It may be unrelated to other police shooting in SC, but this is the 2nd time an officer was ambushed after a different controversy.

PARADIS, La. Authorities say a 36-year-old Louisiana sheriff's deputy was directing traffic in a school zone when he was shot three times by a man whose motive remains a mystery.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne says Cpl. Burt Hazeltine was directing traffic in the town of Paradis, just west of New Orleans, when he was shot Thursday morning.

A suspect, whose identity hasn't been released, was arrested a short time later.

Champagne says the shooter pulled up to a convenience store, got out of his pickup and opened fire on Hazeltine, who was hit in the face, elbow and eye. Hazeltine is believed to have returned fire, but it was unclear whether the suspect was hit.

Champagne says Hazeltine was in stable but guarded condition. Two nearby schools were briefly placed on lockdown after the shooting.
