According to a couple of different sources, mostly via twitter, New York Giants receiver Steve Smith could be headed to Flagstaff to join the Cardinals soon.

Steve Smith, at 5’11 195 pounds would be a great compliment to Larry Fitzgerald and the massively upgraded Cardinals passing attack. Steve Smith at 26 years old is entering his 5th season in the NFL and was wanting a contract extension in New York last offseason.

In 2009, Smith had 107 receptions for 1220 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Arizona made a splash earlier today, signing former Arizona State tight end Todd Heap .

Is Steve Smith (NY) even healthy? Last report I heard he was going to be starting the season on the PUP. Or is that all made up to get out of NY?

Yes, he could land in Zona. I don't think he will, but anything is possible. My money is on a one year deal back with the G-men. I firmly believe he'll start the year on PuP, no matter where that may be.

I looked a little more into the source, the guy does a lot of unfounded speculation. I just got caught up trying to connect the dots with Mike Jurecki's teaser, probably jumped the gun with this post. :bag:

Based on?
He is recovering from microfracture surgery.
I know this. And I've read the speculation that he will be starting on PUP. But, Go Blue "firmly believes" it will happen and I was wondering if it was based on anything other than the current speculation? I mean, it's hard to "firmly believe" something like that when it's all 2nd hand accounts unless he knows or heard something most of us don't. That's why I asked.

Giants GM Jerry Reese conceded Friday that free agent WR Steve Smith (microfracture surgery) is unlikely to be ready for Week 1.Reese hinted that Smith would open the season on PUP, costing him the first six games, if the Giants re-signed him. Smith was a productive slot receiver/flanker two years ago, but he's not drawing interest on the open market because of the knee operation. The Giants should be able to re-sign him on the cheap. Is there a way to delete this thread? Braylon Edwards NOT Steve Smith was the player Jurecki was speculating.

Sorry, just got caught up in the excitement.

Why not just rename the thread?

I can't remember the article, but I read at the beginning of June that the only running Smith was doing was in a swimming pool. That put up a huge red flag for me. While I'm no doctor, but if you can't even run in June how are you going to see the football field in early September? That just didn't seem possible to me. I think the fact we've heard NO teams are interested in Steve Smith is very telling. Talent is there no doubt.

Been following this one closely here in AZ. Looks like Edwards to Cards is going to happen. Jurecki said they are finalizing the contract details and several Cardinals players have posted on Twitter that they think its a done deal.

Despite his DWI, I was really impressed with how Edwards handled himself in New York. Wanted to come back and play for Jets and so did most Jets fans. I wish him all the best in Zona. Kolb will certainly have some big weapons at his disposal.

Kolb should get a big bump here. Braylon had 900/7 with a 54% QB throwing to him last year. He also cut out a bunch of drops, Iif the drops thing is a permanent improvement then 900-100 with 6-8 TDs is very possible.

Bad for Braylon owners who had hoped he would end up the #1 WR somewhere (Chi, Minny) with a big armed QB to replicate his big season.

Good for dyno Fitzgerald owners. Frees him up a bit and Guarantees a 80 catch floor and still 100+ potential.

I think it hurts Fitz a little bit- but not much. Braylon has the potential to be a redzone target, the ideal compliment for fitz owners would have been a between the 20s kind of guy like Devone Bess who would improve their offense because he is a solid receiver but not going to take TD attempts from Fitz.

Cardinals "working on a deal" with Braylon Edwards Jul 31 7/31/2011 4:14:08 PM | More Mike Jurecki of XTRA Phoenix reports that the Arizona Cardinals are "working on a deal" with wide receiver Braylon Edwards.Jurecki says the signing is not a sure thing yet but the Cardinals would be considered one of 2011's biggest free agency winners if they land Edwards to line up across from Larry Fitzgerald. This could be the best wide receiver duo in the NFC.

Guy lined up across from another 100+ reception WR in Boldin so I don't see anyway it hurts Fitz. In fact it helps because now maybe he won't be triple teamed al the time. Arizona is putting themselves in position to win their division every year for the next 5 years, gotta love it as a Cards fan after such a horible off season in 2010.

Kolb going to be ranked in the top 10 - 12 if this happens
Yo Kelly,This is a great idea for a thread or one of the Kolb bumps. It's hard to not want to think top10-12 but there are some things wring against this happening in 2011...1-Most of the parts are just getting there and they will have to come together or learn more about each other as the season unfolds. That could be rough.2-Love Kolb, but he only has 7 starts under his belt and we need to see a fuill season before we project top10-12 IMO. A guy like Freeman IMO has a better chance of cracking the top10 becaue he has been in that system for 2-3 years and will understand everyone there a lot better. You have about 7-8 QBs like Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Vick, Brees, and several more that are just safer picks than trying to push Kolb as a QB1 for FF owers in 2011. Good stuff

I think Arizona is a great landing place for Braylon from a fantasy perspective. It is surely an upgrade from where he was. He goes from the Jets run first offense to an offense that has produced multiple 1,000 yard WR's in the same season (Fitz, Boldin, Breaston....). If Kolb is as good as some people are saying its also a great upgrade at QB and gives Braylon his best QB that he has had since he's been in the NFL. Great move for Braylon.....

Ceiling-80 catches, 1,300 yards, 11 TDs

Floor-65 catches, 1,000 yards, and 7 TDs

I think he's going to be a lot closer to his ceiling in AZ!

My inside says the Edwards signing is real close. Also he's very excited what they are doing with the offense. Heap could have a huge year this year.

Kent Somers tweeted two hours ago that the Cards are still talking to B Edwards - it will be a short term deal if it gets done.
