We have some odd neighbors living below us and just ran into the husband at the mailbox. He was digging in the trash can near the boxes and taking all the junk mail out and recyclables.
Now, we live in a fairly nice complex and it isn't cheap. My understanding is that he and his wife are both nurses or something along those lines. They have a license plate frame on their minivan that alludes to them or one of them being a nurse. And I see them in scrubs fairly often.
Anyway, I personally am not fishing through a trash can for cans and bottles. Even still, I can kind of look the other way and just sort of explain it away as being frugal.
However, he is always piling up junk mail, newspapers and cereal box and other cardboard/paper packaging products. About 6 months ago, there was this weird/loud sound reverberating through the walls. Our bed is against the wall and it was like damn, what the hell is causing that noise. There would be this low buzzing for extended periods with brief stopping and then repeat, over and over. This is all going on at like 1AM.
Turns out that this was a shredder and they were shredding paper for a couple of hours each night. In their little patio area, they had bags of shredded paper. It didn't appear to be shredded newspaper or cereal boxes, just actual shredded paper.
They also collect all the non recyclable plastics like milk jugs, cartons, etc.
Is there some kind of market for scrap/shredded paper that I am not aware of? I know that cardboard can be recycled, but they aren't storing cardboard boxes or anything approaching the volume to produce any sizeable monetary return on the time investment.
The only thing I could think of is maybe they provide the shredded paper to an animal rescue organization. But, if they are that committed to animals, it seems odd that they would live in an a place that doesn't allow pets of any kind.
