Desantis files complaint against restaurant with drag show citing state's 1947 SC ruling against men impersonating women (1 Viewer)

Looks like our small government governor wants to control parental decisions.

Article

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has filed a complaint against a Miami restaurant that hosts a weekly drag brunch after children were seen at the event.

According to The Hill, the video was posted by LibsofTikTok, a right-wing social media account.

In the complaint obtained by the news organization, DeSantis alleged R House violated state law and cited a 1947 state Supreme Court ruling that "men impersonating women" in a "suggestive and indecent" fashion is a public nuisance.

At a press conference on Wednesday, DeSantis said the state's Department of Business and Professional Regulation conducted an investigation at the restaurant and found "not only were there minors there ... the bar had a children's menu."

Drag shows have become a target of Republican lawmakers seeking to introduce anti-LGBTQ legislation not only in the state of Florida, but across the country. In June, Florida Rep. Anthony Sabatini tweeted he would be proposing legislation that would make it a felony and terminate the parental rights of "any adult who brings a child to these perverted sex shows."

The Hill reported that R House's liquor license could be revoked if the complaint is successful.

Speaking with The Miami Herald, the restaurant said it was hoping to resolve the incident and called it a "misunderstanding."

R House and DeSantis did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Should be this like "blackface" in terms of social awareness and offensive to real women?

The only crime it should be is a social crime against real women

Or white women with dreads or black women with blonde hair. We should all fit in the same tidy boxes that existed in 1947.

Good.

I have it on good authority in the other thread that everybody agrees that this incident was deplorable.
What does the transgenders dancers or whatever was going on and invoking this old law have to do with this is what is confusing about this story.

So far, no local official has criticized R House. Including Republican mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez. A city commissioner said if the investigators were really worried about the 2-year, they should've called DCF.  At the recent Miami Swim Week show, some models were wearing loincloth and see through tops. Links below. Probably no age limits, and also no threats from Tallahassee to shut it down for next year.  I'm convinced the R House was targeted because of the drag content, not the near nudity.

A skimpy take on the “loincloth” swimwear trend has taken over the runway at Miami Swim Week – but they’re so tiny, some are shocked.

It's all a political stunt to garner support from the right. If we're really worried about indoctrination and introducing unsavory themes to our kids, things like the Bible would be high on the list.

Before the excuse was "but it's our schools". What's the excuse now?

That is a hair style.

Not impersonating a race or gender in a mocking way.  If were are going to be a woke society, we can`t pick and choose what wakes us up.

Well given the ruling upon which Desantis is basing his legal action, it appears that the drag aspect is central to his complaint.

So blackface would be OK if it is not mocking?  Just dressed up in makeup for entertainment. Part of the arts.
If it had never been used in a mocking way before, yes. Unfortunately it's been tainted because it was used in a mocking way. It's why I can say Brit but not ***.

What a moron.  He should be impeached for not enforcing other laws on the books.

In NC it's still illegal to...

Have oral sex

Co-habitat

Hold a meeting while wearing a mask

Sniff glue in one town

Have sex in a hotel room if you're not married

To lie about being married

There's a excise tax on any illegal drugs you sell

Predict that the sea will rise based upon global warning

Serve alcohol at a bingo game

And of course it's a felony to steal over $1000 in kitchen waste grease.

Who's going to tell him?

I don't know.

I'm not a fan of selective enforcement.  Wish all states would do some housekeeping and cleanup their laws.  I've always leaned towards the side of enforcing existing gun laws before adding new ones.  Ideally maybe one law should come off the books for every new one added.  Want to create a law/code taxing crypto currency...remove one taxing horse drawn buggies.

I agree. Just having a little fun - seems like we've discussed this topic three times now in other threads. Cheers  :banned:

The best thing for the LGBT community overall in America is if there are lots of elected officials in sitting office who are clearly and absolutely Pro LGBT.

That's how you get favorable laws passed, that's how you get those laws routinely enforced, it's how you get judges and Justices that lean that way nominated and confirmed to uphold those laws.

So the answer is the same - You need to win lots of elections. Everywhere. Up and down the ticket.

You know how you lose elections? Like in Virginia, if you lend the reality and perception and appearance that the radical left has declared open war on children and their parents. Most of you have never spent any extended time outside of the "safe bubble" of the Western world. That Loudoun school board that tried to cover up that rape of that innocent little girl, in many other countries, they would have been dragged out into the middle of the street and had their throats cut. Don't mess with people's kids. It's not that hard of a concept.

Glenn Youngkin basically ran on something very simple - Parents, tell me what you want when it comes to how your kids are educated and what happens in public schools, and I'll give you that. Tell me what you want and I'll see that it happens.

Many of his first acts in office were to sign off on laws that gave the majority of parents what they wanted.

So this isn't complex. Everyone here who wants to defend kids in drag shows or around drag queens and the clear pattern of indoctrination and sexualization of children is going to see see like minded candidates to that lose lots of elections. You'll see more and more Conservative leaning people winning office. And what kind of laws and methodology will you see then?

There is also a cross section of the LGBT community that the activist complicit MSM ignores, the ones who also don't want children near strippers and drag shows. Because it casts a negative light and perception on the entire community. Those in the LGBT community are not a monolith.

You pick your battles. Particularly if you are a group that is a minority in numbers.

Some of you don't get that. OK, don't get that. It's enabling stupid politics not to get that. It's inane pathetic political strategy not to get that.

If you play stupid games then you win stupid prizes.

Going to war with parents is just plain stupid. This is NOT the hill that the LGBT community should die on. It shouldn't be the hill that they fight on and over. The focus should be on winning lots of elections for those who support them in a way that generates the good will of the entire community around them, not just other LGBTs and radical leftists and hard line liberals.

