Cowboys dodged draft night bullet after Chiefs spilled the beans

By Mauricio Rodriguez

A to Z Sports
The Dallas Cowboys selected DT Mazi Smith in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft but they were close to losing out on him.
There's a brand new defender in the building and you're unlikely to miss him as the 325-pound defensive tackle Mazi Smith is officially a member of the Dallas Cowboys .
The prospect out of Michigan has Dan Quinn smiling like crazy in just about every clip you find of the defensive coordinator on social media and it's easy to understand why.
The Cowboys defense has its new nose tackle. Smith's presence on the defensive line will go a long way in improving the team's run defense as the freakish athlete is a force to be reckoned with. But the team is also excited about what the rookie can do as a pass rusher as he can even free up opportunities for Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence on the edges.
There's also one more reason why Quinn, Will McClay, and Mike McCarthy still seem ecstatic about the pick: They almost missed out on him. To be more specific, they almost traded away the selection only to see their guy, Mazi, drafted by another NFL team.
That's right. According to Patrik Walker, who covers the Cowboys for the team's official website, the team fielded a call from the Kansas City Chiefs as they mulled the possibility of trading back a few spots.
It could've happened, too. But it was then that the Chiefs inadvertently trumped the deal by letting out a piece of critical information: They wanted the 26th pick to draft Mazi Smith, too.
Oh, the NFL Draft. It's chaotic even when we don't find out about it until later.
This particular Draft Day nugget proves two things: The Cowboys were right to stay put at 26th and they weren't the only NFL team high on him. All that matters now though, as Jerry Jones hilariously pointed out in the team's press conference Thursday night is that they got him.
Smith will wear #58 for the Cowboys and he's the first defensive tackle selected in the first round by the franchise since 1991 when the team took Russell Maryland.

Hating life right now.
Terrible pick with what was on the board.
Why does the 2nd rd have to be like this lol

That’s the worst part; using a second on yet another project.

Never heard of the kid, but was very impressed with the tape I saw.

Heard on the radio today that he's going to switch to #42 out of respect for Emmitt.

Im not sure he ever had the option. I get that we don’t retire numbers and even hand out 88 and 94 but imo, 22 should be retired.

We never should have let him out of Dallas and we would have been a much better team with him over Troy freaking Hambrick.

Spent some time watching break downs of Mazi Smith to supplement some of my original takes.

Highly recommend a YouTube vid - called Mazi Smith More than a Run Stopper. It’s done by an Eagles fan, who was surprisingly articulate.

I still REALLY like the pick.

Need to spend some time on the TE and LB now.

I like him a lot. He was on my Eagles radar for sure, but, I felt him lining up next to Jordan Davis would have been a bit redundant b/c I just kept looking at the 1/2 sack career total in 30 games in college, while playing in the Big Ten. I think he *can* develop into a pass rusher a bit, but felt it would take him some time to get technique down etc. I couldn't hate too much on the Cowboys drafting him, although I'm not sure he was that high on their board (felt they were spurned by the Bills taking Kincaid in front of them) and felt the pick was more a "need now" move vs BPA. With that said, he's definitely going to help improve the run game and clog up the middle to free up Micah more.

WIth that said, how do you guys feel about Micah moving to DE full time?

Love the Mazi pick and where we got him.

Some of my early takes after watching some film….

I’m still sour on the TE. He can block and might be a better receiver than he showed in college due to scheme.

The LB, Overshown looks pretty raw to me. Converted safety that is a willing tackler. Might be a hybrid LB/DB(slot). Similar to who I think is our best tackler,

Viliami Fehoko - Plays with a high motor and reckless abandon, sometimes to the detriment of himself. If we can get him to play under control he could be nasty.

5th round pick Asim Richards might be a gem, especially at guard. BIIIIIIIG fan of drafting LTs exclusively and moving them all over the line. (Yes, I know tackles make more than guards so players won’t like it but tough)

I like the UDFA FB we got too.

The WR from SC shows the ability to make tougher catches in traffic. 6-2 and rangy.
If the TE works out I can see this being one of our better drafts as a whole and that’s really saying something. I think we took less risks and got solid players.

The more I watch more I like this draft. God bless Will Mcclay.

I don’t want Mazi to be a pass rusher. I want him to take on two blockers and mush the middle. ( We do have to stop your 1950s offense after all).

We didn’t want Kincaid. We liked Sam Laporte out of Iowa. We were NEVER drafting Kincaid. The Chiefs tried to trade with us to take Mazi.

Micah- I haven’t heard anything about that from the coaches. Ive just heard he wants to bulk up.

I love that the Cowboys are drafting to stop the Eagles and their 2nd highest scoring offense. I don't care what decade its from.

Awesome contribution!
You guys sure a fickle bunch

If you had left out the 1950s crap I wouldn't have replied at all.

The hens are clucking again.

Unlike your thread, we won’t hit the report button here. Because we’re not snitches or hyper insecure about our sports team.

We welcome all Cowboys fans!

TE pick.

Ok - I needed to spend some time thinking about the pick, the board, why I didn’t like it, how will he be used, our new Offensive philosophy. Lots to unpack.

Cowboys want to run the ball. They want to run more Power. Power sets have lot’s of TE/FB’s sealing blocks - with athletic OG’s (more on this later) out front blocking. Getting bigs on Littles. Our OC has talked about this extensively in his past.

His tape shows exactly what he is. A fantastic blocker with good size, ok hands and route running along with limited YAC ability. He’s here to help our OT’s and OG’s get to the second level without using combo blocks. This is exactly what he did in Michigan. He also was used as a FB.

The Cowboys in my opinion, didn’t take the Florida guard because he doesn’t fit this mold. He’s an ugly, old school road grader (north/south kinda guy). This is not want they want.

We play a **** ton of 2 TE sets. This pick was an upgrade on Hendershot.

I also forgot we signed Edoga.

I’m still not sure if I love the pick and value, but after a long day of researching this - I at least understand the pick.

Everything I read suggests that they REALLY liked the Iowa TE who was only a good receiver and not a good blocker so while I agree with your point, I’m not sure they had the same thoughts.

Additionally, Maaaaaan, I wish we only drafted road grading, mauling guards. He sounds amazing!

Does anyone know how many two TE sets McCarthy calls historically? Having 3 servicable TE's is good insurance in case of injury. I've been thinking about the 2nd round pick, and have become much more comfortable with the pick.

Looks like he used them less than Moore....

At least on 1st down...
Brian Schottenheiner the new OC is also big on 12 personnel.

Whatever the exact %:
It’s going to be a lot.
It will be among league leaders.

While appreciate hearing this, I would appreciate it more if they kept it to themselves.
It’s not really a secret

I know. It’s just kind of a pet peeve of mine. I’m not suggesting every coach needs to be like Bill Belichick but for example, Dan Quinn, love the guy, but the dude talks way too much. He talks to the media about how he switches guys around trying to confuse the offenses. He will sometimes go into great detail about scheme.

We have Tristan on the roster. Anybody else on Earth who is not on the team right now, is under consideration,” Fassel said, via the team’s website

I loved Jerrah's Deer in the headlights look when Buffalo jumped him for Kincaid, precious. Then he panicked and drafted Mazi Smith way too high. It was a beautiful thing. 😁
