Read this today and was wondering who's gonna be the in the box guy in 2010?

49ers | Taylor Mays could land starting spot at free safety (Sat Apr 24, 02:22 AM) - San Francisco 49ers rookie S Taylor Mays could step in immediately in the 49ers' secondary, reports The Associated Press. The 49ers may move FS Dashon Goldson to strong safety if Mays is able to handle the free safety position.

Our View: Mays seek-and-destroy mentality will fit well in the 49ers defense.

Thanks

Nothing I have seen or heard indicates that Mays can play FS in the NFL

I would still expect him to be the SS. It may just mean that the 49ers will use a more interchangeable system like a lot of other teams

The text of the article mentions only that Mays played FS in college. There's no speculation that he'll play FS for the Niners and no mention of a potential Goldson move to SS.

Mays did play free safety at USC, but concerns about his coverage skills were the reason he fell in the draft. Goldson is much better in coverage, Mays is a better fit in the box. I'd be very surprised if they lined up otherwise.

Hi Marc,

Yah, Mays will be in the box to start.

What unique about Goldson is that he's a headhunter who can cover. His versatility will allow the team to work Mays in where he's comfortable.

There were 57 defensive backs drafted in the second or third rounds between 2006 – 2009.

There is a 4% chance of drafting a fantasy starter (2 players).

Even though I love his heavy-hitting ways, I'd only want Mays in Keeper/Dynasty leagues.
