***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

109 pitches through 7. 1-0 lead. Ausmus, time to earn your keep here. Price pitching well: Bring him out for the 8th? (I'd think so) But then what? Sanchez? Soria? Or the ol' party line of Joba then Joe. S's >>>> J's. Show us your wisdom, coach.
There is about a 99 percent chance it will be Joba and Nathan. I would let Price go as long as he could and let Soria close it out.

Oh, please

Next time Brad deviates from the script will be the first

Congrats Tiger fans. Even though they struggled a bit down the stretch I think the Tigers are a shoe in for the WS. With those 3 starters I don't see anyone in the AL competing in a short series.

Also Kinsler is my 2nd favorite Second Baseman in MLB.

Good Luck.

The Tigers have been barely a .500 ball club the last 5 months.

Congrats Tiger's and fans. If my Twins could play the Tigers every day we be 500 :P But Tigers still have the best talent in the A.L. and had the determination to win the central. Good luck in the play offs. Enjoy the ride Tiger fans  the Tigers never gave up.

The Royals had a great season and made one heck of a run towards the division title the last half of the season. Definitely cheering for them in the playoffs as long as it is not against the Tigers.

So as near as I can figure out this is how Ausmus has pitching set up

If there is a game 163 it will be Verlander

If there is a wildcard game: It will be Scherzer

If they won a wildcard game: It would be Verlander/Price/Scherzer/Porcello/Verlander

If they win division: Scherzer/Price/Verlander/Porcello/Scherzer
That seems to be the obvious rotation. Sanchez will be the first guy in if someone gets into trouble.

What is the scouting report on the Birds? Can we handle them? Looking forward to playing a different team than the As..and an east coast team so the games will all get over at a decent time.

Yes, I like the eastern time zone games.

Went 5-1 in regular season vs Birds, not that that means anything now.

Here's your Baltimore homer scouting report.

O's greatest strength right now is the back of their bullpen. Ever since they picked up Miller from Boston at the trading deadline, they've essentially been playing 6-inning games. If they're up after 6, they turn it over to Miller/O'Day/Britton, and it's almost always lights out. Also Tommy Hunter sometimes, and Brian Matusz if there's a lefty match-up Buck wants to attack prior to getting to Miller. 3 LHs in the back of the pen gives him a lot of options.

The other strength is their HR power. They don't get on base a lot but they go deep a lot - have hit more than 200 HRs for 3 straight years.

Biggest weakness is that when the HRs don't come, they can really struggle to score. They do not manufacture runs at all. The other big weakness right now is 3B defense. If they had Machado, I think they would be a legit World Series threat, but without him, I don't think so. Their starting pitchers don't strike out a lot of guys, so they rely on a strong defense. Third base defense is terrible right now and you know how the post-season always finds your weakness and exposes it. Also, their starters have been very good this season, but they're really not overwhelming in any way. I think the Tigers have just the kind of lineup that can wait for the pitch they want and then punish it. In particular, Chen struggles sometimes vs. solid right-handed hitting and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Tigers hit him hard.

I guess the O's other strength is Buck Showalter and their intangibles. Buck has truly had a great season, to the point that I began talking in the Orioles thread about whether or not it's possible for a manager to get "hot." In particular, for a while after the All-Star Break, it seemed that every single move he made turned to gold. The Orioles really expect to win and I don't think the moment will be too big for them. Every guy on the team knows and accepts his job and will be ready when they get called - wouldn't surprise me at all to see a guy like Delmon Young come through with a pivotal pinch hit at some point.

Jones and Cruz have hit Scherzer hard in the past, but he didn't face the Orioles this year and the bottom 5 guys in the lineup have either never faced him or have gone 0-for in limited appearances, except JJ Hardy who has really struggled. I'm pretty sure Camden Yards will be as mental an environment for a baseball game as you've seen - way more like an NFL crowd than baseball. Going to be pretty cool when Markakis leads off the home half of the first for his first postseason at-bat after almost 1400 regular season games (he was out for the playoffs in 2012 thanks to a wrist broken by a Sabathia fastball in mid-September, which I'm still bitter about). He's been through a lot of bad years and it's cool to see him got this shot.

