David Harris & Jonathan Vilma (1 Viewer)

With the emergence of D. Harris this year, where does that leave Jonathan Vilma? Can they both be Top 20 guys? Does Vilma go traded this offseason?

I am really looking forward to this discussion. I really think that Vilma would be better suited in a 4-3 scheme. I think he would be an amazing fit for the Bengals as well as a couple other teams. I think the Jets realize that he is not suited for their defense and Harris is the better option. I would be very surprised if Vilma is a Jet for long.

Yeah, the lack of responses so far indicates 2 things:

1) Vilma's health is still a big ?

2) no possible destinations for Vilma have been rumored yet

Unless he's so severely hurt that he'll miss the 2008 season, I expect Vilma to be traded by draft day to a 4-3 team.

Oops, got sidetracked and forgot about this thread. Should definitely be a good and fluid discussion as free agency and the draft approach.

Here's what we know:

1. Vilma wasn't productive (or happy) in the 3-4.

2. Vilma's knee injury still isn't clear -- the only new detail I've seen is that he had "bone chips" removed.

3. Publicly, the Jets are still saying Vilma is a part of their future plans.

Speculating:

1. Vilma could certainly be traded. There are some linebackers who may become available on the open market (Briggs, Dansby) and a couple of interesting draft prospects, but there should be a market for a guy like Vilma. It's highly unlikely that a 3-4 team will trade for him given his attitude about playing 3-4 ILB, so any deal would be a major upgrade in IDP value.

2. Because the team isn't publicly shopping him, there hasn't been much speculation about a future destination. Any 4-3 team based on speed with a crappy/aging MLB would be a good guess. That's a fairly long list.

3. Unless the Jets are supremely bad and Vilma decides he's going to have a much better attitude about the 3-4 scheme, there's no chance of both being top 20 players. I'm still looking at the data, but there's every reason to expect that Harris would hold the majority of the ILB value.

I really think That Herm makes a move for Vilma if hes healthy... I know a couple of you say that it won't happy, but I think it does. JV is a Herm pick, and one of the few good ones... the current staff really seems like they want nothing to do with JV and should get what they can.

Vilma in Limbo

Newsday.com reports Jets LB Jonathan Vilma's knee isn't 100% healthy yet, and he knows there's a chance he may never wear that green and white shirt again. "That's outside of my control," he said of speculation that he could be traded this offseason. "All I can do is worry about my knee." It was the right knee that ended Vilma's season after seven games. He had surgery in November to remove bone chips from the joint, still walks with a limp and has not yet tried to run. He continues to rehab near his home in Miami. "I'm building back the muscle because I was on the crutches for so long," he said. "I can walk, I can move, but there's no rush to get into running, especially with such a long offseason. We're just taking it easy, taking the time to get it right." Vilma said he is unsure whether he will be physically ready to participate in OTAs or minicamps this spring. He said that is something the coaches will have to decide but added that it doesn't seem worth risking further injury or derailing his rehab progress to learn a defensive system he already knows. Vilma said he hasn't spoken with the organization about his future. He has two years remaining on his contract.

And this one

Bengals Interested in Vilma

The Dayton Daily News reports the Cincinnati Bengals may look to address their problems at linebacker in free agency first. The team is not expected to make a big splash in free agency, but there is one player who could be on their radar screen and that is Jets ILB Jonathan Vilma. Vilma missed nine games this season with a knee injury and isn't expected to return to the Jets next season. Word is that Bengals HC Marvin Lewis had high regard for Vilma when he was drafted in 2004.

This might be a good spot for Vilma :bag:

Yes I am a Vilma and a Harris owner on the same roster.

Don't forget about the Pats being players for Vilma. There is a need, and they have had a good look at him over the past few years during game preparation.

I doubt that Vilma would opt to go to a team that runs a 3-4 defense.

Attractive 4-3 MLB options could include KCC, DET, CIN, DEN, PHI, NOS.

I cant see the jets/pats doing any deals for a while.
No deal needed if he's waived outright.
He's in the final years of his rookie contract so he's dirt cheap and still holds value across the league, why would they release him?

Why would the Jets let Vilma play through the final year of his contract next year and then lose him with nothing in return?Wouldn't the logical thing be to try to trade him now and try to get a draft pick in return?

You and I are saying the same thing, I was talking about why would they release him to the other poster. Absolutely they will trade him, releasing him makes zero sense.

No way they release him and get nothing... his track record shows he's an elite talent at that position and to not get at least a 3rd rounder for him would be highway robbery by whatever team signs him.

Mikey exactly my point, but i disagree on the 3rd rounder, with the history of knee problems, plus what looks to be a pretty serious knee injury this year, I don't seen any team giving a 1st day pick for him. I think at best they get a 4th, but most likely they get a 5th.

I think its more likely a player for player deal. I dont believe the Jets would get fair value if they had to trade Vilma for picks. They would be better off targeting a player that has talent but hasnt lived up to expectations and might be a good fit in their system. Shaun Rodgers comes to mind because of his size, and how that might transition nicely to NT in the 3-4. Vilma (if healthy) would be a big upgrade over Lenon in Detroits 4-3

Coach Rod Marinelli acknowledged at the NFL Combine that the Lions have interest in Jonathan Vilma.

The Jets have given Vilma, 25, permission to seek a trade. "He's a heck of a player," Marinelli said. Vilma would likely work well as a middle linebacker in Marinell's Tampa 2 scheme.Source: Detroit News

if they seriously pursue vilma the lions better keep big shaun. while vilma and ernie sims would be as fast and explosive combo at LB there is in the NFL it would also make them one of the smallest LB'er cores. they'd need some help upfront to keep bodies off those 2 for there superior speed to be effective.

"Jonathan Vilma is "very very close" to becoming a New Orleans Saint, according to the Washington Post. The New Orleans Times Picayune reports the Jets and New Orleans are "close to finalizing a deal."

The Redskins "nosed around" Vilma, but never showed serious interest. The Lions also wanted him, but may be less willing to give up draft picks. Newsday guesses that the Saints will be sending a third-round pick to New York. It's not out of the question that the Jets would in turn send that pick to Carolina for Kris Jenkins. this is just one link, I've seen several today myself -

Considering how average Fujita and Shanle are on the outside, I would imagine that a healthy Vilma back in the middle will be an IDP monster.
