Not many people could have predicted that starting quarterback J.P. Losman would not be participating in the first practice of training camp due to injury. But backup quarterbacks know they always have to be at the ready during the season.Craig Nall got his first opportunity Thursday to show he could step in if the unfortunate happens."It is a little different," said Nall of assuming the starters role in training camp. "But I might be in situations like that during the season where something happens to J.P. and I am called on last minute to perform."Nall faced a comparable situation last year when he injured his hamstring the first week of camp which essentially put him out of the three way competition for the starting quarterback job. Even though Losman entered camp as the starter the two were still able to joke about the similar situation."I joked with him for having to double up (on reps) last year and now he is out early," said Nall. "I can sympathize with him."Although the two have joked about the irony of the situation Losman is expected back much sooner than Nall returned last year. In addition, there is no question of who the starter is this year."Mine being two and a half weeks and he being our starter he knows when he comes back he is going to have a job," said Nall. "Whereas last year with me I was fighting for that starting job and had a significant injury that kept me out for an extended period of time."With all signs pointing to Losman making a quick recovery from what sounds like a minor weight lifting injury, Nall and rookie Trent Edwards will benefit from increased reps. While NFL Europa quarterback Kevin Eakin is still harnessing the offense, Edwards and Nall will be splitting snaps while Losman recovers.Losman did note that if this were a game week he would be out on the field participating. Nall echoes that Losman should return sooner than later to the practice field. The veteran backup acknowledged that he was a little rusty in his first practice, but was confident in his decision making in his first action since the last day of the spring mini-camp."It wasn't a great practice but at the same time we are knocking the rust off but everybody is getting back into things," Nall said. While he does not have the pressure of competing for the starting job Nall knows the injury to Losman will not change the way he approaches each practice."Him being hurt has no effect on how I come out and practice," Nall said. "I know I'm competing for a job regardless if we have 10 quarterbacks out here playing."So although the injury to Losman will obviously not create a quarterback controversy; Buffalo's projected backup got a full taste of what it would be like to step in at a moment's notice.Reply With Quote
