***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (5 Viewers)

Hit by Travis Snider off starter and eventual loser Robbie Ray (1-2), it was a soft fly ball to left-center field. Center fielder Ezequiel Carrera raced to his right and seemed ready to catch it. But left fielder Rajai Davis moved to his left, near Carrera.

Carrera suddenly stopped short, pulled back his gloved right hand and the ball fell safely between them, scoring Sanchez and putting Pittsburgh ahead to stay.

Nobody called it, Davis said. I assumed the center fielder is the captain out there.

Yeah, no ####.

Now imagine Doug Fister in the rotation...
Same place we are now? Even Ray has been decent in his spot starts. Smyly was good and Porcello's #'s are essentially the same as Fister's. I guess you could argue Smyly would be in the pen but I blame that more on bringing in Nathan over Benoit... which, even still, DD has tried to fix the pen on multiple occasions this season.

Edit to add: Would you rather have Fister this year and next or David Price for this season and next? That's essentially the game I think people are playing now with these deals. If Smyly is coming out of the pen, I don't think he is viewed as enough to get Price.
And none of these guys hit or play defense and that's been just as big of a problem lately.

I thought Ray did a nice job last night (imagine if Miggy hadn't let that ball roll down the line or Carrera and Davis would have communicated) and Buck a good job tonight (sans the homer).

Buck is thrilled to be going to Toledo. New town, new teammates to get to know! Can't wait!!

QS hasn't really been a probably except for thatstretch in late May/early June.

For all the recent losses that shouldn't have occurred, it was nice to win a game we probably shouldn't win, given that Buck was a call-up from essentially A ball. Back to our regularly scheduled rotation ...

KC isn't going away, this we can be sure of.

I'm not a fan that will boo at games but Nathan probably deserves it, and his reaction is shocking for a guy who is 40 and been around forever. He should have read the past history of Tigers relievers to see where we are coming from, everyone has their breaking point. Ticket prices are up, beers are expensive, parking, etc. Get your ####### #### together Joe and the fans will cheer even when you don't deserve it.

If we had any indication that the guy wasn't giving max effort then there would be an argument to take issue with Nathan.

But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he's busting his butt out there. I'm sure he didn't plan to struggle like this all year. And I don't think the past history of the relievers have any bearing on his situation.

History and ticket prices don't excuse fans from acting like jerks.

I put booing fans on the same level as people who turn into aggressive jerks behind the wheel or tough guys on the internet. They need to grow up and act with some dignity. I'd be embarrassed if my kids saw me booing a guy at a baseball game.

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Seattle Mariners

Site: Comerica Park in Detroit

Records: Tigers, 65-54 (2nd in AL Central); Mariners, 65-55 (3rd in AL West)

Schedule

Friday: RHP Rick Porcello (13-7, 3.11 ERA) vs. LHP James Paxton (2-0, 2.38 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD, MLB Network

Saturday: LHP David Price (11-8, 3.11 ERA) vs. RHP Felix Hernandez (13-3, 1.95 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD

Sunday: LHP Robbie Ray (1-2, 5.31 ERA) vs. RHP Chris Young (11-6, 3.20 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD, TBS

Scouting the Mariners: Former Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson will make his much-anticipated return to Detroit for the first time since being dealt to the Mariners as part of the three-team trade that sent David Price to Detroit last month. Jackson has struggled in Seattle, hitting .250 with more strikeouts (13) than hits (12) in his first 12 games. It's also a reunion of sorts for Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon, who spent eight seasons on the Tigers' coaching staff and is considered an early frontrunner for the AL Manager of the Year Award. The Mariners, who will seek a season-high fifth straight win Friday night, have won eight of their last nine after completing a three-game sweep in Toronto on Wednesday, and now trail the Tigers by just a half-game for the second wild-card spot. They sit in third place in the talent-packed AL West Division.

Andy Dirks starts his 3rd rehab assignment tomorrow in Toledo.

GAME NOTES

-- It's a homecoming of sorts for a handful of former Tigers, including Austin Jackson, who was traded to the Mariners last month as part of the three-team deal that brought David Price to Detroit. Jackson has batted .250 with 13 strikeouts and 12 hits in 12 games with the Mariners. He will hit leadoff for the M's tonight.

-- Former Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, who was named the Mariners manager this past offseason, will also return to Detroit. McClendon served as the Tigers' bullpen coach for the 2006 before acting as the hitting coach for seven years under former manager Jim Leyland.

-- Rick Porcello has worked at least seven innings in each of his last five starts en route to a 1.75 ERA. He was initially scheduled to start Wednesday, but had his start pushed back two days after tossing two innings of relief in Sunday's 19-inning marathon.

