Dental Implant anyone? Dentist? (1 Viewer)

So I need an implant. Tooth was crowned but is obviously cracked on the inside as any pressure at all (even chomping a pretzel) causes pain. So it isn't like I think my dentist is trying to rip me off or anything. I definitely feel an implant is the best option.

My issue is the time frame. So, his explanation of the procedure to me was:

Phase 1: Pull the tooth. Fill the hole with amalgam to let the bone heal and regrow. 3 months minimum time to heal.

Phase 2: Set the screw. Let sit another three months to make sure it heals and sets well.

Phase 3: Assuming phase 1 and 2 go ok, have x-rays to measure for the tooth. 2 to 3 weeks for it to be made. Then come back in and have it put in.

Total time, eight months! That just seems really, really excessive and a heck of a long time to go around with a nice missing tooth gap. Is this anywhere near normal? I expected this to be like two months, maybe three at most! Has anyone here had an implant and, if so, what was the total time of the process?

Going off memory, but the time frame seems right to me. Tooth extraction, heal time. Plant the screw, heal time. I had a temporary cap put on at this point. Went back and had the permanent cap put on. I think a total of 9 months-ish.

The timeframe is for a process called Osseointegration, which is the process by which your bone actually grows and fuses to the titanium implant, creating a strong enough bone to support loads (chewing). Loading the implant too early can cause implant failure (Which you do NOT want). 6 months is very standard timetable for osseointegration. Keep in mind you're waiting for bone to grow.

There ARE immediate load-bearing implants on the market but IMO you're much better going the traditional route. This isn't something you want to rush and have screw up. If the implant fails, that site may be screwed for good and you'll be looking at a bridge or something.

Wait it out.

I think they give you a temporary  bridge the whole time. You don't just have to ride out a gap.

Normally we tell people it will be nearly a year,  so your guy is even more confident than we are with the osseointegration process.

Also you're not filling the hole with amalgam, that's silver filling material.. you fill it with a bone grafting material.

Not excessive,  in fact, that's fast

Time frame seems about right... My daughter had to have two done as her Eye teeth came in at such an angle they destroyed the roots of her front teeth.. total procedure took about as long as you are seeing..

Worst part, other then the pain she had to go through, was the pain our pocket book took as after it was all said and done, after insurance, it cost us over 10k

I didn't even catch the bone graft.. yeah you've apparently lost some bone there somehow so that timeline is actually very good.

If you're wanting to do a full arch with 4-6 implants it can run $20-30k.

OK. My wife's cousin's only took about 4 months. He said they did the extraction AND put the screw in place all on the first visit. But apparently that isn't the norm.
