Dennis Dixon (1 Viewer)

I just wish they'd give him a chance. He hasn't even taken reps with the first team in practice.
I don't see any point in giving Dixon reps with the first team in practice. The thing going against Dixon is his lack of experience and that isn't going to change by taking a few snaps in practice with the first team. The Steelers coaching staff has already decided to go with Leftwich because of experience and he and Ben are already sharing the first team reps. Splitting them between three QBs would be silly.
I know it is bad form to quote yourself but dang it I really think Tomlin has been screwing the pooch all preseason with the way he has been handling the QBs.I really hopes he gives Leftwich the entire 1st half with the first team on Thursday and then plays Dixon with the 2nd team in the 2nd half. Sit Ben and Charlie, we already know what they can do...
Last pre-season game typically means starters get virtually no run. I think Ben MAY see a series or two just to keep a rhythm, since he'll be out for a month after that - I expect Byron will probably play a series or two as well, and Dixon will play the bulk of the game. I don't think they can start him, but it's good for him to keep getting reps at game speed.

Ordinarily I woudl agree with you but Leftwich needs to get into sync with the first team since Tomlin has been playing games all preseason...

Perhaps, we'll see. I think they need to mitigate the injury risk vs. getting Byron the #1 reps. I feel for Tomlin, he was put in a really bad spot here by Ben.

Yes and no. Obviously Ben put him in a tough spot but Tomlin had plenty of warning. He inserted Leftwich as starter right off the bat in minicamp but for some reason decided to screw around once training camp began. Leftwich should have started with the first team from the start, then maybe give Ben or Dixon a series or two with the first team.Tomlin stated the 3rd preseason game was a dress rehersal for the start of the season and you end up giving your starter 4 attempts with the second team late in the 3rd quarter. Ridiculous...

Disagree with you Godsbrother. I think Tomlin had to test out Dixon with the starters, because Leftwich is just too slow. And given the turnstyle that is Flozell Adams, I think 4 weeks of starting Leftwich may very well mean 0-4. He had to see what Dixon could do. Now we know: Dixon's not ready. So it will be Byron after all, and the Steelers are in BIG trouble...

If they really didn't know that Dixon was not ready then I am REALLY worried about the coaching staff.

He didn't look that bad against 2nd teamers. They had to see if he was first team material.

I don't buy it but even if I did they could have given Dixon some reps with the first team after Leftwich had already gotten some reps. Instead the guy you inserted as starter back in April got 4 attempts with the second team. That does not make any sense whatsoever. I guess they think that Leftwich is already ready? And I find it amusing that people that were so firmly in Dixon's corner after watching him play against backups in two preseason games are ready to jump ship after one poor performance. I think Dixon has talent but all they need right now is a careholder until Ben gets back. Byron Leftwich (or even Charlie Batch) has always been better suited for that role. Hopefully they'll get it all worked out for the first regular season game but in my book Tomlin has mismanaged the QB position this preseason.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Leftwich get some serious work with the 1's week 4. They tried Dixon week 3 and that failed miserably so I would bet Lefty gets some work week 4 and starts. I know that is not how it is usually done but teams usually have picked a starting qb (even for the first 4 weeks) by now. I am guessing the first quarter plus goes to Leftwich with the starters.

I can tell you this-

Ask any Falcon fan who we want to see start week one and it's old dough boy lefty. We had enough of his worthlessness 2 years ago to eat his lunch. Dixon on the other hand would have an advantage to Atlanta's 4-3.

NFL: Dennis Dixon in line to start Steelers' opener

Somewhat by default, Dennis Dixon looks like the starting quarterback for Pittsburgh when the Steelers open the NFL season Sept. 12 at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

Byron Leftwich, the backup to suspended QB Ben Roethlisberger, went down with a sprained left knee in Thursday's exhibition finale, a 19-3 home win over Carolina. Early reports are that Leftwich is likely to miss the regular-season opener.

With Roethlisberger unavailable – NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reduced his suspension Friday from six games to four – Dixon becomes the next in line for the Steelers.

Dixon, a 25-year-old fifth-round draft pick out of Oregon in 2008, has appeared in only two regular-season games. The 6-3, 210-pounder has completed 13 of 27 passes for 148 yards.

The Steelers went 3-1 in the preseason
