists were largely unwilling to apply the "conspiracy theory" label to their own beliefs and objected when others did so, lending support to the long-held suggestion that conspiracy belief carries a social stigma. Finally, conventionalist arguments tended to have a more hostile tone. These tendencies in persuasive communication can be understood as a reflection of an underlying conspiracist worldview in which the details of individual conspiracy theories are less important than a generalized rejection of official explanations.

Well yeah, someone is trying to vociferously absolve murderers of one of the most heinous crimes in the last 100 years while at the same time pinning it on the victims. Yeah that kind of thing can rile people, very sane people in fact.“The research… showed that people who favored the official account of 9/11 were generally more hostile when trying to persuade their rivals,” said the study.

So we now assume that counting comments to online news articles now counts as a random sampling from which we can project valid assumptions about society as a whole? No possibility that it's the nuts who are most likely to post comments to stories? So, among people who comment on news articles, those who discount official government accounts of events like the 9/11 attacks and the assassination of John F. Kennedy outnumber believers by more than two-to-one. That means the pro-conspiracy commenters are those who are now expressing what is considered conventional wisdom, while the anti-conspiracy commenters represent a small, beleaguered minority that is often scoffed at and shunned.
This is spot-the-####-on. Except for the parts about "critical thinking" and "paying attention to the world around them". Oh, and also the part about "sometimes".conspiracy theorists may have some whacked out ideas sometimes, but all that means is that they are going through life thinking critically and generally paying attention to the world around them.
i agree with the article. conspiracy theorists may have some whacked out ideas sometimes, but all that means is that they are going through life thinking critically and generally paying attention to the world around them. my number one pet peeve is how most people go through life like mindless zombies not thinking about things, making stupid decisions and doing things based on what the tv commercials and hollywood actors tell them to do.
it goes back to why there's a line out the door at subway, when the great family owned deli next door has no one in it. subway is a familiar choice for the mindless mouth-breathing idiots who go through life never really thinking about anything. they recognize jared from subway from the tv so they flock like sheep to whatever is familiar.

Right. Yeah I think this study may need a little peer review. He further noted that, essentially, those who use the term as an insult are doing so as the result of a well-documented, undisputed and historically accurate conspiracy by the CIA to cover up the JFK assassination.

I strongly disagree with the bolded- conspiracy theorists are NOT critical thinkers. What they all seem to have in common, whether from the left or the right, is a refusal to accept how much chance, luck, and just plain screwups and mistakes affect everything that happens. The conspiracy theorist effectively beliefs that there is no chance; that the world's governments are incredibly efficient and plan everything that happens. Far from this being an example of critical thinking, it represents a rejection of critical thought.i agree with the article. conspiracy theorists may have some whacked out ideas sometimes, but all that means is that they are going through life thinking critically and generally paying attention to the world around them. my number one pet peeve is how most people go through life like mindless zombies not thinking about things, making stupid decisions and doing things based on what the tv commercials and hollywood actors tell them to do.
