DB: Which CB/S could make an impact as Returner in 2010?

Please indicate whether PR, KR or both?

My league awards points per yd returned and it looks like there might be a few steals here (assuming the other GMs in the league are not paying attention... :-) )

Alphonso Smith (both)

Danieal Manning (KR only, probably)
Anyone have any insight on Lardarius Webb (BAL CB) for 2010? He was racking up points on KR duty and even saw some time as a starter at CB2 for a few games. Then he tore his knee up.I did find this little bit of info:

Head coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that Webb (knee) will be ready to play this season, the Baltimore Sun reports.

As a Webb owner in a number of leagues, I've been following his news keenly and the seems to be conflicting stories about whether he will be ready to go Week 1 or not. Webb will play this season.....which if you are a word smith like many of the coaches are.....that's what Harbaugh is saying...Webb will play this season. Anyway, if he hasn't lost anything post surgery then Webb will hopefully keep lighting it up as a returner.Darius Butler (NE) springs to mind as does Ellis Hobbs in Philly. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Javier Arenas (KC) should get a shot at some return duties. Cortland Finnegan & Darrelle Revis might still have punt return duties in 2010.

I can't seem to find anything solid on Leodis McKelvin as returner. I was high on him last year but he had a season ending injury pretty early in the season.

Here's what I know:

- He is expected to be fine for training camp and should be the Bills CB2 to start the season.

- RB Chad Simpson was signed, and given the RB depth (Jackson, Spiller, Lynch) I doubt it was for his RB skills, but more likely for his return skills.

Anyone have any info on this situation?

Javier Arenas looks like he'll be involved in some facet of nickel duty AND return duties.

Does anyone know how likely Akwasi Owusu-Ansah is to earn a starting gig with Dallas, there is talk about him taking over some return duties as well.

Looks like Javi will probably be getting the nod (at least this early on in camp) for return duties over McCluster. I assume that's not a decision related to ability but to the fact that they want DMC focused on offense. Other KC players who have been taking turns on return duty in camp are Maurice Leggett (CB) and Terrance Copper (WR). Having seen them both in the role last season, the job is most likely Javi's to lose. The reason, according to KC mgmt, for drafting a player like Arenas was because 3WR sets are becoming so prolific in the NFL that a Nickle CB is practically a starter. And also to increase the team's overall speed. An added bonus for Arenas on top of probably being on the field a lot in defense for tackles, and his return numbers, is that he is a good blitzer as was seen during his time at Bama and early on in training camp for KC. I believe it was Haley, or one of the coaches, who referred to Arenas as "our McCluster on defense".As for AOA, I was reading at http://www.idpguru.com/2010/08/2010-idp-return-men.html and he had this to say

"AOA is coming off a shoulder injury but has impressed coaches so far in training camp with his natural abilities in the return game. He also has a chance to become the starting free safety in Dallas."

Arenas will play nickel a lot and could rack up some tackles, and will be the primary KR and PR. Lot of value there.

Chiefs Still Seeing What Dexter McCluster Can Do As A Returner

The Chiefs drafted two players this season -- Dexter McCluster and Javier Arenas -- that will likely fill the return-man void they've been missing since Dante Hall.

Through the first week of training camp, it's been McCluster who has been out there the most even though Arenas is the more experience kick and punt returner.

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said before training camp that it's important not to get too wrapped up in where guys are in the depth chart and who's first or second in.

"Understand that when you have a guy like Jon McGraw," Pioli began, "who's so smart, and knows everything about both safety positions, cornerback positions and where the linebackers are...sometimes it's more important for a younger player, or a less experienced player -- whether it's Kendrick Lewis or Donald Washington, Eric Berry, Reshard Langford or DaJuan Morgan -- to get more reps because Jon knows what to do.

"So, sometimes when you look at people in certain situations, have an understanding of why it appears certain guys are at certain levels in the depth chart. Don't let yourself get fooled all the time."

That helps explain why it's been McCluster, and not Arenas, seeing most of the kick and punt returns.

McCluster took a combined four punt returns over his final two seasons at Ole Miss. He took no kick returns. So putting him out there suggests they're trying to find out what he can do in that area -- it doesn't mean he's ahead of Arenas, as the Kansas City Star pointed out this morning.

“Potentially great return guys,” coach Todd Haley said. “One (Arenas) was a great college returner. McCluster did a lot of other things. That’s a little more speculative of what his abilities are there."

By speculative, he means we have no idea what he can do there so we're going to give him more reps in that area because Arenas is already highly accomplished as a returner. With four years of college tape, they know what Arenas can do. They don't know what McCluster can do.

So while McCluster has been the first one out in kick and punt returns, it doesn't mean he's no. 1 on the depth chart.

I can't seem to find anything solid on Leodis McKelvin as returner. I saw a report on ESPN that stated CJ Spiller was going to be the first team RB as well as handle all kickoff duties... Which seems VERY odd to me. Granted, Spiller is a rare talent, but why risk your 1st rounder back there getting killed??

MJD did a lot of returning for a couple of years and he never got hurt. So did Adrian Peterson and Jonathan Stewart.

Fair points - I remember MJD being the top returner, but don't recall stewart or ADP doing it -- were they pressed into duty. Regardless, I do think it goes against conventional wisdom to put your top draft pick and #1RB returning kicks - even if they would be a little better at it than the current person.

It seems to be the trend to ease the RB into service on offense, but use returns as a way to get the ball into the hands of a playmaker without risking them blowing a pass protection and getting the QB killed.Stewart did a lot of returning, but Peterson just did it for a couple of games. In both cases they had another back they were splitting time with on offense. It wasn't a desperation move where they just had noone else to do the returns....they did it to try and get more use out of their most athletic players.

Who says getting injured returning kicks is any more likely than getting injured in any other play?Maybe there's something to what you're saying, but I don't think returning kicks is any more dangerous than running the ball against an NFL defense. This is especially true with the rule changes to defending the run back in recent years (no more wedge formations). If he can help the team in that capacity, by all means, put him out there.

Kyle Wilson has the starting right corner job locked pending Revis' reconciliation with the Jets.

Does anyone know how likely he is to be involved in the return game as well?

do you remember reggie bush returning punts?I think it's stranger that they'd have revis return kicks.

cant find the link, but so far Kyle is handling punts while Brad Smith is still returning kicks.

Arenas will play nickel a lot and could rack up some tackles, and will be the primary KR and PR. Lot of value there.
3/82 yards on Friday. Also a 99-yard KR TD which was called back on a holding that didn't affect the play. Will be interesting to see how he plays in the defense.
