Contenders vs. Pretenders: Making Sense of the Young QBs (1 Viewer)

Ok, maybe it's just because my season is over after Week 3 (thanks Tyreek, Saquon, DeSean, Tevin, etc., etc.) but I'm trying to look ahead a couple of years and see what kind of value some of these young QBs will ultimately have.

Maybe it's the rule changes in recent years, or maybe it's just my perception, but it seems as though we're seeing more surprises (in a good way) from rookie or second year QBs than we have in the past.

Coming into this year, there were the guys who were heralded to make an immediate difference or take a huge step forward after one year--Murray, Lamar Jackson,  J. Allen, possibly D. Jones.

Then we have a couple of guys who showed up out of nowhere--Minshew and Kyle Allen. And Haskins has yet to be seen.

So, how do people feel about these guys long term? I find it hard to believe they'll all develop into bona fide starters. Or will they all have value for multiple seasons?

Contenders:

Murray

J.Allen

D.Jones

Pretenders:

Lamar (he’s not that good and will be injured and the next RGIII shortly)

Minshew (love this dude, but doesn’t have the physical skills)

K.Allen

I'd mostly agree with this, but for me the biggest wild card is Josh Allen.  He may end up being one of the more interesting fantasy QB vs. real life QB dichotomies. Sometimes he reminds me of an early Favre...in the good and the bad. Powerful arm, tries to improvise, can find ways to win, but also makes some really bone headed plays.

Edit: Didn't include Baker in the list because most people seem to think he's a contender, but maybe that's assuming too much?

Nobody is going to reasonably argue against Baker having the potential to be great at this point. He's certainly not a lock but the potential is real.

Murray seems to, but the size is a small concern.

Lamar and j Allen are very interesting. Give Lamar a legit receiver, he could use a veteran presence, and I think he'll be the best all around. The RG3 comps shouldn't be dismissed but I think he'll develop better, from what I've seen her has a better mental makeup. It might be too early to really say that though.

We haven't seen anything yet but I still like haskins.

Trying to get to the level of pretender is Josh Rosen. Next year, there could be 2 or 3 added to the list of contenders. I think it's better athletes and more experience at the college level.

I worry a bit about Murray because of that. His talent is obvious, but guys of that stature have a tough hill to climb. The most obvious and frequent comparison (in terms of size) is Russell Wilson. But he really walked into a better situation. He had an All-Pro RB to lean on, a couple pro-bowlers on the offensive line, and an incredible defense. Without those benefits, Murray's going to find things much more difficult.

DJ meets that criteria. But the line needs to improve
