How much of LT's issues were "known" at the time they were taking place?
Well he was arguably the best player in the game at the time would that matter?
Alot but not all, certainly enough. IIRC He bragged about getting away with things, for example I think he was the first with the visine bottle of clean pee while taking a pee test.

Taylor in his day, and Vick today are both Top 10 most recognizable players in the NFL. If you want to get an idea of how LT would have been treated, pay attention to what happens to Vick. If he gets away with a hand slap, then you can infer that Goodell is willing to go easy on the high-profile players. My guess is that he will make a point of treating players in trouble evenly.

Was Taylor ever in trouble with the law? He was a chronic drug abuser, but I don't believe he was arrested [eventually three times] until after he retired.
In terms of his drug use, there are plenty of conspiracies about whether the Giants and the league covered up his problems. I would say that, based on recent history, the league is more stringent in its follow ups for substance abuse. But, to LT's credit, he failed two drug tests and went five years without another failed test.

I think it's premature to draw any conclusions. Mike Vick may have been tried in the court of public opinion, but he hasn't been arrested or charged with anything related to the dog-fighting yet. My sense is Goodell is waiting to get all the facts. As Chris Mortensen pointed out recently, Goodell has suspended guys with chronic legal troubles. Vick, even if he's arrested, may not be subject to suspension. That wouldn't be giving Vick "star treatment" because he's yet to be considered in chronic violation of NFL policy.
