3.13 - Laura Marling - Once I Was an Eagle (2013)
The English singer/songwriter was one of my favorites of the decade. This album was kind a tipping point between her wide-eyed early releases and the more ambitious and mannered records she's put out since. There are always the Joni Mitchell comparisons that any young blonde singer/songwriter has to deal with but this record bears traces of Nick Drake, Fairport Convention and Led Zeppelin III. Marling is turning 30 in a few weeks and hopefully has even better work ahead.
The four song, sixteen minute suite that opens the album is a stunner.

The first show I had the same take as you. The 2nd show they were awesome. Maybe he's becoming a better showman with experience---but it was a night and day difference.

Rd 3 Good Kid MAAD City by Kendrick Lamar (2012)

Besides all the great ideas and life, this journey through the concrete jungle of Compton is worth taking because of the artistic richness, plus the attraction of a whip-smart rapper flying high during his rookie season. Any hesitation about the horror of it all is quickly wiped away by Kendrick's mix of true talk, open heart, open mind, and extended hand. Add it all up and subtract the hype, and this one is still potent enough to rise to the top of the pile. -All Music

Just like you were able to call my RTJ, I knew this was never falling back to me because you were on it. I remember this album in 2012-13 clear as a bell, and Backseat Freestyle still is a threat to pop into my head at any moment in life (particularly the bars where he spits like Eminem).
One of my top ten of the decade, easy.

Rd 3 - ####ed Up - David Comes to Life (2011)
This record is BIG. It’s an 18 track ‘hardcore’ rock opera with HUGE guitars, soaring melodies, girl group backing vocals, and wildman screamy vocals from lead singer Pink Eyes. This is seriously not meant to be my jam because I don’t generally like rock operas, prog, hardcore, or screamy vocals. I do love me some guitar though and this hits that spot, and while I acknowledge that Pink Eyes is an acquired taste, I don’t think it’d work without his vocals.

I'm going to repeat a common refrain; this isn't my favorite album by this artist, but they are my favorite band and I'm going to need them on my island. Two choices for the decade, but I think this one is the better of the two.
3.15 Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool 2016
Burn the Witch and Numbers are the standouts on this one, for me. I've probably watched the video for Burn the Witch 100 times. Just a beautiful song with a fascinating video to match. As an added bonus, this tour was the first time I got to see Radiohead live and it was absolutely incredible. Lived up to everything I had hoped it would. Now, in the pantheon of their discography, this doesn't touch the mighty triumvirate of "OK Computer", "Kid A" or "The Bends" but it'll do and I'm afraid they won't be around at the turn (though they might be). Radiohead isn't for everybody but boy howdy, they are for me.

4.01 Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest 2010
I discovered these guys back in '08 or '09 thanks to @scorchy or @JZilla who used to make mix-CDs and send them around. There was a Deerhunter song on one of them called "Nothing Ever Happened" and I was hooked immediately. But when I gave Halcyon Digest a spin, I was floored at how much this band had seemed to grow and stretch their musical talents. Check out this little nugget - Coronado. HORNS! I get HORNS! Man, I LOVE horns. And as short and sweet as "Coronado" is, they jump back into trippy, longer tunes like Desire Lines which is going to suck me in every time I'm hitting the marijuana, especially if it's a little rainy outside.
Liking my little collection of 2010-2019 albums so far. Little bit of everything:

Considered it in round one 'cause I figured it could get sniped, but happy it lasted. Incredible, incredible pop on this. Just put it on and my productivity is shot for the foreseeable future. Loving my island so far, much as it could use some sonic variety.
Random aside: Got a black tee from their e-shop at the time that said "This Is Hardcore" in big yellow letters, from the lyrics to Indestructible, and I dig it 'cause it doubles as a Pulp shirt.

