Broncos's RB Damien Nash Collapses, Dies

(CBS4) ST. LOUIS CBS4's Gary Miller is reporting that Broncos' running back Damien Nash has died after collapsing at a charity basketball game in St. Louis.

Nash was a second-year running back who joined the Broncos as a free agent on Aug. 3, 2006. He played in three games with the Titans as a rookie.

According to the web site STLtoday.com, the celebrity basketball game featured nine NFL players and took place at Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis.

The proceeds of the event were to benefit the Darris Nash Find A Heart Foundation, which raises money for heart transplant research. Darris Nash, 25, is the older brother of Damien Nash, who was a standout running back at Riverview and East St. Louis.

Damien Nash played at Missouri. The foundation was created last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

The info was posted on a premium Missouri Tiger messageboard, but it was confirmed by the SID at Mizzou.

This is the only info I've found, apparently it happened at the game for his brother...

"A celebrity basketball game featuring nine NFL players, including former Missouri Tigers Brad Smith, Damien Nash and Justin Gage, will be played next Saturday at 3 p.m. at Riverview Gardens High School.

The proceeds of the event will benefit the Darris Nash Find A Heart Foundation, which raises money for heart transplant research. Darris Nash, 25, is the older brother of Damien Nash, a standout running back at Riverview and East St. Louis who played at Missouri and is now with the Denver Broncos. The foundation was created last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

Smith, Missouri's record-setting quarterback, is now a wide receiver with the New York Jets. Gage, who also played basketball at Missouri, is a wide receiver with the Chicago Bears. Admission is $3 with a canned food item and $5 without. The canned food items will be donated to Gateway Homeless Services."

:towelwave:

I drafted him in my dynasty rookie draft in 2005.

Wonder what the problem is with his brothers heart.

There have been a lot of apparently healthy young people just drop dead because of an unknown heart problem.

What a shame. If it was a heart ailment, then his brother will probably feel awful considering the circumstances. Sad days.

That's horrible news.

What a very sad day this has been in football.

Condolences to his family and to what must be an absolutely distraught Broncos organisation at the moment.

athletes in pique physical condition, it almost has to be heart related... devastating, thoughts and prayers out to his loved ones.

Absolutely heart-wrenching. I thought the guy was the real deal in Mizzou and, despite his not-so-great falling out, it was great to see him do well in Denver and hopefully start a decent NFL career. Instead, he is gone.

RIP Damien.

Here is the story running in the St. Louis Post Dispatch today. Goes into a few more details.

Ex-Mizzou star Damien Nash dies

By Alan Fredman and Graham Watson

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

02/25/2007

Denver Broncos running back Damien Nash, a former player at Missouri and two area high schools, died Saturday night at Christian Hospital, a spokesman said.

The cause of death was unknown. The spokesman said he died at 6:40 p.m.

Earlier in the afternoon, Nash competed in a charity basketball game at Riverview Gardens High. He went home and collapsed afterward, sources said.

The game was held to benefit The Darris Nash Find A Heart Foundation, which raises money for heart transplant research. Darris Nash, 25, is the older brother of Damien Nash. The foundation was created last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

Former Missouri receiver Sean Coffey was at the event with Nash.

"Everything was normal. ...We were playing around at the game. ... He was fine,'' Coffey said.

"I give my best to his family. This is crazy. I can't believe this is happening. It was the first time I had seen him in a couple of years. I can't believe he's gone. I'm so happy I got to see him one last time.''

Nash, 24, played sparingly for the Broncos last season after signing as a free agent in August. He had 24 carries for 98 yards. He played for the Tennessee Titans in 2005, carrying six times for 32 yards. He was drafted by the Titans after he left the Missouri football team in the middle of the 2004 season.

"Coach Gary Pinkel is obviously shocked and saddened like we all are,'' said Chad Moller, director of media relations at Missouri.

At Missouri, Nash had 253 rushing attempts for 1,254 yards (5.0 yards per carry) with 12 rushing touchdowns. He also had 36 receptions for 282 yards with two receiving touchdowns.

Before going to Missouri, Nash, 5-feet 10, 220 pounds, played high school football for three seasons at Riverview Gardens. In his senior year, Nash followed his coach at Riverview, Darren Sunkett, to East St. Louis High, from which he graduated. He played two seasons at Missouri after starting at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

In high school, Nash was a three-time Post-Dispatch All-Metro selection. For his prep career, Nash had 5,395 rushing yards and 95 touchdowns.

After graduating from East St. Louis, Nash went to Coffeyville, after poor grades prevented him from going to Missouri, his first choice. At Coffeyville, he suffered a serious knee injury but was able to overcome it.

The death of Nash was the second on the Broncos in recent weeks. Cornerback Darrent Williams, 24, was shot and killed Jan. 1 while riding in a limousine after leaving a nightclub in Denver, just hours after the Broncos' season ended.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said in a statement Saturday: "The Denver Broncos organization is once again struck with profound sadness over the tragic loss of one of our players. This is a tremendous tragedy and our hearts go out to the entire Nash family."

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement: "The Broncos family has suffered a great loss with the passing of Damien Nash. I am stunned and deeply saddened by this tragedy, and send my deepest condolences to Damien's family."

WTF man how does this stuff keep happening to top athletes. These guy have some of the best medical attention in the world. Something cant be right. When I was growing up I only heard of 2 athletes dying early like this (Hank Gather and Reggie Lewis) thats it now it seems that every year it happens atleast 10 times.(NFL,College and High School). Both of my children although young are both athletes and this is really starting to scare me. All that conditioning and training cant be bad for you could it?

:(

What a shame. If it was a heart ailment, then his brother will probably feel awful considering the circumstances. Sad days.
 tragic enough to lose a brother at such a young age---given the circumstances that led to the death, my wish is for Darris to be able to cope and move on...

heartfelt sympathy to he and his family in this time of sadness

Terrible news and very sad. Whenever someone dies young it lets all of us know how mortal we are. My dad was young when he dropped dead of a heart attack.

This sucks.

This offseason sucks. Hopefully is family is surrounded by love ones to help them through this horrible situation.

How ironic is this: The proceeds of the event will benefit the Darris Nash Find A Heart Foundation, which raises money for heart transplant research. Darris Nash, 25, is the older brother of Damien Nash, a standout running back at Riverview and East St. Louis who played at Missouri and is now with the Denver Broncos. The foundation was created last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

I hate to admit it but part of me was hoping they found steroids or some illegal drugs in his system. Too scary to imagine someone that young and in shape just dropping dead like that. RIP
