If this was a black kid riding through white suburbia & this happened, this makes front page news nationwide... When a white man is basically beaten to death in a racially motivated crime, nobody gives a flying ####.

Yeah...but didn't a black lady save him from further harm?....So that kind of lessens the racial tones of him running over the kid.

This story is sad and tragic, and the people who beat up this poor guy succumbed to rage and racism, but black on white hate crime in America remains relatively rare.

Given the population of the US is 80% white and 13% black, it seems likely blacks are more likely to commit a hate crime on a population % basis than whites. Note your numbers only include whites in the black % but include all minorities in the white %. What percentage of hate crimes are blacks against other minorities?

That is a crime of love. Only white people can hate black people, thus we can ignore almost all crimes by blacks against white unless there is so much publicity around it.

One guy got 6 years in jail, another guy got 1 year, another guy got probation, and 2 more pled guilty and are awaiting sentencing.

The victim has been released from the hospital but suffered brain damage and may never fully recover.

Obviously you're not aware that there is plenty of research out there that suggests that longer sentences do not reduce recidivism. The longer they are behind bars, obviously the longer period of time in which they are incapable of offending against non-incarcerated people. But the evidence also suggests that the longer time they spend inside prisons the more likely they are to reoffend once released.

The longer they are in prison, usually the more hardened the criminal and more criminal activities on their records, so I would expect them to reoffend. If someone walks away from a serious crime without any major repercussion (such as 1 year or just probation), the mental state has to feel empowering. I would have to imagine a thought process such as; "I committed this serious crime, I got caught, and then I barely got in trouble."

At least one of them was charged with a hate crime, but that charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement.