I think it will go 5 games, though not every one of the games will necessarily be a tight affair. If the O's don't homer, they could get beat pretty badly, and if the O's get into the Tigers bullpen, they could end up putting up some big numbers. Can't wait until Thursday!

I do like Buck better than Brad as far as managers go. I know we gave Leyland crap but I honestly think Tigers would have clinched weeks ago with Grumpy still at the helm. Ausmas looked very much like a rookie manager this season. Should have been cutting his teeth in Toledo for a couple of seasons.

Old Grumpy finished exactly the same one game ahead. But I agree with Buck over Brad.

From last season to this season Leylands WAR is a +3 over Ausmus. ;)

Plus he looks a lot cooler with the new facial hair. I bet young Ausmus can't even grow a beard.

thanks for this, confirmed a lot of my own thoughts but I've only seen them a few times his year and haven't paid a ton of attention because I didn't have any of them on my teams. Their offense is like Oakland minus the walks, so streak prone, but the pen is stacked. Need to get out to early leads.

Andrew Miller has turned into a quality LH-RP. Just looked at this years stats and he has 103Ks in only 62 innings of work. Pretty impressive.

Being a UFA what kind of contract will be out there for Miller? At only 29 with that K-ratio some teams may be looking at him as a closer.

Showalter said a couple of weeks ago that, in Miller, the O's might have the off-season's top free agent closer in their bullpen.

He was kidding a little bit, but I think Miller will definitely be looking for a situation where the team is interested in signing him as a closer.

Any chance we'll take Tyler Collins to the ALDS over Ezequiel Carrera?

Could use a good PH, and Carrera as a late inning defensive replacement just doesn't make sense. Guy can run in a straight line fast, terrible at taking angles, below average glove/arm.

I think so. Collins seems more capable at the plate for sure and Carrera is no better than Davis in CF. Just stick Davis in and live with it.

FOUR IN A ROW
Here is the last time a team has won at least four consecutive division titles in each of baseball's six divisions:

American League
• Central: Cleveland Indians, five (1995-99)
• East: New York Yankees, nine (1998-2006)
• West: Oakland Athletics, five (1971-1975)

National League
• East: Philadelphia Phillies, five (2007-11)
• Central: No team has won four consecutive division titles since baseball expanded to six divisions and added the Central Division in 1995.
• West: No team has won four consecutive division titles since baseball split each league into two divisions in 1969. (The Atlanta Braves did win the NL West in three straight seasons -- 1991-93 -- and then won the next 11 NL East Division titles -- 1995-2005. There were no division champions in 1994 due to the baseball strike.)

--

I'd of course love to add a WS title (and a second WS appearance) to the four division titles. Beyond that, it'll be interesting to see if the Tigers can keep the streak alive. But it's the WS championship that makes it all legit.

No need for the Tigers to worry about the O's pitch count, it appears, since they'll be in no rush to get to the O's bullpen. Detroit just needs to strike early and/or take quick advantage of the starters as they weaken in the middle innings. I'm really hoping the extra rest will help Porcello, who reached a new high in innings pitched this year. All our starters need to avoid the long ball. They can pitch out of jams - they just can't afford the big hit.

Chance that both make it if they go 4 starters/7 RPs/14 position players.

I am managing a team and I am trying to make a decision on who I should use as my closer:

Player A: 35 Saves, 7 Blown Saves, 1.53 WHIP, 4.81 ERA, 54 K's, 25 BB's, in 58 innings pitched

Player B: 18 Saves, 2 Blown Saves, 0.99 WHIP, 3.25 ERA, 48 K's, 6 BB's, in 44 innings pitched.

I am really scratching my head here. Any suggestions???

