David Bowens signs with Jets (1 Viewer)

Scout.com reports that the Jets signed former Dolphins DE David Bowens to a three-year, $6.1 million contract.

The deal includes a guarantee of $700,000 the first year and incentives that can add an additional $2 million to the contract. Bowens was courted by four teams and adds necessary depth to New York's rotation at defensive end.

Pulled this from rotoworld.

I don't agree with the blurb however.... Coleman (from Miami) and Ellis will most likely be the starting DE's with Haynes from Chicago as depth. In a bind, Bowens might see some time at DE, but more likely only in the rare 4-3 scheme.

This opens the door for the much rumored possible salary cap cut of Barton. Hobson could move to ILB, perhaps even causing Vilma to be moved to the more productive of the two ILB spots as well. Bowens should be able to improve the pass rush as an OLB opposite Bryan Thomas. Barton landing elsewhere becomes much more of a possibilty now. My guess is Vilma gets a bump, Hobson takes a dive and Barton will play elsewhere.... but all of that is crystal balling at this point. My best guess.

Boy, the jets are really bringing in a bunch of spare parts.

Bowens as an OLB? I'm not seeing it. Bryan Thomas worked out, but I don't know about Bowens.

Bowens was playing behind J Taylor in Miami, and in pretty much the same role. BTW, NE was trying to sign him as well.... as was Miami. I think calling Bowens and Coleman spare parts is a bit unfair... they are both reasonably priced guys who have been stuck behind some good football players. Haynes and Wadsworth, sure, they are spare parts, but these two should be starters, and in the Belichick mold to boot. The Pats had interst in both of them, and while it sounds silly, it does increase my confidence that they will contribute.
