News Articles > Derrick MasonPublished Mon Jan 9 8:47:26 p.m. ET 2012(RotoWire) Mason has decided to retire from football after 15 NFL seasons, according to Scout.com. "I'm done," Mason said. "I won't be playing football. I only knew one way to play football, going all-out and having fun out there."Analysis: Mason's best days passed by awhile ago, but he had a heck of a career and for a long time was as steady as they came from a fantasy perspective, once hitting 1,000-plus yards eight times in a nine-season stretch. He'll retire with 12,061 receiving yards and 66 TD catches.
Very underrated WR. Reminds me of the Jimmy and Rod Smiths of the world.

He had some interesting things to say about the Jets on his way out. I can't find the twitter I saw it on it, but he made it sound like he was framed for their lockerrom problems while he was there.

Poor guy. Has a great career and not only does no one care when he retires, the thread created about his retirement is hijacked to talk about Hines Ward.

Or you could look at it that his career was on par with Ward's. If Ward also retires, they will end up seperated by 22 receiving yards over their careers (playoffs excluded).

I could see this if Mason hadn't appeared in many or any playoff games, but he played in his share. Here are their playoff stats:Mason: 16 games, 49 receptions, 601 yds, 2 td'sWard: 18 games, 88 receptions, 1881 yards, 10 td'sOne of the big reasons that Ward gets mentioned as a HOF candidate is that he came up so big in the playoffs, whereas Mason wasn't an impact player in the postseason, at least not consistently. Ward also has 19 more regular season TD's. And, whether or not you buy into the "Hines Ward is the best blocking WR ever" talk, I think it's fair to say that Ward was the more complete player.Look, I like Derrick Mason a lot and I think he had an amazing career. I'm actually not a Hines Ward fan. But your comparison is off the mark in this case. You simply can't discount the post-season numbers.

What about Mason's 5,100 career kick return yards - is that part of being a complete player?

One of the biggest ##### talkers in the game. The guy never stopped jawing all game long. I loved the moment in that Belicheck feature on NFL Network where Mason kept talking trash to Belicheck all game long in the playoffs a few years back and BB finally goes, "Mason, will you shut the ##### up already!? We'll talk after the game."
