Joel Hanrahan will undergo a second Tommy John surgery.

Terrible news. Hanrahan previously had Tommy John surgery in May of 2013, but hasn't been able to make it back to the majors. He visited a specialist this week after soreness in his elbow lingered and now he's headed for another surgery. The veteran reliever can now be ruled out through the early part of the 2016 season.

It will never be like that for that long again. At least I hope not. TV revenue is at an all time high as well as ticket sales.

 
We have the worst farm system in MLB and most of the prospects we have dealt haven't panned out so I don't have a lot of confidence on it getting better

Most of our core players are on the wrong side of 30

Illitch is 85...what happens when he's gone?

I don't think it's the right time to worry about it as a fan, but this is why I think talking contract extension with Price right now is a bad idea.

Tigers have averaged 88 wins a season for the last 9 seasons and will probably hit or better that mark again this year. To be relevant every season for a decade straight is quite a feat in MLB given roster turn over and free agency. The core players are getting older but that is because they were the at the top of their positions at times in their careers and were retained. As far as the farm system goes DD has traded quite a bit of it away..but a star player has yet to emerge from the group that he has traded.

Nathan will be gone next season and maybe Price..that is 30 million dollars off the books right there.

They've a decent number of solid young players, lots of money, big crowds, and Dave Dombrowski. I think as long as that remains, they will be ok and never bottom out like the Phillies.

Their string of success has made it tough to get top talent via the draft and they haven't unearthed many later round diamonds. It seems like their international program has been focused on Venezuela. It's produced some major leaguers but Avisail Garcia and Eugenio Suarez aren't doing anything for the Tigers.

JD, Iglesias, Castellanos, Shane Greene, 2 catchers, plus a host of maybes (including Gose and a bunch of pitchers).

I wouldn't call any of them a bet to be a star - with the exception of JD and perhaps Castellanos. But there's enough solid talent that you can fill in around them with a stud or two here and there. Plus its not like JV, Miggy, Kinsler, and Anibal are 40. They are 31 or 32.

Former Tigers left-handed reliever Phil Coke has agreed to sign a minor-league deal with the Cubs, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Coke, 32, was 5-2 in 62 games with the Tigers last season with a 3.88 ERA. He registered 41 strikeouts and 20 walks in 58 innings pitched.

He reportedly turned one offer from another team before accepting the Cubs' deal.

Apologies if I read too much into your statement, but the idea of him having a great year because his contract is a huge motivation for him implies he's going to try extra hard now. ie he was to some extent half assing it before. Which, imo, is absurd.

I'm with you on Amaro, he's bad to the point of negligence now. Dombrowski's obviously had a great career, and he's always kept teams in contention with superb trading, but if Verlander and Cabrera both collapse, I think it's going to severely hamper his efforts. Maybe the Yankees are a better possible comp., where they haven't completely crashed, but they're a high-payroll team that's suffering under some contracts they'd rather not have. Winner's curse, and all that.

No, not at all. He's gonna be 30 next year and his performance has been a mixed bag thus far. He needs a great year to maximize his returns, otherwise he's a candidate for a one year deal somewhere. I have always liked him, I think he plays pretty hard in the field which to me says everything about a player.

 
Pitching bible compares Shane Greene to Doug Fister, saying he has similar upside and should be a solid middle of the rotation guy for some years. That would certainly be nice.

I know expectations are lower this year, but how is this team worse than the team a year ago? I think the Indians are going to be really good this year and the Sux and Royals might be right there too, but I think this Tigers team is better than it was at this time last year. Up the middle they might be one of the best defensive teams in baseball. When was the last time that happened? Mid to late 80s? Price, Verlander, Sanchez, Greene, and Simon is an above average staff at worst, and the bullpen at least has more options and what should be an anchor in Soria.

Gotta figure Big Nick continues to get better, that the boppers continue to bop, and the team has more speed than its had in a real long time. Count me as cautiously optimistic. :shrug:

 
If everyone stays healthy then this team is good. The problem is there is no depth at just about every position. Most teams have a couple players they can't lose due to lack of a plan b, or because that player is just that special. They're everywhere on our roster though.

If Verlander is close to what he used to be this team is better than last years team. Greene and Pasta are solid 4-5 guys. Iggy is a huge upgrade at SS. The bullpen has to be better...right? Would like to see Nick get to the 280-20-80 area this season. Looks like Romine is going to be the new Donny Kelly. Just wish Romine could hit 250 with a little pop but that will not happen.

Me too. He's so brittle. If he can't play on a regular basis we're stuck with a Perez/Romine combo at SS. Simon better pitch well since we could have used Suarez if that is the case.

also: Left-hander Kyle Ryan, fighting for one of the final bullpen spots, looked sharp getting all four batters he faced. "I really liked his sinker," Ausmus said. "I think he can really get lefties out. He's tough on right-handers but extremely tough on lefties. And he's not scared. We saw that last year."

I was more comfortable last year with Max, Smyly and Porcello because I knew exactly what they bring to the table. Price is a solid ace, although Max is better. I think Verlander 2015 will be much better than Verlander 2013/2014. Hopefully Sanchez can be healthy this year and can produce like 2013. I think there is a lot to like about Greene, and he could very well end up being the Tigers best pickup of the offseason. Simon has never really pieced together a really good full season as a starter. IMHO, the team would be better off using Kyle Ryan as the #5 starter, and moving Simon to the bullpen. Simon has been extremely effective in the bullpen which is a much bigger need for the Tigers. I could even see trying Simon in the closer role if/when Nathan falls apart. But that won't happen, although it should. Long term Ryan needs to be a starter for Detroit, and that is how they should use him.
