Damian Williams... TEN WR1? (1 Viewer)

i drafted him purely on talent, but this is a pleasant surprise. could be a very nice spot for williams

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100423.../100423080/1027

also heres a video of fisher, reinfeldt and heimerdinger talking up damian. seems like they are very excited about him

I traded Jermichael Finley for the 1.05 in a dynasty league and then traded down to get Williams at 1.11? and Hernandez at TE. With Gates as my first TE, I felt like I got two good future guys for one. Williams was my No.2 WR this year.

.5 ppr 12 team dynasty damian fell to me at 2.7?!?!?! snatched him up immidiately

Wouldn't doubt it at all. I've raved about Williams a few times. I think people get caught up in his 40 time and are overlooking his incredible hands, routes, and RAC ability.

I think he and Britt are a very nice twosome for the Titans. That being said, it remains to be seen is how much passing yardage their run-oriented offense will generate.

Does he really have a shot at being better than Britt right out of the gate?
No. But the Titans offense has been dying for WR help for years. Adding Williams to Britt COULD give the Titans their best WR pair in a decade a couple years from now.

Other than Steve Smith, most of the high profile WRs from SC have not done too well in the NFL.

The Titans don't throw the ball enough to make it worth while for both Britt and Williams to succeed. I was impressed with Britt as a rookie on a team that doesn't throw a lot.

I would be interested to know what people see as a projection for him for his 1st 3 years in the league...

really depends on if they ever bring in a sufficient Qb

What does where he played have anything to do with his potential?I'm sure most QBs from Delaware didn't do well until Flacco came into the league

I'm sure most QBs from Miami of Ohio didn't do well until Ben came into the league

etc.

etc.

etc.

That said, while I like his talent, I agree it's going to be hard for him to do well along with Britt with VY at the helm. It just doesn't appear like a situation that can support lofty passing numbers. Then again, similar things have been said about other teams that were later able to put up decent fantasy numbers.

things change quick in fantasy. gotta be ahead of the curve

Williams is a complimentary WR, at best. The only potential #1 on the Titans roster right now is Britt.

You can't act like where he played college is completely irrelevant. Mostly irrelevant, sure, but not completely. If a college has big name WRs that continually put up big numbers in college but not in the pros then its feasible that the system they played in and the staff they played under increases their stats. Of course, its possible that a receiver can be "NFL quality" and be in that system, of course. I'm not saying I agree, but if a trend exists then its possible there's a reason for it.

The difference b/w USC receivers and Delaware or Miami Ohio Quarterbacks... there isn't a trend. Its not like there were a bunch of first-day bust QBs strolling out of the Blue Hens locker room before Flacco showed up.

I think it means a lot sometimes. OL from Michigan for example tend to do well in the NFL. RBs from the Univ of Miami over the last 10-15 years...a lot of Miami players as the other night we were up to like 50 active NFL players. I think a school can make a big difference, sorry you don't.

this could be just coach speak to motivate britt... theres been other rumblings to do the same this offseason iirc. i don't see him walking in and being #1 immediately regardless.

What kind of stats does a number 1 in Tennessee get with C Johnson running, and VY running?Last year #1 WR was Chris Johnson (oh he is a RB)

Nate Washington 47 catches 569 6 tds

Britt 42 catches 701 yards and 3 tds

2008:

Bo Scaife 58 rec 561 yards 2 tds

#2 Chris Johnson (rb) 43 catches 260 yards 1 td

2007 (VY qb Lenwhale rb/Chris Brown rb)

Justin gage 55 rec 750 yards 2 tds

roydell williams 55 catches 719 yards 4 tds

I think with Chris Johnson breaking long TDs running and catching a #1 in Tenn has another teams #2 numbers. And when VY gets the majority of snaps he tends to run he ran 55 times last year (almost as much as len whale) and 93 when he started in 2007 when he started.

Add Cook and CJ could be one of the best receiving RBs in the league and they have a potentially nice group. Not to bash on VY, he's still a winner when he plays but it's incredibly unlikely that all of their receivers put up good stats. I like Williams enough but mid-late 2nd seems about right.

I agree, but not with Vince Young at QB on a team that loves to run the ball. Since Fisher became the coach there have only been five 1000 yard receiving seasons - 4 of them by Derrick Mason. I thought that Britt was going to become that guy, but with the addition of Williams I think they both end up mediocre fantasy-wise.

have we suddenly forgotten that Titans WRs are almost universally worthless? Now, Mason was a great player, but the WR2 in tennessee NEVER has value.

I am intrigued by the Williams pick, too, and i think it was a good move for the titans. If Cook develops into something, a Corps of VYoung-CJ-Cook-Britt-Williams looks like a winning combo with their o-line, defense, and coaching.

but there's just not enough to go around. Britt is going to be the WR1, he has the body for it. Williams seems like a great complimentary player, but just that. now if he were drafted by, lets say, the patriots, he could be looking at a 1000 yard season. as it is on this team, he's always going to be at best the third option, probably 4th behind Cook/Scaife.

this is one of those picks that will have more impact in real life than fantasy.

my first thought was coach speak. maybe Kenny's not been showin up to lift.what other rumblings are you referring to? unhappiness with Britt?

I will let someone else take him early.

Isn't there an annual "this is a WR to keep any eye on" routine with this team?

Gage, Washington, Paul Williams, Hawkins, Britt. And I am missing about 4 other names. Britt looked good last year, and I missed out on him, and that's too bad. But I am fine with letting everyone else figure out who catches most of Vince's 18 TD passes.

I'm not buying Damian Williams to do much of anything this year unless we see Nate Washington and/or Justin Gage waived. Now it's entirely possible that could happen, and soon, if Jeff Fisher is as optimistic about Damian as the GM appears to be.

I agree with you about this year. However, the video news conference from the link showed a pretty optimistic Jeff Fisher. He said that if Williams didn't have special teams skill, he would have still been a second-round pick in their eyes and he would have definitely been drafted as just a receiver. Fisher said they tried to trade up for him in round two but they were unsuccessful. I think Williams has a similar kind of year one as the Giants Steve Smith, nothing to write home about. But we'll see how mini camp goes.

I tend to agree with this. I want to like this guy because of the hype and production, but he's just not my cup of tea.
