***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (2 Viewers)

JD probably gone 6-8 weeks with that injury, so best case is that he's back at the beginning of August.  So the team will have traded Kinsler for prospects by then, or be in the thick of a division race. 

 
14 game hit streak for Iggy.  I expect .250/.300/.300 from him, anything more is gravy IMO.  3rd in the AL in defensive efficiency among SSs, and even then I think he's underrated.  He's first in errR which is a measure of essentially...sure handedness which for us fans, is essential.  Basically he makes every single routine play, he is above average at the tougher plays, and even though he doesn't make plays Simmons or Lindor make he's not far off.  In closing, he's damn good at the most important defensive position in baseball.

Good time for a Jiminez update. Another scoreless inning, gave up a hit and had 2 strikeouts.

7 games with Erie, no runs, 4 hits, 1 walk, 13 strikeouts. 3-0 with 3 saves. When you add in his 17 games with Lakeland, he has a combined 24 scoreless innings, given up 9 hits, 6 walks, and 41 strikeouts.  :excited:

I know the Tigers want to be patient and not rush Jiminez, but their bullpen has serious issues right now and barring something unforeseen,  it's just a matter of when Jiminez gets called up, not if. 

Even with the rotation issues and even if Jiminez eventually gets called up, I still would not put Greene in the rotation. Right now is the best I have felt about the back end of the rotation in a long time. But the rest of the bullpen is still a disaster. 

Meanwhile, the Jiminez domination continues.  :wub:

Just hold at the deadline we'll be finnnneeeeeeee... If Avila doesn't bring in another arm for the pen I'll probably be pretty fuming. Mark Lowe and Blaine Hardy probably should no longer be on this staff.

 
Marl Lowe needs to be DFA.

After 67 games this team is one game over 500 despite finding an ace pitcher in a Cracker Jack box. Can this team win more than 85 games?

How in the world in a 10-3 game do you hang the loss on the guy who gives up on one run in the first 6 innings?  The rules for determining the winner-loser are very flawed in a situation like this.  

 
Norris really is our last best hope.  I have to give credit to Ausmus for trying different options, but the well is dry.  We have three good starters and Pelfrey.  Norris really doesn't even need to be all that great to be a major upgrade.  

 
Hard to blame Brad anymore. Tigers have the second worst bullpen in MLB at this point.  Plus with Upton and Lowe eating up 30 million is salary with little production

 
I don't think they can keep Lowe around much longer. It's a dead spot in the bullpen that is already overworked and beaten up. They need to DFA him and when he clears waivers they can send him to Toledo to work on his problems. 

Why hasn't Buck Farmer gotten a chance to pitch out of the bullpen?He has been decent this year and has a pretty live arm. He certainly can't be worse than the likes of Lowe, Ryan, Hardy, and VerHagen.

The back end is solid with K Rod, Justin Wilson, and Greene, but those 3 can't pitch every day. They need a 4th for the late innings and also for earlier important innings. 

It is Joe Jiminez time.  :wub:

 
The Tigers called up Kyle Ryan and Bruce Rondon to replace Hardy and Boyd. They definitely needed the fresh arms.

Rondon has pitched well of late and hopefully he can keep it going up here. He has an electric arm and just needs to have some command. I'm not a Ryan fan but at the very least he has to get LH hitters out.

Can't hurt, keep rotating arms in until they can get someone out!

I can't believe Chris Young is dominating again, 6 runs and 20 hits allowed to the Tigers in 44 innings.  oof

If Fulmer's changeup is as good as its been during his hot streak (no reason to think it won't), then he definitely has ace upside. He has a high 90s fastball with late movement and a sick swing and miss slider. His changeup was supposedly a work in progress but catchers have put the signs down to throw it and Fulmer has thrown it and its been much better than expected. Adding that to his other 2 pitches is the readon he has been this dominant early on.

In addition to the above, Fulmer is not afraid on the mound and has that bulldog mentality that is necessary to get out of jams. That mentality reminds me of Jack Morris and Verlander. 

 
Clean inning for Rondon, with help from Ian, I like that.

If they win this game it's an acceptable 5-5 road trip.  If they lose they'll be 2-11 vs the Tribe/Royals this year, and that really says it all. 

 
Rondon was very impressive and I can't remember his slider ever being that good. His command was also very good. It might be the best I have ever seen him pitch.  :thumbup:

 
Nice job by Miggy losing concentration on the throw over to first, which basically gave the game to the Royals.  What a dumb team.

I think my sons coach pitch team is better at fundamentals and they're terrible at it...at least our coach bothers to point it out though

It's not always the case, because sports and athleticism is fickel but you would have to expect the change to get better the more he throws it and it seems it's already natural to him.

 
Shouldn't have lost the last two series... Story of the season. Avila needs to address the pitching before it's too late. Part of being a GM is knowing when you blew it on someone. Lowe is that someone and needs to go. I said it awhile ago too that I would compare Fister to Pelfrey. Thought Avila was ahead of the curve but the Pelfrey over Fister and Upton  over Cespedes (even with both playing better) signings do not look good right now.

Fister was the bigger blunder.  There is still a chance Upton catches fire.  Pelfrey is Pelfrey, and there really is no upside.

The sad thing is Fister wanted to return to Detroit.   Fister got one year for 7 million.  HTF did Pelfrey get 2 for 18 when there was no market for his services?  Had Detroit not signed Pelfrey he most likely would have had to sign a two way contract for the vet minimum if he wanted to keep playing.

Edit:  Pelfrey throwing BP tonight. 10 hits in 3 innings.

Fister has barely been better than Pelfrey this year and he's been pretty hot lately.  If you guys want to pick another FA pitcher, that would be great.  Pelfrey was the better pitcher last year too, so signing Fister over him was not exactly a no brainer.  These are both #5 starters. 

 
Numbers rarely tell the whole story.  Fister pitched well for the Tigers and had more upside.  It doesn't matter now.   We have what we have.  This team should be better than .500.  

 
Also Cespedes was going back to the Mets, so the Tigers didn't choose to sign JUP over him.

Jesus..they are the same stat wise. I like that Fister only got one year at 7 which is the same type of deal Pelfrey should had been offered.
