This is for leagues where you give up the draft pick you took him with to keep a player:

Some strategy involved with this, which way do most of you go? Obviously this depends on if you do a random draft every year instead of draft order by rankings.

Draft order for our league is determined by the reverse order of the regular season finish.

We changed to the former option from the latter this year. Some guys were adamant about not wanting to commit to keeper decisions before knowing their draft position.

IMO, the draft order should be determined in some way by previous season (whether inverse order; first team out of the money; or Toilet Bowl)

And unless you would let a guy change his keepers at the draft table but before the draft starts, the keeper declarations should be done right before the draft starts (because.....for simplicity lets say you only keep two and you have Tomlinson and DeAngelo Williams......and in the last pre-season game, Williams breaks a bone....if you have already kept him and released LT2, that is really not fair)

Good topic...this year I screwed up and asked for Keepers first (and somewhat early) then drew (weighted lottery) for the right to choose draft positions.

In years past, we did draft positions first, then 1 week before the draft, elected our keepers (so people have 1 week to do draft planning).

I am actually totally mixed. It seems giving keepers first can help you decide where you prefer to be in Draft position. If you choose draft position first, then you might not have the full picture knowing what players are available.

This is interesting because obviously it can be dependent on so many things. Some leagues do a non snake draft based on rankings. Others do a snake draft but let the worst team choose their draft position.

I believe keepers should be declared a couple days before the draft to allow proper planning, real question is if you want to know draft position prior to declaring keepers.

Example: Someone who drafted Adrian Peterson last year might not want to give up a 1st to keep him if they have a top 3 pick in the draft. But imagine if you have pick #10 or 11, would be much more willing to give that pick up. Guess every league is different.

Our draft order is based on last season's standings and the keepers do not have to be claimed until before the draft.

That's a lot how we do it too. We have a toilet bowl for those who don't make the playoffs, and they are playing for 1st pick, 2nd pick, etc. The playoff people are playing for money, but the ones who get booted out first fall in line behind the toilet bowl players as far as draft order, and the winner of the league picks last this year, and second place picks second to last. Our draft is this Saturday, and we have to declare our keepers on Wednesday by 11:59 p.m.
