***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

Guess I'll chalk up a loss on Pelfrey. No one wants to mention the stinging of Max and Porcello winning Cy Youngs this year? These last 8 years are always going to be what could have been.

Pelfrey's contract has nothing to do with whatever the Tigers decide to do with Kinsler, JD, Mark Lowe, Kate Upton, or anyone else.
Keep Kate around.  Her attitude over JV's Cy Young runner-up status shows that she's got some attitude.  Not to mention other assets.

Can't understand how JV was left off of two ballots.  Give him anything close to the run support that Porcello got, and JV's won-loss record would have been much more impressive ...his record being the primary reason, I assume, that he didn't get a couple of votes.

You do realize that if we had Porcello still we wouldn't have Fulmer and Porcello wouldn't have a Cy Young?

Where did I say I wanted Porcello back or Max on a $300 mil contract?
You sure are whiny about making sure someone reads all of your posts, when you don't read all of the posts you are quoting.  I never mentioned Max. My point was we wouldn't have Fulmer if we had Porcello still and Porcello wouldn't have won a Cy Young if he was with Detroit.

Those 2 guys winning Cy Youngs shouldn't sting at all. They couldn't pay Max that money and Porcello wasn't winning a Cy Young with this team. If Verlander is traded are you going to come back and cry if he wins the Cy Young for the Dodgers, or Cubs?

You sure are whiny for a generic comment.

Oh, and ya I will ##### if Verlander wins a Cy Young somewhere else.

So looking at all-time stats, another 5 years of solid production by Miggy could put him at/near the top ten in major categories.  Should be fun to watch.

I wonder if JV has retooled himself to also have success for another handful of years.  Could he be a crafty enough pitcher to approach 300 wins?  I feel his odds of long-term success are much less than Miggy's.

Bill James' favorite toy calculator gives Verlander a  0% chance at 300.

If we give JV the benefit of the doubt and normalize his 2015 season, his chances rise to 6%.  The calculator has him finishing his career with 244 wins.

244 sounds about right.
300 wins is something of the past, with innings/pitch limits I'm not sure who is going to achieve that number again.  JV is on a HOF track right now, that's why getting this Cy Young was important to his career.  Tampon Bay reporters disagree, but the only HOF they'll ever be in is the Hall of Dooshcanoes.

Edison Volquez just got a 2/$22 million contract.  I'm not sure I would choose him over Anibal Sanchez, so it shows you what starting pitching costs now.

This is one more reason to keep JV. They can't replace him at anything close to a decent price. The rest of their vets are open game if they want to cut payroll & get younger.
Miggy is not going anywhere with 200 million still owed. Hopefully they just keep JV as he is a top 5 starter and having him with the young staff will only help. This team only finished 2 games out with Zimmerman basically being useless since Mid-May, JD missing two months, Maybin missing 60 games, and Victor hurt.

One more run!!!

Melancon got $60 mil and the Sux got Moncada. If JV gets dealt they better get a mint.

Sale going to Nats could result in one or two more wins vs WSox.
For everyone...

Avila needs to quit running his mouth...should have never said Tigers were having a fire sale and "shedding" payroll.  love that word..shedding like a dog shedding its coat.  Anyway when that happens it makes it look like he was desperate and told to "shed" payroll, that knocks down the return.  Dombrowski never said a word..then BAM!

Not sure what Avila's supposed to say, the goal of the franchise is to gradually trim payroll and get younger.  It's not like they are having a fire sale, I think Avila in part wants to see what some of these guys are worth.  The Indians and Orioles are notoriously cheap, so are the Royals.  Indians and Royals are the last two AL champs and the Orioles are always in the race somehow.

I don't think this was the right time for him to push all of their chips to the middle of the table, but that's how Dom operates.  We'll see if Avila is better or worse, but regardless of what happens I won't miss Dom.  He did some great things for this franchise to get back to respectability, but we're in this spot (looking to get younger) in large part because of years of his moves.  Thankfully his last hurrah was to get some kids back or else last year would have been real fugly and there may not be a light at the end of the tunnel now.  He's doing the same thing in Boston.  He has mulligans given what he walked into - great major league roster, elite farm system, top 5 payroll - but what's the rush?  This team was primed for a dynasty, but now they may only have a small window before needing to re-tool.

Los Tigres take Daniel Stumpf in the Rule 5... anyone know anything about him? Looks like a potential LOOGY.

I was joking about bringing Raburn back.  Hard to believe that Raburn will be 36 next season and has 11 years in the bigs.  Made over 12 million and is assured a 100K a year pension and medical bennies for life.  Not bad for a guy who is not really good at anything.  Pays to hang around...

Anyone good enough to stick on a 25 man roster is crazy not to stick around. Every so often guys used to think they could make it elsewhere but nowadays they seem to realize that most other jobs they are qualified for just don't pay like that.

Raburn is one of those guys who works hard, keeps his mouth shut and is well liked.  I guess that probably would describe all the 24-25th men on rosters though.