Hey jon_mx, what do you think of Joe Nathan?
I hate to keep on being "the devils advocate" but here goes: One guy can be used in multiple positions, the other can only be used as a closer and costs too much to be cut?
he has been mostly effective the last couple of months, I don't feel great throwing him out there but I feel better than I ever did with Jones and Valverde. Let Soria pitch us out of late inning jams, give Nathan the clean slate and hope for the best.

UNOFFICIAL PROJECTED STARTERS:

GAME 1 PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS

Detroit Tigers

RHP Max Scherzer (18-5, 3.15 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Orioles: 3-1, 3.92 ERA

Baltimore Orioles

RHP Chris Tillman (13-6, 3.34 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Tigers: 3-0, 3.58 ERA

Note: Scherzer picked up his 18th win in his final start of the regular season on Thursday when he allowed two runs over six innings against the Twins. The reigning AL Cy Young would be pitching on two extra days of rest in Game 1.

GAME 2 PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS

Detroit Tigers

LHP David Price (15-12, 3.26 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Orioles: 7-3, 2.82 ERA

Baltimore Orioles

LHP Wei-Yin Chen (16-6, 3.54 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Tigers: 1-0, 4.91 ERA

Note: Wei-Yin Chen pitched Saturday and slots to be the Game 2 starter on one extra day of rest. It's possible Showalter could go with Miguel Gonzalez for Game 2, but Chen makes most sense. Price, meanwhile, will be pitching on normal rest.

GAME 3 PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS

Detroit Tigers

RHP Justin Verlander (15-12, 4.54 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Orioles: 9-2, 3.43 ERA

Baltimore Orioles

RHP Miguel Gonzalez (9-9, 3.33 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Tigers: 0-2, 8.47 ERA

Note: Verlander will not be shifted to the bullpen. Not now. Not if Anibal Sanchez rejoined the rotation. Not this postseason. Despite a disappointing 2014 campaign, Verlander allowed just one run and didn't walk a batter in each of his last two regular-season starts. The past two years, he's combined to throw 17 shutout innings with 21 strikeouts in two Game 5s in the AL Division Series in Oakland.

GAME 4 PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS (if necessary)

Detroit Tigers

RHP Rick Porcello (15-13, 3.43 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Orioles: 3-5, 4.28 ERA

Baltimore Orioles

RHP Bud Norris (15-8, 3.65 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Tigers: 0-3, 6.57 ERA

Note: In Porcello's last five starts, he's posted a 6.20 ERA and a 1.906 WHIP, while allowing opposing hitters a .368 batting average and a 1.000 OPS. It appears he has hit a wall of sorts. Norris, on the other hand, has been one of the Orioles' most consistent starters and rounds out their rotation. Side note: Baltimore right-hander Kevin Gausman has a 3.57 ERA spanning 20 starts, but he'll likely be the odd man out and could be used as a reliever in the playoffs.

GAME 5 PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS (if necessary)

Detroit Tigers

RHP Max Scherzer (18-5, 3.15 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Orioles: 3-1, 3.92 ERA

Baltimore Orioles

RHP Chris Tillman (13-6, 3.34 ERA)

Lifetime vs. Tigers: 3-0, 3.58 ERA

Note: Game 1 of the ALDS will take place in Baltimore on Thursday, and a potential Game 5 is scheduled in Baltimore for Oct. 8.

Soria has had one save opportunity and one hold in the last seven weeks. While I like MAC-32's idea he's the inherited runners specialist and Nathan is the bases empty or beginning of the 9th closer, I'm not sure Ausmus agrees. I have no idea how the manager wants to use him - he's never defined his role or used him consistently.

Jones worst year with the Tigers, he had a save rate of 86%. Valverde had an incredible save rates of 90%, 100% (49 for 49!!!!), and 88% in his three full seasons as a Tiger. He started to lose it at the end of year three and into the playoffs and quickly became worthless. Nathan is at 83% this year. I fear that is where Nathan is closer to the last year of Valverde. Both Jones and Valverde were much more effective than Nathan as a Tiger has been. Soria has been having a better year. Yeah, Nathan has been a little better lately, but nothing to give confidence that the Angels won't light him up.