-- The Mariners took two of three from the Tigers from in late May and will seek a season-high fifth straight win tonight. They have won eight of their last nine after completing a three-game sweep in Toronto.

-- It can be argued that this weekend's three-game series is the biggest series of all time between the Tigers and Mariners. The Mariners currently trail the Tigers by a half-game for the final AL wild-card slot.

-- The forecast in Detroit calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures steady near 73 degrees. No rain is in the forecast -- all weekend.

I always thought like this until Jose Valverde, then I changed my mind.

I never really had a ton of faith in this Tigers team but I also think the Royals are peaking too soon. They are basically doing what the Indians did in September lat year, but only a month and a half too soon. I thought they'd win the division but this is ridiculous, they aren't this good.

Porcello sucked tonight, I'm watching the Wings 2002 SCF game 5 on NHLN instead.

NEW YORK OF THE MIDWEST -- The flick heard 'round the world. Joe Nathan walked off the mound after getting the final out of the ninth inning Wednesday, put the back of his hand to his chin, and gave Tigers fans another reason to boo him with zeal the next time he jogs onto the field.

Yeah, we speak Italian gestures here. We know what you meant, Joe.

Maybe Nathan expected something a little different when he signed a contract to join the Tigers. He had spent most of his career in Minnesota, after all, with all the lakes and smiling Scandinavians and Garrison Keillor stories. All the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all of the closers are above average.

But this is Detroit, man. The Motor City. We bring lunch pails to work. We wear hard hats. Our collars are blue. Allowing runners on base isn't going to fly here. If Joe Nathan didn't know he was signing with the Yankees of the Midwest, well, that's his problem, not ours.

We expect perfection. We are the Tigers. We have four World Series to our name. How many do you have?

* * *

Joe Nathan has done everything poorly. He's pitched poorly. He's communicated poorly. He puts runners on base. He blows saves. He's said some things about teammates and fans he shouldn't have. And now, he's used an Italian gesture to tell them just what they can do with themselves.

Joe Nathan is the antihero. You don't have to like him, but he's going to play a key role in any successes the team has. If you want to see the Tigers hoist a trophy, spray Champagne and celebrate a fifth championship on the streets of Detroit, you're going to need Joe Nathan. Period. You're going to need him to be a little better than he has been. But you're going to need him. You may as well just reconcile yourself with that right now.

No denying, what Joe Nathan should have said was this:

They have all the right to be mad because they're paying whatever kind of money to come here and see a good show. But I want them to understand that we're really trying. We don't want to give it up, we don't want to lose. We're in a really tough stretch and this is when we need the fans the most. As soon as the team goes outside and sees the atmosphere outside, the fans in the game, we feed off that. We feed off that and that's what we want to see, we want the fans to keep backing us up.
Those were the words of Victor Martinez. They acknowledge the problem, the team's role in the problem. They ask for patience. They ask for help. Victor Martinez wants a ring. And if he gets one, he will be a hero.

Neither Joe Nathan nor Victor Martinez should be the story today, though.

You are the story.

* * *

"Just because you can doesn't mean you should."

I guess we see things a bit different here. Sports can be a great spaghetti Western, a melodrama, us vs. them. If you don't take it too seriously anyway, it can be pretty fun. The "us" part of the equation is Detroit and the Tigers. The "them" part of the equation is EVERYBODY ELSE WHO GETS IN OUR WAY. Cheer the white hats -- or in this case, the navy blue hats with crisp, white Old English D on the front -- when they come onto the stage. Boo the black hats when they make their entrance. The message gets a bit mixed when you boo the white hats, too. Who are the good guys here?

Damn it Joe, you put on the wrong hat.

It's hard not to feel the loss of fun a little more each year. 2006 was a great year because it was unexpected. Those were carefree times. You sat back, you enjoyed it. Today, the demands have grown as high as the payroll. Fans seem angry that the team won't win 100 games. They are downright perturbed that every game isn't an easy victory, that a starting pitcher allows a few runs and doesn't go seven innings, that a batter grounds into a double play. Heads are demanded. Pitching coaches, batting coaches, managers, players. The best person for the job is whoever doesn't have it now.

Look, this is draining -- this constant criticism, this negativity. This is not fun -- unless you're in New York or Philadelphia, anyway. I don't know about you, but I've never had much respect for a New York sports fan, and I sure as hell do not want to act like one. I sure as hell do not want our fan base to be compared theirs. But that's what we're becoming. We are becoming spoiled. We are obnoxious. We are not easy to live with.

