Haven't heard much about DJax this offseason. Knocks against him that he can't catch, is old/washed up, creaky knees, but when he was healthy this guy was a top-20 wr. Throw out last year in SF. Can this guy recapture some of his former production in Denver? I think they'll be throwing a lot - anyone see 60-900-8 or am I smoking something?

I'm not joking -- cut those numbers in half and that's closer to what he'll get. The past is the past, he is what he is, and you really should forget that name was ever associated with elite numbers. It will just cloud your judgment. You said you haven't heard much about him this offseason, so I'll fill you in. He's the 4th WR now in terms of targets, behind Marshall, Royal, and Stokley. The TE and RB will have more catches. In Seattle he was the #1 option. No more.

He may get extra looks early on, but he is not slated to be a starter (Marshall/Royal). And from what I can tell Stokley will play the slot. So I'm not seeing how D-Jax will put up big numbers as a 4th receiver. Add Scheffler to the mix as another guy higher on the receiving food chain and his numbers would get even more muddied.

IMO, unless he can overtake Royal, there's not much to like about Jackson.

If you've been reading Footballguys for any amount of time, you'd know that we are high on Darrell Jackson. In fact, here's what we said about Jackson back on August 25th, 2008:
DEN - Broncos WR Jackson On Track To StartSource: Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain NewsDenver Broncos WR Darrell Jackson said on Monday that he has healed "tremendously" and expects to start in place of suspended WR Brandon Marshall in the team's opening game. "My job is to get open and catch the ball and make blocks, things like that," he said. "I don't have to mesh with the offensive line or learn too many schemes. I run the routes that called and block. And I know everything that's going on."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]He'll give way to Marshall soon enough but if you're looking for a value in the first couple of games of the season (assuming that's where Marshall's suspension stays) then Jackson could be your guy.
[[[[[[[[[[[[[MY VIEW]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]Folks, it looks like DJax is gonna start and if you know anything about Mike Shannahan, it's that once he states who his starters are, he sticks to his guns.

That summarizes exactly what I said . . . he'll get looks early on but the true starters are Marshall and Royal. If Marshall's suspension is reduced to 2 games, that gives D-Jax two games filling in for Marshall and then he goes back to being the 4th receiver.

Unless he's, like, uber awesome. Then what?

I think it's absurd to just assume that Eddie Royal is a firmly entrenched starter before he ever plays in an NFL game. I know what Shanahan said. I just don't buy it. Not yet anyway. We'll see what happens early on, but I could easily see D-Jax as the No. 2 WR for the bulk of the season. I could also see him being hurt and ineffective. But to write him off because of some rookie is ridiculous.

Has Shanahan actually ever said that Royal was a starter ahead of Jackson?

I know he was named 'the starter' when D Jax was out - and also for when Marshall was out and DJax was on the other side. But was it ever explicit that Royal was ahead of DJax? Totally possible I missed it, but I don't remember anything of the sort.

I believe I read that, but I dont have a link. Can homers confirm or deny this?

This was reported by the Rocky Mountain News. The reporter said that they "expected" Royal to continue to start even after Marshall returned from his suspension. That would leave DJax fourth after Marshall, Royal, and Stokely. I have not seen an official depth chart released by the Broncos yet. You can bet that Shanahan will stick with whoever gets hot, so I am watching the first game or two closely.
