Curry ILB or OLB in a 3-4 (1 Viewer)

If Curry does go to KC as EVERYONE projects, where will be play?

Will he be like Mayo last year and play both inside and out?

Will he be a 3 down LB to start or will he play like Lofton did with ATL?

With Vrabel, D Johnson and Williams as the other starters I can't help but wonder if KC would line him up as a pass rushing OLB even though that is not his strong suit. I believe they want DJ on the inside so where does this leave Curry?

Any thoughts or insight is appreciated

Tom

In the middle right next to DJ. Vrable/Demorrio will be the OLB's, IMO.

I fear that Curry's "off the charts" ability will land him as an OLB in KC. With the Chiefs playing against Gates, Z Miller and Scheffler 40% of the time in '09, I see Curry having a tough time being top tier for FF purposes.

Depends on where he goes... but let's say to be safe he ends up in KC, I think he'll be playing MIC. They tried Derrick Johnson in the middle for the later half of the season and he really didn't produce the numbers they were hoping for. He actually had better games statistically on the strong side, I would know, I had him and felt the decline. I think if and when the Chiefs draft Curry... it's going to be vrabel/curry/DJ

Hasn't it been reported that DJ will be on the inside and that they will be running a 3-4 as their primary base defense?

I do not believe any defensive position has been confirmed for the Chiefs. As of today, we're still not sure if they're running a bona-fide 3-4 or a 3-4/4-3 hybrid. Most believe the latter will be the alignment as a mirror of the Cards D from last year.If I were to guess, DJ will stay on the inside while Hali will ultimately be viewed as a pass-rushing OLB (even though I believe they're going to try him at DE initially). With Hali having a difficult time against the run in the Chiefs former 4-3 D, I cannot fathom him being effective as a DE in a 3-4.I do not believe D Williams will start. With only a $1mm salary for '09, he'll probably stay as depth. IMO, at 6' 230lbs he just is not big enough to consistently play LB in a 3-4. McBride could also become an OLB, but I think he'll be given first crack at DE if he can add 10-15lbs.The key to this entire arrangement will be Curry.

I'm not entirely sure that they would be able to fully just jump to a 3-4, maybe after this years draft. If they don't get another DT, Dorsey won't have much of an impact at the nose, they would be better off moving him to DE and finding a bigger nose tackle in this years draft. With their current roster they would have to run a hybrid at best, if they want to be successful. On the flip side... I can see Demorrio/Vrabel/DJ/Curry... that's saying of course they draft a bigger DT and move Dorsey.

With Zach Thomas just signing a deal with the Chiefs, I would think Curry's chance of being an ILB is (temporarily) derailed.

OLB: Hali / Curry?

ILB: D Johnson

ILB: Z Thomas

OLB: Vrabel

I believe that while Curry may have a big NFL impact, his FF impact just took a hit if he lands in KC.I don't see how he can be a 3 down LB with this group.

Zach was only a 2-down LB for the 'Boys and he would not threaten Curry's 3-down potential. However, Zach's signing could force the Chiefs to use Curry as an OLB opposite Vrabel. One thing is for certain...Johnson will never be leaving the field. The same most likely holds true for Vrabel. Hali will also be rushing from the outside on passing downs.

Hali started camp at OLB. It's not know if this is a permanent move or a "quick fix" for Vrabel's absence. Either way, the above-listed lineup is starting to be chiseled in stone.Do the Chiefs now go LT? Does Curry get drafted and push Zach Thomas to a secondary role? Two things are constant...DJ and Vrabel will be starting. Everything else is an assumption.