Nathan pointed that out poorly. Martinez pointed it out tactfully. We are not New York. Stop acting like it.
Bless you boys dot com

GAME NOTES

-- There's a marquee pitching matchup tonight in Detroit as newly acquired starter David Price battles AL Cy Young Award frontrunner Felix Hernandez in a should-be pitcher's duel at Comerica Park

-- Hernandez won the AL Cy Young in 2010 and Price in 2012. They have combined for 10 All-Star appearances. The past four AL Cy Young winners will be in attendance tonight (Price, Hernandez, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer).

-- Price is 11-8 in 23 starts with a 3.19 ERA and leads the AL in strikeouts with 205. He'll make his home debut for the Tigers. The last time he made a start in Detroit, he came within an out of throwing a complete game for the Rays on July 6.

-- Hernandez has made 16 straight appearances in which he's pitched seven or more innings while allowing two earned runs or less. He enters today's game with an American League-best 1.95 ERA among starters.

-- The Mariners won a season-high fifth straight Friday night and have won nine of 10 to take a half-game lead over the Tigers for the second AL wild-card slot. They remain 6 1/2 games behind AL West-leading Oakland.

-- The Tigers, meanwhile, have lost seven of 10 to drop 1 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Kansas City, who has won nine of their last 10.

-- Keep an eye on Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera. He's back in the lineup tonight, but he jammed his left thumb in the first inning Friday when he placed a tag on Austin Jackson, who was running out a ground ball.

-- The forecast in Detroit calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures steady near 79 degrees. There's a 75 percent chance of rain around 8 p.m.

@GeoffBakerTIMES: Brad Ausmus walks to mound, opts to keep gasoline in can for now

43,833 in the park tonight, biggest crowd since Opening Day. What a moment when Price struck out Jackson! Standing O after he gets out of that 1-out bases loaded jam and Cano on deck.

That's what you call earning a win ...good for Price.

After the game, the Tigers announced they were calling up former All-Star closer Jim Johnson from Triple-A Toledo and sending down reliever Melvin Mercedes.

GAME NOTES

-- Robbie Ray will be making his second start since being called up earlier this week to fill the spot vacated by starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a chest muscle injury.

-- Ray will essentially fill the turn in the rotation initially intended for Justin Verlander, who will miss his first career start for health-related injuries due to inflammation in his right shoulder. His status remains unclear at this point.

-- Miguel Cabrera has been tabbed the designated hitter today. It's a day game following a night game, so it's expected. But he was also struck on the left elbow by a pitch Saturday, and he jammed his left thumb Friday, so keep an eye out.

-- For the second consecutive day, Ian Kinsler will bat leadoff. Ezequiel Carrera will hit second. Manager Brad Ausmus said he envisions Carrera being a leadoff hitter, but wants him to be more consistent at the plate before putting him in that role.

-- As expected, veteran closer Jim Johnson has arrived and will be available for the series finale today. He will wear No. 49. To clear a spot on the active roster, the team optioned reliever Melvin Mercedes to Triple-A Toledo.

-- The forecast in Detroit calls for decreasing clouds with temperatures warming rapidly into the low to middle 70s. Occasional showers are expected, so don't be surprised if there's a rain delay at some point today.

After the game, the Tigers announced they were calling up former All-Star closer Jim Johnson from Triple-A Toledo and sending down reliever Melvin Mercedes.
You can tell that either Avila or Dombrowski is making the moves this year, while Leyland was the guy making the decisions in the past. They are swapping relievers like Kardashians swap NBA players.

I guarantee they won't lose today.

Season recap:

  • 27-12 - best team since Bless You Boys of '84; more speed, better defense, pounding the ball
  • 9-20 - Nathan is the worst. Jones, Valverde, Rodney, et al were better than this bum
  • 17-5 - divisional title is a foregone conclusion
  • 13-19 - how is this even possible with our SP (.684 OPS since the ASG, almost 100 points lower than the first half)
This is more fun than Cedar Point.

JV with his first missed start due to injury in his career. He's going to pick up a baseball tomorrow. Not sure what's going to do with it, but he will. Looks like Buck Farmer will be starting one of the games in MIN this Saturday. Actually, he might get called up even if JV avoids the DL since they can add a 26th man for the DH.

Kinsler is slumping but then again so is everyone not named Castellanos.

Doctor Detroit said:
I wonder if Fister could get a run home from third with less than two outs, because that's what this team really needs.
Yes..with a suicide squeeze. Doug "Cy Young" Fister.
