I've been out of the computer repair game for about 10 years now. I'm having a problem where I can ping websites through the command prompt whoever Internet explorer won't hit any sites. I am typing this on my iPad which is working perfectly. Any suggestions on what I should be looking at ?

Try something other than Internet Explorer?

Try browsing by IP instead of FQDN.  Check your hosts file?

I only have explorer on account of having uninstalled chrome when I mistakenly though it was a chrome issue before.  I can hit certain sites like Bing.

I didnt see see a proxy enabled.  How do I fix my hosts file?  Just delete it and let it rebuild?

Sounds like a DNS issue

From a command prompt, type nslookup & hit enter

this should tell you what your name server is. type the name of a site you cant browse to & see if it resolves to an ip address.

if it doesnt resolve, type SERVER 8.8.8.8 and hit enter , then retype the name of the site you entered above.

If the name resolves to an IP address, change your dns server setting in network connections to 8.8.8.8.

Ok typed it in.

www.nfl.com

server: UnKnown

address. 192.168.1.1

non authoritative answe:

e6170.b.akamaiedge.net

Address  23.79.43.102

aliases www.nfl.com

Im no computer exspurt but i had something like this happen before. Something happened where the IP address of a proxy server got hacked or something. Changing that fixed my issue.

I can surf in safe mode.  But not in normal.  In the middle of a clean startup
If safe mode lets you surf fine, its likely something in startup or a plugin in internet explorer.

Type msconfig at the command prompt. Didable anything in startup that looks fishy.

Also in Internet Explorer go to tools, manage add ons. Disable anything out of the ordinary there too

Just got it.  I think it was my anti-virus (Sophos)  so I switched over to Avast.  Never had a problem with Sophos until today.  Thanks for all your help guys.
