The Cowboys will be in the market for a strong safety. There are strong indications that SS Roy Williams’ time in Dallas has run out, and his replacements were unimpressive. The team would like a hitter like Williams but won’t sacrifice coverage skills to find one.

No surprise hear. Expect Dallas to try and address this thru free agency. Two of the higher profile run/strong safeties, Yeremiah Bell and Sean Jones could be targets, both are familar with 3-4. However you have to think Miami would like to keep Bell, he could be tagged (franchise).

Free-agents-to-be key for Miami Dolphins

As the Dolphins steamroll into the postseason, the team's top four impending unrestricted free agents have reinforced how important they have been to this turnaround -- and in Andre' Goodman's case, more vital than Miami could have imagined.

Goodman, Vernon Carey, Channing Crowder and Yeremiah Bell showed their worth during the December playoff push (Miami badly missed Crowder in the Chiefs game), and the Dolphins have indicated an interest in keeping all four. But the issue is how much the Dolphins will be willing to pay. All four will be tested against Baltimore:

• Carey believes his ''game has stepped up'' at right tackle, and coach Tony Sparano agreed. Sparano also likes how Carey has assumed a bigger leadership role since guard Justin Smiley's injury.

''This is the best Carey has played,'' CBS insider/former Redskins and Texans general manager Charley Casserly said.

Carey, 27, got the better of the Jets' Shaun Ellis last Sunday, and he has another tough matchup with Baltimore's Trevor Pryce, who has 4.5 sacks and gave Carey problems Oct. 19. And the Ravens have the NFL's No. 2 run defense.

''Everyone thinks of [Carey] as a big guy, but he's very nimble on his feet,'' Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning said.

Former NFL personnel executive Mike Lombardi -- now with The National Football Post -- expects Carey, who has never missed an NFL game because of injury, to command a contract similar to right tackles Tony Pashos (Jacksonville) and David Stewart (Tennessee), each of whom got $10 million guaranteed. ''I think he'll stay with Miami,'' Lombardi said. The sides haven't discussed money.

• It's no coincidence that Miami gave up 180 yards on 21 rushes against the Chiefs without Crowder but 80 yards on 21 carries against the Jets with Crowder, who led Miami with nine tackles Sunday. ''Channing being out there has an awful lot to do with that,'' Sparano said, crediting the defensive line, too.

Crowder, 25, was second on the team with 114 tackles, and his swarming to the ball will be vital against a Baltimore offense that he called ``by far the most physical we faced. All their linemen are big, nasty and do dirty [stuff].''

But Crowder -- making $1 million in the final year of a four-year deal -- expressed doubts about his future here. He said Miami's first contract offer would keep him among the NFL's lowest-paid starting linebackers.

''They offered me a special teams contract'' in terms of value, he said. ``I'm the 106th-paid linebacker in the league. I'd love to stay here, but if they were that interested, they would have done something by now. There are 31 other teams I can play for. I can't do much, but I can do this.''

But Crowder also said he didn't make enough big plays (no sacks, no interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery). Entering the offseason, ''the No. 1 question I would want to find out about is his health,'' Casserly said of Crowder's troublesome left knee.

• Bell led the team in tackles (120), broke up 10 passes, forced three fumbles and had a sack and a fumble recovery. ''He's had a great year -- they might even need to use their franchise tag on him,'' Lombardi said.

Bell, 30, will be needed not only in run support Sunday but also in coverage against Baltimore tight end Todd Heap. ''He's a very valuable part,'' Sparano said. ``Not only is he a physical presence that people have to worry about, but he's a guy that can cover.''

Nnamdi Asomugha wants to play for Rob Ryan and will sign with Cleveland.

 
Sharper is almost certainly gone. The vibe is that Sharp wants to drive his Shakescalade to a city with a team that has a different style defense than the Tampa 2. And because Tyrell Johnson has proven he can step in and play effectively, the Vikings probably aren’t going to flag down that Shakescalade.

Appearing on ESPNews Friday, impending free agent Nnamdi Asomugha said he's hoping for a "new beginning" somewhere next season.

However, Asomugha said the new beginning "could happen in Oakland" if the Raiders get their act together this offseason. That's unlikely to happen, but even less likely is the Raiders letting "Aso" go when they can franchise him.

When a team uses the franchise tag or transition tag, it’s a one-year tender offer of a high base salary paid during the season and includes no signing bonus. Every dollar counts against the cap.

Alex Marvez, of FOXSports.com, reports the Cleveland Browns have re-signed unrestricted free-agent FS Mike Adams to a three-year deal, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Pittsburgh Steelers free agent cornerback Bryant McFadden has agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals, according to a league source.

McFadden received $5 million in guaranteed money, compensation that will be paid out entirely during the first year of the deal.

McFadden was drawing interest from four NFL teams: the Cardinals, the Steelers, the Miami Dolphins and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nice group of young CB's the Cards have.