Bad politics means all you get is a big bowl of stupid prizes. Some of you asked for it, and it's what you will end up getting.

I really don't understand why the blue tribe is so insistent on being allowed to take seven year-olds to sex clubs, but if you would like to turn the 2024 election into a referendum on this topic, go for it and let's see how that turns out for you.

Isn't the hill being fought over the state limiting parental rights?

This isn't drag shows at schools, where kids are required by law to be present.  This is a drag show at a restaurant - a private business.  No one forced kids to be there, and once the show started, no one forced parents to stay.  What if the kids present were children (or nephew/nieces) of performers?

Here we have the state coming in and saying that parents do not have the right to expose their children to that scene.  If you believe in parents rights to raise their kids as they see fit, you have to support them exposing their kids to things you think are icky.

You are right, GG.  You pick your battles.  The Battle that DeSantis picked comes down, again, on the side of the nanny-state, trying to bludgeon Miami with Tallahassee values.

This did not take place at a sex club.

Should parents be legally allowed to take their kids to strip clubs?  Porno theaters?

Parents are legally allowed to take their kids to movies with nudity, sex, etc.  They are legally allowed to take their kids to a nude beach.

I get what you're saying, but this is a parenting issue, not a legal issue.

I have you ignore, but saw this because it got quoted.

Let's settle this.  You know the TikTok video of the event that we're talking about here.  Post a link to it.  If it's not sexual, then you should have no fear for your account by posting a link to it, right?

If you won't post the link, then go back to obsessing about pigeons.

If we were talking about consenting adults, I'd be on your side here.  It's the addition of kids that changes things.  We routinely block kids from adult-oriented stuff.
It was weird to have a kid there, I would not do that and it should be looked at.

What is Ron’s deal with making this about violating the 1947 law as opposed to the kid shouldn’t be in the bar?

We allow kids to go to rated R movies if accompanied by a guardian.

I really don't think that this is the kind of thing where 10 year olds stroll in on their own.

Further, why should men wearing women clothes and lip-syncing be prohibited from kids?

That's not what DeSantis is doing.

I said political violence will be a widespread reality in America for close to the last two years in the PSF.

At some point, some kids is going to get raped, molested and sodomized by a predator in drag. Should that smear the entire LGBT community? No. But the collective of parents in America will not be and will never be "rational" about their children's safety. The average parent, anywhere around the world, is ZERO TOLERANCE, when it comes to real or perceived risk to their child.

Values and convictions only mean something when you stand by them when it costs you something.

And that's going to be the problem. The next few times an innocent child gets molested and abused, then some parent eventually is going to snap. They are going to be told they are a bigot and they are hateful and they have no right to speak and then they are going to find that school administrator, or school board or "educators" and they are going to start executing them.

Then you'll see this pathway change. Woke radical leftist zealots don't have the stomach for that kind of push back.

The radical left seems intent on seeing how far they can push people. Just keep trying to back them into a corner. Threatening people's children is too far. It's where the line ends. Someone has to be completely stupid to think messing with other people's kids at this scale and this kind of methodology would just be casually accepted. It's effectively social and cultural terrorism.

It's not going to be a drag queen. It's going to some over educated aging white liberal heterosexual SJW male in a position of power that keeps calling parents bigots and racists even after their children have been abused and indoctrinated that goes to his car in a parking lot and won't see the Glock next to his head as the full mag gets emptied into him.

Lots of people are going to die very soon over political disputes, not just these types of conflicts. The trajectory has been heading that way for a long time now.

Some of you still think of politics as some kind of tribal team sport. Some of you want to pretend like virtue signaling would stop you if you saw threat against your own children.

You keep threatening other people's children, eventually it will end. Eventually someone will say no more to that crap and do something about it. And some of you will say that's "uncivil" without asking yourself first if hunting down people's kids like sexual prey is "uncivil"

No, I dont have tiktok.  I did read the article though.
There's a link in the story.  It's highly NSFW which is why nobody will link to it here (good -- I don't want this forum to be a place where I have to worry about clicking links).  It depicts a very young girl being led around by a stripper wearing a g-string (packed with dollar bills) and pasties.  It's not clear at all to me that the stripper is trans, but who cares?  This is wildly inappropriate regardless of the sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation of the stripper.  We're talking "sex worker" here.

I will ask again politely: Please stop quoting me.  Your post is just fine without characterizing it as a response to mine.

Yup. I can take my kid to see Saw where people are tortured for 90 minutes or play video games where the objective is to kill or rob. As soon as T&A pop up: OMG, THE GOVERNMENT MUST PROTECT THE CHILDREN!!!

What if the girl is the performers daughter? Do you think the girl was there against the wishes of her guardians?

I'm sure she was there with the blessing of her parents.  I am fine with CPS checking in on her to make sure she is in a safe environment.  I'm not the kind of person who's going to call the authorities every time I see a kid riding his bike without a helmet or something, but this clears my person bar for "the state needs to intervene here."

I mean, imagine being that girl, and this is the role model you're being offered.  This is the image you're being shown of what a woman is supposed to be, and how society values women.  We're adults -- we understand how to contextualize sexuality.  Preschoolers aren't like that, which is why parents naturally gatekeep this sort of stuff.  The responsible ones anyway.

I think team red has a point when it comes to schools, but I cannot wrap my head around how this isn't:

A) government interesting how they think private businesses should be run

B) government claiming they know what's best for how parents raise their kids.

C) in no way am I arguing morality of drag queens or exposure to kids.  This is purely an argument about the nanny state interfering with businesses and parental rights.
