Davenport cut by Green Bay (1 Viewer)

Nemesis Enforcer

Per blogger he was cut today. Is Herron or Gado going to be backing up Green? Didn't see too much of either of them in the preseason. Anyone have any info?

Was this expected? I know he was injured frequently but Davenport showed real ability when the opportunity arose.

I can't imagine that he'll stay unemployed for very long.

There were some rumors that he would be cut.

Thank god...was so sick of the buzz around this guy. He's a FB body trying to play halfback and just couldn's stay healthy either. Very happy thsi experience is over and they can move onto finding a real 'future' behind Green.

Packers | Thompson says it was difficult to release Davenport

Published Sun Sep 3 12:58:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) PackersNews.com reports Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson said it was a difficult decision to drop free agent RB Najeh Davenport, who was cut by the team Saturday, Sept. 2. "He's done a good job. He's done everything we asked. He battled through some injuries. We had some teams inquire about him, nothing ever came to fruition," said Thompson. He added the team wanted to keep RBs Ahman Green, Samkon Gado and Noah Herron.

I hesitate to ask, but wouldn't he make a decent goal line back?In Pittsburgh? Or is Cowher too smart to sign him?

I think its abotu 75% that he signs with Miami to back up Ronnie Brown. Miami is only carrying 2 RBs right now so Davenport is a nice fit.

totally bewildered by Davenport being cut instead of Gado.

all that i've heard all along is that Gado hasn't picked up the offense, hasn't looked confident, doesn't seem to be a good fit for the scheme... wierd.

Davenport actually looked good this pre-season. guess they didn't want to wait for the inevitable minor injury to sideline him again.

Exactly, Najeh has earned the right to go out on his own terms. Pushing him out the door in the interest of "the future" is disrespectful and pure crazy talk.

And Gado is a city worker trying to play RB , so tired of hearing about him ( he should be cut also ) :loco: :loco:

You weren't paying a whole lot of attention then. The bit about Gado not picking up the blocking schemme was mentioned once during the first OTA's.

Once real Training Camps rolled around;

Training Camp Report:

Much was made during mini-camps and the organized team activities of Gado's struggles to adapt to the new zone-blocking scheme, but he has looked much smoother and more decisive when his number has been called thus far in camp.

With Ahman Green still recovering from a torn quadriceps tendon, Gado has been working with the No. 1 offense the last couple of days and doing what's expected.

"I think Samkon, the way he runs the football, he's a guy you're going to see be more productive when he puts the pads on," McCarthy said. "He's not a slithery ... he's more of a power runner. I've been very pleased with him once we got into the padded work."

Gado confessed he probably makes the scheme more complicated than it needs to be, but he is letting his natural football instincts dictate his play more and it's helping him.

"I still think I have a long ways to go, but I'm encouraged with the growth I've seen so far," Gado said. "The thing that needs to be done is just to turn your brain off and just play. That's where I think the progress begins, not so much thinking. That's what I was doing before, thinking, and you can't do that out there."
www.packers.comMcCarthy also made it known to Davenport that he needed to be on the field if he was going to make the team. Davenport promptly injured his hip and missed some practices.

One thing that might have lead you astray is that there are a few posters here who have an agenda. For whatever reason, there's been a lot of negative threads started on Gado.

He did go out on his own terms.A guy who only managed to suit up for 39 out of 64 games, earned the right to be cut.

As I posted elsewhere, I'm not surprised by Davenport being cut. I don't think he did enough to keep a roster spot, and when he missed more time with another injury the writting was on the wall. I don't think his departure has as much to do with positives for other backs, but more just negatives with Davenport. TT also continues to clean house of Sherman picks.

Although Gado has not shown much improvement, I do believe it was the right choice to keep him and continue to work with him. He has shown flashes of talent before, is younger, and has a much cleaner injury record. Gado does have a way to go to be a capable/future starter for Green Bay, but I'd rather see the team work with him and hope he figures things out than to stick with Davenport and hope he can stay healthy.

Where is that "Woosh" smilie? This is the perfect occasion for it.

Oh! My bad :bag:

Can't say I'm surprised or disappointed with this decision. I thought it was a waste to re-sign Davenport in the off-season. He has decent enough talent but his durability issues should have given Thompson enough reason to cut the chord and move on. It'll be interesting to see if the Texans show any interest (assuming they don't trade for a RB) with Sherman there.
