Costco Love <3 (2 Viewers)

I don't normally go at opening, but I had a need this past Sunday. Took advantage of the hour and it was glorious.
I think I have gone once at opening in all these years but I think I might have to change up my normal OP for this
Don't get me wrong, there was still a line. I waited for the line to clear. It's fantastic once inside.

Ours opens at 9AM. I just go at 930. ZERO lines. Grab everything I need, leave the cart near the checkers and do any looking around before checking out and Im all finished before they let the littles in.

Definitely worthwhile to trail the early birds, but beat the throngs of plebes. This strategy applies to nearly every line, except ski lifts on powder days.

Going tonight around 7:30pm to grab their 3-pack of ribs. Love that they remove the membrane for you.
Haven’t made these in a while. 3 racks for my wife and me is a bit much.

Maybe one day around Thanksgiving when I’ll have a bunch of extra people.

One suggestion on their meat/seafood is getting the lobster tails and making lobster rolls. Lots of butter and brioche rolls and it was great. We ended up doing 4 tails for 3 people and it was way too much. For the tails, just pop the meat outside of shell after cutting it open with kitchen shears. Put any type of garlic butter plus whatever you like and it’s delicious.

1st time experiencing the early opening today. Kinda felt sorry for all those poor souls just waiting to get in as i was leaving. felt like the retail version of ezpass. Another observation, while I'll always long for the brief days where we had hand scanner capability, the pre-checkout they do now is not a terrible consolation prize. Finally, this was the first time using the newly expanded gas station (10 new pumps for a total of 22). I had to get out of my car to take it all in. I'll always resent not being able to pump my own gas in NJ, but this was a signifcant improvement compared to the gridlock of the old layout. A lot going on in my costco life on this beautiful fall day. Thanks for listening.

My bad for going to Costco at 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday (and with the wife). That is also not the time to let your young child push the cart.

I'm shooting for a few minutes after open on Monday this week. I still expect a crowd, but ours at least tends to do a really good job staffing up the checkout lines.

If there are 2 people checking receipts at the door do you choose right or left early or do you try to force it to stay just 1 line until the very last minute?

I hate the person I become in that line.
Can't they just get rid of these receipt checkers? There has gotta be a better way

Right!? I literally just paid for this. Move the returns desk and the gross food corral to inside store so we can just leave.

It’s worse when you only have an item or two and you have to stand behind people with carts. I have two bags of coffee, let me by Gandolf.

I never understood these guys before self checkout was available. I mean 2 people checking me out could double check after you ring out

I think it just keeps some otherwise unemployable old people employed.

you can just walk out without getting your receipt checked. there have been numerous lawsuits about this. they can't make you present a receipt. they train everyone not to stop you if you decline.

They claim it's actually more likely to benefit you because it'll catch something double-charged

Wont they just cancel those people’s membership?

Without looking up - I’m not so sure about that. I thought the catch was because it’s a membership- we agree to that.

Walmart or other stores that I am not a “member” (giggity-giggity), I walk past like I’m the Queen of England.

I looked it up. None of the lawsuits were won by the plaintiffs and they weren’t even related to the receipt specifically.

Also you’re/we are right:

Membership agreement: Costco is a membership-based warehouse, and checking receipts is a condition of membership. Refusing the check is a breach of the membership agreement, which gives Costco the right to revoke membership, notes

nope. they're trained to just leave you alone if you decline. it's technically false imprisonment to not let you leave a store unless they have probable cause to stop you.

that's just to avoid liability. either way, they can't compel you to show a receipt.

But they have the right to cancel your membership if you don’t.

Aren't you also a lawyer? I disagree with you on this.

Went Saturday around 9:45am and after scanning in at the entrance, I stopped to look at an electric razor they had next to the scanner. As I’m checking out the razor, I hear the Costco employee explaining to the people who were behind me (A mid 60s woman pushing an mid 80s woman in a wheelchair) at the scanner that they had to wait until 10 to come in because they were not executive members. Not wanting the elderly woman waiting in the entrance area (I’m in the northeast and it was a cold morning), I turn and tell the Costco woman that they were with me. There was probably a good minute that they tried to scan in after me, so it was fairly obvious I wasn’t telling the truth. She tells me “sir, please go in and let me do my job.” I shrug and tell the two ladies “sorry, I tried” and head in. Not sure if she let them in.

I get that it’s a slippery slope if you start making exceptions, but I think this was a situation where a little flexibility could have been given.

F that. 9:45 isn't 10:00. I'm trying to be out of there before the masses get in.

Not sure what you disagree with. Courts have been consistent that stores can't force you to show a receipt to exit. Membership places like Costco can make it part of their membership agreement, but they train their employees not to detain anyone that declines.

I suppose I disagree with "they can't make you present a receipt."

It's a membership, and that's a condition, and it's not discriminatory.

I don't think they would detain anyone, but they certainly could revoke the membership.

Idk what else it would be except compulsion to say if you ignore it, we will revoke the membership.

Don’t be that guy trying to straddle and block. Look at the situation and guess. You’ll usually be right because so many people stay left and have no idea or can’t speak English and have no clue what “there are two lines” means. Be like shake and jump in the short line ahead of the don’t pay attentioners.

Costco just opened one closer to me in a cheaper gas state to boot. Yesterday around the same time and I was 2nd in line checking out and it took no time to checkout or leave. The one I used to go to was almost impossible to find spots at the same time. I’ve had to park behind that Costco or in the Lowe’s parking lot next door and a walk to the entrance. Old one had 3 columns of 4 gas pumps (2 on each side). New one has 4 columns of 8 gas pumps (4 on each side). Almost triple the number of gas pumps and probably 3 times the parking. I haven’t quite gotten the layout down perfectly but it’s wonderful.

I agree that he’s not much of a lawyer.
