David Givens (1 Viewer)

Givens wants to stay in New England and will give the Pats every chance to re-sign him:

Givens wants to stay
Workhorse-If you would, give me the jist of this article. I have no interest in signing up for another subscription, but Id love to hear what he had to say....cut and paste or summarize?? Hook a bro up....thanks.
I'd love to read it as well because this is the first I've seen of this being a possiblity. Solo-As you know the Pats are tight-lipped but there's a lot of speculation around here recently about the WRS. The word is expect big changes. How much of it is media-driven is always up for debate. Yet, right now it seems that El and Jurevicious are going to be names that are linked a lot to the Pats this offseason. I think either one would be a great fit and be a plus. ARE could be used to his fullest by the Pats (like he is with Pittsburgh) and would give them a big play threat they could really use (especially in the return game). As for JJ his size and style would be a nice compliment to Branch.

Another guy I think the Pats may look at hard is Keenan McCardell. He has a history with BB and I guess it was very good. He'd be a great addition as a #3 to go with Branch and whoever ends up at that other position be it ARE, JJ , Givens or someone else. At this point of his career he probably won't have a big pricetag but I think he would be a very big upgrade for the Pats WR corps. He's a quality veteran who should have no problem catching balls from Brady.

IMO this area of the team needs o be upgraded from 2005. It needs more big play ability and more depth. After Givens and Branch last year there wasn't much which made it much easier to focus on those two. Also, the playmaking wasn't what it should have been. If they upgrade here and Watson goes to the next level (which should happen) and guys like Graham and Faulk can stay healthy they could really take their pasing game to another level...and it's very good right now.
Totally agree, Boston. The deep threat really wasnt there, or consistent, and the plays were few and far between. Brady had a great year despite inconsistent play from the outs, so improvement must be made. Im still gutting it out that Givens is getting resigned soon and before they make a play for El or JJ. Havent heard much on either front with those guys, but both are solid team guys who would help any team. I just dont want to see them scare off Give by talking to either of these guys before trying to get something done. Givens is just money when it matters. I like the idea of improvement...just not without him. Itll happen.....faith my friend. What are you thinking or hearing about at RB?? Dillon back? or another direction? Very interested there. Cmon, Work....where's the 411?....

I'm hearing Dillon will definetly be back. First of all it costs more to cut him than it does to keep him so that makes the decision easy. Secondly they believe he was really banged up and that contrituted to his bad season (although they know he's slowing down, they're not fooling themselves). He will be a piece of the puzzle next year. That being said there will be new blood in the backfield. Whether it's a high pick, a mid-pick, a cost friendly free agent or someone with a little more money is anyone's guess. Hopefully whoever it is will be able to become the full time RB in 2007 because this probably is Dillon's last year unless the 2004 version suddenly reappears which is a longshot. I do think he can help and play a lot better than he did in 2005 but I don't see him being the stud he was. He needs help and by draft day they'll either have added a decent free agent or a pick within the first three rounds. By the way this is where the Cedric Cobbs pick hurts. If he was what they thought they drafted he'd be perfect right now. Too bad he was football dumb, hurt and not in any rush to make his presence felt. This is a very good year to find a RB. There's quality in the draft as well as the free agent class. When it's all said and done I'm optimistic that between an addition and keeping both the RBs and O line healthy the run game will be much improved over 2005. You know that's an area that BB will be stressing.

At receiver, it's no stretch to say that New England receiver David Givens is high on the team's list. Coach Romeo Crennel knows Givens, and the team thinks his Super Bowl experience will help Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow.

Givens could be in Cleveland for a visit as soon as Friday -- though the Browns would have to convince Givens he'd be wise to join a team as the No. 2 receiver opposite Edwards. What's most convincing is usually money, and the Browns have the room and money to spend.

``I do think we need a veteran wide receiver,'' Savage said. ``At the same time there's no guarantee that we'll be able to get one.''

What good is getting a receiver with great hands when they have a QB with a crappy arm who can't deliver it too said receiver. Please FFL gods don't let Givens go to Cleveland.

Sorry fellas. I didn't see the request for the projo article summary:

David Givens' departure from New England may not be a given after all.

While he's bound to find generous suitors when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 22 days, Givens' agent, Brad Blank, says that staying in New England is his client's first choice.

"New England has been very good for David and he loves it here," said Blank. "He would prefer to stay with the Patriots, and we have every intention of making sure the Patriots have every chance to keep him here."

I think a lot depends on what Givens thinks he's worth. There was some speculation in Boston that he would probably be looking for 4 or 5 years and $20-25 million. On the surface, I'm not sure he's worth that much, but there's probably a team that will give him money close to that. And if that's what he really wants, then he will not be a Patriot.
Totally agree about the money aspect. The Pats have been haggling with him for two years and nothing has gotten done. I've never heard any numbers but that would indicate money will be a key factor in his decision (isn't it always). As far as the Pats go if they haven't signed up by now I'd be very surprised if he resigns. A few things about Givens:*It's a thin WR class so Givens is hitting the market at the right time. If Wayne resigns or gets franchised by the Colts that's even better news for him.

