7. Jacksonville vs. Tennessee

8. Minnesota vs. Atlanta

OAK vs the Lions. OAK has a stout pass defense, and an adequate run D. DET showed very little rushing in 2006 (finished dead last), and didn't do much better in preseason (30th). DET is gonna have to win by passing, and OAK won't let that happen at home.

that was last year . . . the OL is better and the Lions have more options in the backfield . . . as for the passing - Oak does have a good secondary, but they arent going to be able to cover the big four all day . . .that being said, I DO like the Raiders defense overall this year, just NOT in Week 1 . . .good luck . . .

I would have to think DET vs. Oakland would be a strong contender.
detroit's D has been horrible this preseason . . . the only way your post has any merit is if Rogers is good and healthy next week . . .
I think it has less to do with DET's defense and more to do with an Oakland offense coming off a historically bad year, and a QB that was most recently seen being rushed back from a nasty knee injury, and was always a turnover machine (Daunte's Achilles heel, the QB snap, reared its' ugly head in the preseason again). Now, the Raiders offense appears to have drastically improved, and I am quietly optimistic, but I'd love to see the DST scoring of each team that played against Oakland last year. I'm guessing, collectively, it would rank in the top 3.

I hope I am wrong, rendering my post merit-less, but until the Raiders do it in the regular season, and Culpepper has a few good games, starting the D going against them is a good move.

I'm actually contemplating the insane move of benching the Bears vs. SD in favor of the Raiders vs Detroit.

This thread asked for who you like, not who you don't like. So far you have only mentioned 2 D's you don't like. Perhaps you can post one that you do.BTW - if the DET OL is better and there are more options in the backfield, why hasn't it turned into anything decent in preseason? I think KJ is a ton better than Tatum when both are healthy, so I don't see how the Tatum/Duckett combo can be a bonus for DET. Here are the top rushers in DET's 4 preseason games:Week 1 - Tatum Bell - 6 carries/19 yards/0 TD's vs CINWeek 2 - Tatum Bell - 6 carries/33 yards/0 TD's vs CLEWeek 3 - TJ Duckett - 5 carries/16 yards/0 TD's vs INDWeek 4 - TJ Duckett - 9 carries/29 yards/0 TD's vs BUFDET scored a grand total of 1 rushing TD in preseason (in 84 carries). And take a look at those D's they faced. All of them suck vs the run. DET finished the preseason 30th in yards rushing (265) and 28th in yards per carry (3.15).

I'm in the same boat. Sad thing is, I might pull the trigger and do exactly that. I'm guessing that Kitna will throw 40-50 times that game which should result in some sacks and picks...

I have ATL vs MIN and Cin vs BAL...

Hard to choose between MIN and BAL. I didn't draft BAL early to put them on the pine, but MIN has a great matchup IMHO.

What do you think?

Bell > KJ, and I'm not really a Bell fan . . . Duckett is an okay GL runner, which speaks to KJ's short yardage capability . . . beyond that, you are not thinking straight if you are starting a (non-elite) D against a potential O powerhouse like DET . . . ----------for the record, I like MIN against ATL . . .

HOU vs KC.
I was thinking the same thing but with the Packers and Bears as my other options i was afraid to speak aloud LOL
In the league where I have the Packers I'm not sure if I want to take a chance they get lit up by Philly or pick up HOU D against a KC O that has a lot of issues at QB and WR. Sure there is the LJ factor but I think HOU is a nice sleeper for week 1.

I'm in the same boat. I think the Pack is going to get lit up by the Iggles, and I'm looking for a stopgap.

No comments on Seattle at home vs. Tampa?

The Pack has a ball hawking, aggresive "D" that loves to get after the QB. Sacks, turnovers ... and they have developed a penchant for taking those turnovers to the house.I'm not that scared of this Philly offense in week one ... and, yes, the Pack is my starting defense. Will they get "lit up"? Perhaps ... but, I think the smarter money is on that defense wreaking some havoc on Sunday. I start 'em with confidence. I drafted them in round 16, and I'm not about to blow a waiver wire move because it's the Eagles.

Great thread.

Week 1 thru 4 you would do well with the Minnesota Vikings Defense including week1 against the Atlanta Falcons...

I'm sitting the Bears as well and going with Washington at home...we can get up to -14 points if the Bolts score like I think they will...feel safer going with the skins to get me a few points versus the negative with the Bears...and who knows maybe the Skins get me a lucky TD.

Lower end D/ST I like for week one:

Oak vs Det-- Based on Lions passing 50 times

Houston vs KC --Playing the Jacoby Jones punt return factor here

AZ vs SF --Lets see if Gore's hand is fully healed (fumbles?) and if A. Smith has really improved.

Wash vs Fins, I wonder how well Trent Green play's, and is the Fins o-line as bad as everyone thinks

Starting a mediocre team on the road (Detroit, KC, Mia) is a good way to score a zero for the week. Just because Oak/Hou/Was were terrible last year, doesn't mean they're terrible this year.

I'm also starting Washington at home.

Not trying to jack this trend. MOP, can we expect more threads from you this year? They have always been great reads, great insight.

I will be doing my weekly RB thread. I like to concentrate on that...I might do a 2nd that will expand to QBs and WRs. Thanks for the compliment. Look to see you post in the RB threads. We have one of these up already although it is dated a few weeks.

I've got Chicago and Washington as well. I'd hate to sit CHI and have to suffer through watching highlights of Hester going nintendo on San Diego. On the other hand, the Skins are the safer pick. Might have to flip a coin on this one.

Oakland's "stout" pass defense is very misleading.Teams ran all day long against Oakland last year, racking up a league-high 542 carries at 4.0 ypc and 134 ypg. Most teams had the lead against the Raiders late in games, allowing them to run the clock out. When run defense is one of the worst in the league, pass defense immediately looks amazing.A similar phenomenon happened with the Colts. They also had a terrible run-defense, giving up a league-worst 5.3 ypc and a whopping 173 yards per game on the ground. As such, teams ran the ball early, but then were forced to pass later in games as the Colts almost always had the lead. Consequently, their pass defense flourished.

Probably not many people have them as part of a committee, but if you have the Eagles D, you almost certainly want to be starting them this week, because whoever ends up as RB for the packers, you can be certain Philadelphia will be testing his ability to pick up the blitz early and often.

tommyk doesn't know what he's talking about here.Oakland gave up the third fewest yards in the entire NFL last year, despite a tenth-grade offense that couldn't stay on the field for more than three plays at a time. Considering how bad the offense was, just being above-average on defensive stats would be great. Being #3 is incredible.

Yes, they gave up a ton of rushing yards, but that's because the Oakland offense was so bad that a 7 point lead was safe enough for their opponents that they could simply grind out the clock on the ground.

FYI, FootballOutsiders ranked the passing D fifth in the NFL, and the rush D as 16th.

I am going to do the same thing. I just do not see alot of mistakes made by the Chargers. Kitna has to be good for 1-2 picks.

again, I think that the Vikings are rostered in most competitive leagues... I was hoping to focus on WW defenses...
not neccessarily I picked them up a couple of weeks ago and i think they might be availible in another league that i'm in. 12 teamers Might be able to get lucky.

I kind of like Denver in week 1.

The Buffalo running game has looked terrible in the preseason and with Champ & Bly in the defensive backfield the Bills may have some trouble passing the ball.