4.03 - David Bowie - ★ Blackstar (2016)
This is a record I'll always associate with the weekend between its release and Bowie's death. We were in Paris visiting our daughter who was living there at the time. I took my work phone so I was trying to manage my data and didn't have much space for music. Mrs. Eephus was sick on the last weekend we were in town so I downloaded Blackstar over my daughter's wifi and listened to it on repeat while I explored the city on my own. I can distinctly remember listening to it while viewing the Impressionists on the top floor of the Orsay. The next morning we learned of Bowie's death while in the bag check line at CDG.
For a time after, I found it hard to return to the record; I listened to just about every Bowie album except this one because it was so closely linked with mortality. But I eventually came back to it. Seldom is an album so bleak and difficult also this beautiful. If I can find two sticks on my island, I can spend my days trying to figure out the intricate drum parts.

Just so I don't come across as too devilish, we did not have a dog at the time, we had a cat. We had a dog a couple years later. My brother just couldn't handle listening to a song about a dog that died.

there has rarely been a shortage of musical talent emerging from Iceland, an island that is cast away in the northern echelons of the Atlantic Ocean, but which is rich in cultural and artistic talents, with the likes of Björk and Sigur Rós dominating their respective genres across the world. Icelandic tastemakers have also hoisted Ásgeir Trausti's debut album to the number one spot in the charts, a record which additionally scooped top accolades in the 2012 Icelandic Music Awards. Originally released as Dýrð í Dauðaþögn in his homeland, Ásgeir enlisted the help of John Grant to translate the record into English for this international release, and renamed it In the Silence. The melodic indie folk that Ásgeirincorporates here is poised intriguingly between acoustic instruments and electronic elements, and single the "King and Cross" expertly brings the two together in a charming slice of indie pop. The decision to translate the lyrics was wise and subsequently offers a more wide-spread accessibility to his songs that might not have been possible in his native tongue. Ásgeir and Grant have woven together whimsical tales and stories from the original Icelandic text without many obvious adjustments from the original melodies. Although upbeat for the most part -- "Torrent" and "In Harmony" are particular highlights -- there is a constant hint of melancholy that resides in the beauty of Ásgeir's high-pitched and unnervingly emotive vocals, which is brought out in the more brooding moments of the record. The downbeat and bass-driven "Going Home" uncovers an expansive and pensive side of Ásgeir, which is a welcome contrast to the initial sweetness, and at times tweeness, of his melodies and harmonies. Although it's unlikely In the Silence will have quite the same impact on the charts beyond the shores of Iceland, it does suggest another musical gem has been unearthed from the island's formidable pool of talent.

I like every song on Bang Bang Boom Boom. She has an interesting background. She won star search in her 20s. She eventually got a record deal, and did well fast, but with handling that success she became addicted to drugs, and was also diagnosed with bipolar in her late twenties. She would eventually hit rock bottom, but she went into recovery, and has been clean for almost two decades now. She is huge in Europe, which is mainly because during her heavy drug days record labels and venues here in the States begin not to trust her, so after her recovery she began her road to redemption, and that road led her to Europe. She did redeem herself, and she was welcomed back into the industry in the States, and she has been enjoying creating music and living life for many years now. She has learned how to keep herself in check. She is very talented. She can sing, write, and play several instruments. She is also a great live performer. The person that turned me on to her years ago was my mailman.

I loved their first on Jade Tree. My friends have urged me to listen to this, and when I have, it's been great. Still have never seen fit to get in a headphone session with Pink Eyes on my own, though. I personally love the song "David Comes To Life" off of that Jade Tree release, and the album I've loved every time I've heard it. Time to get on that.

Rd 4 - Frank Ocean - Channel ORANGE (2012)
I’m finding it easier to pick albums from earlier in the decade, just because I know they’ve stuck with me. This was my introduction to Frank Ocean as a solo artist as I hadn’t heard his debut mixtape. Honestly I’m pretty sure it was his coming out of the closet pre-release that made me download the album. I’m so glad I did as after hearing this I’ve gone backwards and forwards with his catalogue and think the man’s a genius. Pyramids is my song of the decade.
