DE Leonard Williams, SEA (1 Viewer)

Meh. Redundant skill set with wilk and richardson. Don't get it.

even if you trade Wilkerson this is a lateral move at best (and expecting anyone to become Wilkerson is being generous. Guy is a stud)

Wilk is in the last year of his contract.

And he's the exact kind of guy you resign (or franchise at the very least). Guy is a productive high character cornerstone.

Sheldon Richardson's suspension makes this an even smarter pick....had to figure the Jets knew about his issues and kept it quiet or some team would have likely jumped them for Williams. As a Jet fan I have shifted....sign Wilkerson and deal Richardson when his contract is up....they should have a dominant line for a year or two and then deal Richardson to the highest bidder.

This isn't madden. Other teams will not pay much for a player that is a tool.

Unless they are the Seahawks.

SNY reports the Jets are willing to trade contract-year DT Leonard Williams.

The Jets evidently have no plans to re-sign the No. 6 overall pick of the 2015 draft, who was also on the block last spring. Not re-signing his own players was a major theme for Adam Gase in Miami. Still only 25, Williams has never generated lofty sack totals, but he has earned consistently solid marks from Pro Football Focus. He's also never missed a game with injury.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports impending free agent DL Leonard Williams is seeking $15 million annually.

The Giants have been expected to re-sign Williams since giving up multiple picks for him at the trade deadline. Williams made $14.2 million last season and isn't going to be taking less than that as a 25-year-old free agent. The Giants have more than $60 million in cap space, so money shouldn't be an issue. It's possible Williams could be a transition tagged if a long-term deal isn't reached, which would pay him roughly $13 million.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Giants "aren't close" on an extension with free agent DL Leonard Williams.

The Giants have looked unwilling to meet Williams' asking price to this point, which is expected to be at least $15 million annually. With talks not progressing, franchising Williams remains a possibility, but there's now a chance they let him hit the open market. After giving up third and fifth-round picks for Williams, it would be a letdown if the Giants didn't get something done.

I read the other day through FBGs feed that they were very close on the deal and that they were just waiting to cost themselves a fifth instead of a fourth rounder to the Jets, who would get compensation if Gettleman signed Williams before FA.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Giants are expected to tag DL Leonard Williams.

That's how things have been headed with the Giants unwilling to meet Williams' $15 million AAV asking price. It's not clear if Williams will be franchised or transition tagged, which would pay him roughly $13 million in 2020. Keeping Williams was always in the Giants' plan after giving up multiple picks for him last year. The sides will have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal.
Please be the transition tag...

Giants GM Dave Gettleman suggested Leonard Williams could play out this season on the franchise tag.

Williams is owed $16.1 million under the tag — a massive salary for the cash-strapped Giants. He was asking for $15 million AAV in long-term talks, so extending him wouldn't make much difference unless the Giants backloaded his contract. It sounds like New York is open to letting Williams play 2020 on a one-year deal. The sides have until July 15 to get something done.

Sign Clowney for 4 year $60M (around 25-$30m guaranteed) and pull  the Franchise tag from under Leonard Williams.

He will be much more willing to negotiate once he realizes he has no taker in in the $12-16m  ...then sign Williams for 3 year $33m around $20m guaranteed

Then Focus on Oline with 1st 2 picks T and C in the draft

Giants DL Leonard Williams signed his franchise tag.

Williams will play the 2020 season on the franchise tag -- likely as a defensive tackle -- and then will test free agency the following season if the two parties don't work out a multi-year contract by July 15. Williams has been a bust since being the No. 6 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, but he has some leverage to get a multi-year contract from the Giants after GM Dave Gettleman traded two mid-round picks for him last season. It will be a waste of assets if Williams leaves after 1.5 seasons, although Williams may be a sunk cost. He made 0.5 sacks in 2019.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Leonard Williams will file a grievance against the Giants for franchise tagging him as a defensive tackle instead of defensive end.

It's a difference of $1.7 million, so it's no laughing matter. Williams spent the vast majority of his 2019 snaps on the interior, however, so he is extremely unlike to emerge victorious in the arbitration room. The fact that the sides are headed to a grievance hearing suggests they will be unlikely to reach a long-term accord before the July 15 deadline. Amazingly, Williams is still two months shy of his 26th birthday.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano's considers it unlikely that Leonard Williams will sign a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline.

Williams signed his franchise tag back in April, though he later filed a grievance. He was tagged as a tackle and wants to be paid as an end. That is one of many reasons a multi-year pact is unlikely. Vacchiano also reports that while GM Dave Gettleman is "all in" on Williams following last year's trade, the rest of the organization is not. Headed into his age-26 campaign, Williams seems likely to become a free agent next spring.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Giants DT Leonard Williams will play out the season on the franchise tag.

Williams certainly hasn't earned a big second contract with his play to this point. As RapSheet points out, the "hope" is Williams excels in new DC Patrick Graham's Patriots-style system and the sides revisit multi-year discussions next offseason. GM Dave Gettleman pretty much had no choice but to tag Williams after trading a pair of picks for him. The former No. 6 overall pick had a measly 0.5 sacks last season with the Jets and Giants and has just 17.5 to his name across five seasons. Williams was Pro Football Focus' No. 51 interior lineman last year.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Leonard Williams' grievance over his position label with the NFLPA remains unresolved.

It's an impactful ruling for the entire league since the franchise tag for DEs would jump from $16.1 million to $17.8 million if Williams, eyeing a potential second consecutive tag, wins his case. Otherwise he'd remain labeled a DT and earn significantly less money in 2021. Those numbers would obviously matter immediately since the Giants are still reportedly trying to ink the 26-year-old to a long-term deal. Williams' play under first-year DC Patrick Graham resulted in a team- and career-high number of sacks (11.5), likely keeping the former in New York for $17-$20 million annually.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Giants DL Leonard Williams is "going to miss time" with an elbow injury.

Rapoport added that Williams is having tests done to determine the extent of the injury. Given how close we are to the end of the season, it's possible that Williams is done for the year. Williams has 5.5 sacks and four TFLs this year. While his numbers are down compared to 2020, he has still been one of the bright spots on a Giants defense that has failed to live up to expectations. His loss will make New York an easier opponent to beat in the trenches on both passing and running plays.

Seahawks acquired DT Leonard Williams from the Giants in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

This marks the first significant trade with the trade deadline looming, and also sets the market for other defensive linemen who may be on the move over the next 24 hours. The 5-2 Seahawks lead the NFC West and now bolster a defensive line that’s that’s helped limit opponents to 96.9 rush yards per game. Williams is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and has tallied 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks through seven games this season. According to Rapoport, the Giants will “take on a large portion” of Williams’ contract in exchange for better draft pick compensation.

Seahawks agreed to terms with DT Leonard Williams on a three-year contract.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $21.5 million per year. Williams was the Seahawks’ big move at the trade deadline. Though the team fell just short of making the playoffs, it wasn’t because the move didn’t work out. Williams racked up four sacks and nine TFLs in 10 games with the Seahawks. Those are solid numbers for any player, let alone an interior pass-rusher. Having already invested a second and a fifth-round pick to acquire Williams, there was no way the Seahawks were letting him walk in free agency just a few months later. He will now return to Seattle with defensive guru Mike Macdonald as his head coach.
