DeSantis and Perdue have some things in common with ... AOC (1 Viewer)

You ask me what deal they got and then go on to list special things that only Disney has.  Weird.  I don't know that much about all of this.  I don't know what you mean when you refer to "the Villages."  Are those run by corporations?   As I said, I hadn't heard of Disney getting special treatment before this whole dust up.  But, if as you're suggesting, they didn't get special treatment why are people bothered by their "not special treatment" being taken away?   If other corporations are getting special treatment I'm in favor of removing that too, regardless of their political stances.
This was a deal given to Disney back in the 60s to help lure them to the state. I am sure that it helped them over the years.

The Villages is a giant retirement community started by a developer maybe 30 years ago. It has spread to 3 counties. I am positive that that district is loaded with sweetheart deals for that developer. Villages biggest claim to fame is they have the highest STD rate in the state. Horny old goats.

We have 2000+ of these kinds of districts in the state.  It might be worth your while to read up on how these things work here and what they provide.  The primary reason people are bothered by the removal of the district is because, by law, their taxes are going to go up in a HUGE way and the counties will have to figure out how to fund all the things the district was paying for themselves.  You'll notice that Disney isn't saying much about this.  There isn't anything for them to say.  It's not like they are going to shut down and move.  They'll simply play by the new rules and end up paying less in taxes etc since now they don't have the costs of running the special district.  The counties will be left with the bond debt as well as trying to figure out how to now supply that area with infrastructure, fire, medical, water, police etc.

^^  All the above is true under current law....to get to what Ron is claiming will happen would require a rewriting of all the laws and somehow making them retroactive, which isn't in the special district contract.  I really hope he decides to go this route purely for the theatrics of it all.

The thing is I would bet my bottom dollar that this all goes away and is forgotten before anything comes to fruition on this in about a year.

Also it's great Ron's got his own bashing thread. I can come here to see what he has everyone panicking about and get a good laugh.

Interested to see how many Hitler, Vlad the Impalier , Ivan the terrible comparisons he gets.

I don't know if they were the first, but they were pretty close.

List of all the different districts in the state

They are all afforded same variation of the same things whether it's ability to manage particular aspects of their business/job outside the county they are in or to collect special taxes etc.  Basically, these districts are created to ease the navigation of the red tape of state/local governments while being held to the same legal standards and requirements as everyone else

I think I mentioned this in the Florida thread, but that's by design. It's scheduled to take effect next year, after the midterms and the legislative session. That means if Disney falls in line (which is the real goal of all these threats) DeSantis can say, "No harm, no foul" and all of a sudden all those principles about not giving companies special treatment will go away.

It's a classic case of "Nice special district ya got there. Shame if something happened to it."

I'm going to answer this question separately than the Disney issue.  I don't think businesses have a right to a political voice.  I think them being given one is maybe the biggest issue we have in this country today.  I don't know on what planet people think that an entity that has no living pulse should have the power over the political process that businesses do and if I were king they wouldn't.
I think you and AOC strongly align on this issue.

Interesting Fact: An STD outbreak in Century Village in Pembroke Pines about 15 years ago was attributed to viagra. There was a trailer park nearby with some prostitutes and older men would contribute to the local economy on the first of the month after getting their SS checks. I think there's a 4 to 1 ratio of women to men inside Century Village, so some unlucky older women also got HIV exposure. The "Condom Lady" educated seniors about safe sex, I heard one of her presentations complete with a banana.

David Perdue is just like AOC!

>>RUTLEDGE, Ga. — There are few things politicians love more than creating jobs and cutting ribbons.

But what if those jobs are on the wrong side of the culture war?

Plans to build a massive electric vehicle factory in rural Georgia have divided Republicans ahead of their primary next week, with Donald Trump-backed David Perdue criticizing rival Gov. Brian Kemp for offering taxpayer incentives to attract a “George Soros-owned woke corporation whose stated purpose is to combat climate change.”
