Contracting from 12 teams to 8 teams in dynasty (1 Viewer)

So, a league I'm in is having to contract from 12 teams down to 8, and I'm curious is anyone has advice on what to do or what to avoid in the process. Off hand, I'm a bit worried that if we don't add at least a flex spot or two, we're going to end up with loaded teams that never trade and where success in the league has even more to do with random variance of who you picked to start that week than normal.

I'd also love to hear ideas on doing the dispersal draft among the remaining teams.

Any advice (positive or negative) appreciated!

It sounds like the remaining 8 owners need to get together and make some decisions. I would agree that there would be a need to look at possibly expanding starting requirements, roster sizes, etc. You then would have to discuss how to allocate players. I think any ideas would be worth discussing at the meeting and I would try to get the owners to send suggestions to you before the meeting so there can be some sort of organization to the meeting. I would maybe think that you could throw all the players from those teams being contracted into a pool and then allow owners of the rest of the teams to keep "X" number of players with each player costing that first pick they would have to restock from. This would allow the remaining teams to keep a core group of players they have accumulated. In the end in has to be a majority of the league choice though I would think to keep this going.

I assume it has already been determined that your league does not want to find 4 replacement owners?

I'm not the commish, but the commish has been very open to suggestions on how to keep this going. Our biggest issue is that the league is an experiment that, apparently, not everyone knew what they were getting in to. It is a two part league, with an NFL dynasty team, and a "feeder" NCAA dynasty team. Both teams compete in their own leagues and the prize money is divided between both leagues (so, for example, you could do very poorly with your NFL team, but your college team is great so you still get a payout and there is less incentive to tank either league. You get to "promote" guys from your college team to your pro team as they declare for the draft, provided you have room on your roster for them. Would you mind giving an example of what you described for the "expansion" player pool and how declaring players to keep reflects on the dispersal draft? I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how that would work. We'd certainly be open to replacement owners, but we haven't gotten a lot of bites on it. Honestly if anyone is interested in trying this thing out, PM me and I'll give you details on the logistics of the league if needed and get you in touch with the commish.

Find two new owners and have a contraction draft where incumbent owners have a protected list.... or start over from scratch. 8 teams in any format seems weird and I'm sure that if you go through a full season with 8 you'll be looking to expand for 2013.

Never understood the point of 8 team leagues tbh. Have you tried to sell the 4 teams to new owners? I can almost guarantee you will fill it within a month if you post in the looking for leagues forum.

Start over from scratch?
I guess that would be an option, but I think we'd risk losing some guys if we did that.
Find another faltering dynasty league that was contracting and merge the two leagues and start over?It has been my experience playing dynasty that it's hard keep the league together unless all the teams are competitive. Especially if it's a money league. Who wants to keep playing if their team is destined to be 3-11? Who wants to pay money to take over a team that's 3-11? Every few years we had to start over because certain teams were way to powerful and too many teams were terrible (thus prompting owners to drop out).

If you're worried about starting lineups and rosters etc why not just eliminate some players from the league. E.g. No NFC and afc north players

1. Finalize amount of teams (at least go to 10)

2. The two teams (assume get to 10) draft "X" number of players from the four vacant teams.

3. Throw the rest into the normal draft.