*I like Givens a lot. He's sort of a mini-Hines Ward in that he's a physical WR who's not afraid to throw his body around. He's made some very big catches for the Pats over the years. He's also very well like by his teammates.

*A knock on Givens is he gets dinged up a lot. He has never played a full 16 games in a season.

*I'm pretty sure the Pats have planned for him to leave since last summer. People forget but the Pats made a strong push for Derrick Mason last summer. They actually offered more than the Ravens.

*Givens is a very difficult player to put a dollar figure on. He's good but I have my doubts about him being a quality #1. There's not a team in the NFL he won't help but his overall value will be directly tied to his contract. A team could regret overpaying for him.

*As stated I have to believe the Pats have a plan in place for WR. If they lose Givens (and it appears to be the case) that leaves them with one very good WR and not much more. Davis can help but he's not top three material. Troy Brown is nothing more than a depth guy. Bethel is garbage and Sam is MIA. That means you can expect to see at least two and maybe three more new WRs on the Pats in 06. As far as who it is nothing would surprise me from going after a stud to a sort of WR by committe situation. The guy I think is the best fit is Moulds if he is cut. A Moulds-Branch-Watson trio would be pretty potent. Add in Graham, a decent #3 and that is some quality firepower. I think WR was not a big plus for the Pats this year. It is a unit that needs to be upgraded as a whole.
I agree. Hes definetely a top-tier WR2 though.

Thanks, Work. Just the music my ears need to hear. Let's see what happens here. It would be strange at this point for Givens to be signed by another club.

Isn't it a little early to be writing off Frye?

I don't mean any disrespect to anyone who's posted a "Givens wants to stay" article, but I think that information is useless. Of course he wants to stay. So does Vinatieri, McGinest, and everyone else.

This is a winning program, and with the league's best QB and the league's best coach, this team has a very, very bright future. It all comes down to money; it always comes down to money. Sure, these guys might offer somewhat of a hometown discount to stay, but unless the Patriots are at least in the ballpark when it comes to the money, these guys won't be back.

For the record, I'm predicting that McGinest and Vinatieri stay, but I'd be absolutely shocked if Givens returns. And it wouldn't completely surprise me if Vinatieri leaves, because it sounds like he's just out for a big payday, and I don't see Belichick and Pioli breaking the bank to retain him. I think Stephen Neal and Tom Ashworth could go either way; my guess is that they keep one of those guys, but not both - but again, it wouldn't surprise me if both leave.

Wow, re-reading that last paragraph, I sound like John Kerry. I said a whole lot without really saying anything.

Borat, youre realism is absolutely killing me right now, and though I appreciate the insight, cant you go direct your plague of logic and common sense toward Cowboy or Steelers fans?? I need to know for atleast a couple more days that the dynasty still has hope. Nice job.

David Givens appears to be entering his final hours in a Patriots uniform. Free agency starts at 12:01 a.m. Monday morning and agent Brad Blank yesterday said he has had no contact with the organization since speaking to director of player personnel Scott Pioli following a playoff victory over the Jaguars on Jan. 7. The Patriots appear willing to let Givens walk, and Blank can’t necessarily blame them. “The Patriots have to make a business decision,” Blank said. A number of teams are expected to have interest in Givens, particularly the Browns, who are coached by former Pats defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, have millions to spend, and are in the market for a wideout.

This article really sums up the situation. It would be great to have Givens back and he'd love to be back. Yet, financially it makes more sense for Givens to test the market because he will probably get a deal much larger than what the Pats will give him. This is very similar to the Woody situation where there's nothing personal going on and it's being handled professionally and with class. It's just a simple fact of life in a salary cap world. In the end Givens will be worth more to another team than he is to the Patriots. He has been a very good player for the Pats and I think I speak for most Patriot fans when I say I wish him very well with a new club and am thankful to him for playing very hard and making some huge plays while he was in Foxboro.

Holy "slapinthefacewiththeironskilletofreality" Batman!Im torn like an old sweater. Wanting Givens back to clutch it up for the Pats vs seeing one of my better fantasy receivers potentially go somewhere like Philly where he could potentially put up spectacular #s. But if he goes to Cleveland, Ill simply jump off the nearest bridge. :hophead:

It seems a lot of people thought he may sign with the Browns. Now that they have signed Joe J, where will Givens end up? Philly? SF?

Per his agent reported on Channel 5 (ABC) in Boston:

Has limited his possibilities down to the Patriots, Texans, and Dolphins.

Sorry, no link, came from the tv.

Back w/ the Pats is the best FA move they could have made this year. Still need somebody taller to either step up or come out of the draft.
