It would be huge if Collins can continue to hit, having that lefty in the middle of the lineup at least breaks up the all righty brigade. Avila near the end of the order would also help a little.

Beau Burrows, RHP, Weatherford HS (Tex.)
[SIZE=12.8000001907349px]For the 88th time in 89 years, Detroit is taking a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher. That might be slightly hyperbolic, but it sounds right. I actually was the high man on Burrows, as I see a hurler with a plus-plus fastball, and a chance for two above-average offerings with solid-average command. That being said, taking him over a guy like Nikorak or Drew Finley is a bit of a stretch to me[/SIZE][SIZE=12.8000001907349px]—t[/SIZE]hough[SIZE=12.8000001907349px] I don't know what those players' bonus demands are. It's not a huge reach, but I wouldn't exactly call this a best-player-available approach. [/SIZE]

They took college OFer Christian Stewart with the 34th pick (the one they got for Scherzer), has power but projects as a LFer who doesn't have much speed. Seems like a bit of a reach but this draft is both week and of course a crap shoot like most MLB drafts. I thought they'd take another pitcher at 34 since it didn't seem any bats really stood out. Bad draft to have two higher picks, not much talent here.

Yeah, I didn't vote for Cespedes. That would make me no better than a KC fan.

Amazing what a few strong SP outings will do to the win column ...not to mention a lot of hitting. lol Nobody wants to be the one dropped from the rotation when JV returns.

They haven't had a 5th starter since Lobstein went down. Price, Anibal, Greene, Simon...JV.

Agree with how important it is to get some good starts though, Price and Simon have done their part but Greene and Sanchez haven't. I don't love JV getting the Indians his first start either, but at least it's at home.

DD, the bolded was rather tongue-in-cheek. I consider the four to be safe, but other than Price, the others have had some stinkers of late. I'm just glad to see a string of quality starts.

Robby Ray could have been #5, he's dealing again tonight at teh Doyers. People spent all last year complaining we had him, now we might spend many more complaining we don't.

I would love to go see the Tigers play a day game in Wrigley, but they have two night games during the middle of the week. Might still try to do one game. Seeing them play the Red in Cinci would be kind of cool too, but the same situation.

I've got tix for the two night games in August ...taking my son to one and future DIL (who grew up in Detroit and a Tigers fan) to the other. Day games at Wrigley are the best, though. I'm not sure I like the new scoreboard. Part of Wrigley's appeal was the backdrop of buildings outside the ballpark, both across the street and in the distance. The new scoreboard (with another still to come) break those sight lines.

Always got to watch Cubs games thanks to WGN (had to put aluminum foil on my antenna just to pick up WJR on the radio on a good night) and if we had a field trip for tee ball/little league it was to Wrigley. Seen more games there than any stadium. Just a great environment when the sun is shinning. The night game will not provide quite the same atmosphere, but still lots of memories watching the cubbies play, even if not my favorite team.

Let's circle back to what we were talking about last night. I stand corrected, they should send Greene down to let him get right and use Ryan or Lobstein as the 5th starter. He's not doing us any good pitching like he has been but I think he has the stuff to be a middle of the rotation guy. Needs to work on his mechanics, release point is inconsistent.

I was a big proponent of making McCann the back-up and platoon guy this year, but he's better than I thought he was gonna be with the bat. Throws out about half the baserunners and hits some too? Awesome.

I don't think they'll re-sign Avila at this rate, partly because of the head/knee injuries and partly because McCann can probably handle 130 games next year. It's too bad about Avila, he's a great defensive catcher and his OBP and power are enough to keep him as a platoon catcher. I can't think of a team with a better situation at catcher but maybe the Orioles with Wieters and Joseph or the Giants with Posey and whomever. I think we have two really good defensive catchers who can also hit. McCann has a lot to learn on how to handle a staff though, having Avila finish the season healthy would be beneficial for that progression.

I thought of our exchange as I watched Greene implode last night! At least JV gives us options along the lines that you suggest.

As to McCann, we've had a number of solid contributions from some of the newbies, which is encouraging for the future.

With so many player contracts up and so many of them having good years (seems to work out that way), Avila can't be at the top of their re-sign list.

 
I'm really looking forward to seeing JV return on Saturday, but what happens if 2015 JV is the same as 2014 JV? Is there a backup plan?

I am liking McCann more and more. Not many catchers could have made that play he made on that foul ball..and then popping right up and running toward third because Nick was in a shift. That kid can run.

Not sure they would need a backup plan. 2014 Verlander was 19th in the AL in WAR, so there is still value there as an innings eater. By all reports he looks better than he did last year, but it all comes down to location. He isn't going to average 94 on his fastball anymore but the great Verlander we saw in the early part of the decade located his pitches, 2014 Verlander couldn't. Once he starts walking guys he loses his composure and everything else goes downhill.

Even JV 2014 was a decent #3 guy. JV 2013 was a decent #2 guy. With Price and Simon pitching like #1 guys, a JV somewhere between 2013 and 2014 would be acceptable, and I think is conservatively realistic to expect at least that. Sanchez is showing some signs of turning around, but he has been disappointing given his contract. Greene is a real wild card right now, but I think Ryan is a pretty good #5 guy. I am optimist that starting pitching will not be a problem.

 
Nesbitt probably should go down so he can pitch regularly. At the same time, they need to get rid of Gorzelanny. He has been terrible for most of the season and lefties are hitting over .300 against him. I could see keeping him if he could at least get lefties out but without that he is useless.

It is weird that the mist consistant strengths of this Tiger team is the bullpen and defense. Hitting and starting pitching has been very sporadic, great at times and pathetic at others.

 
Pretty sure Miggy baits some pitchers with no one on, then gets them with runners on base. He certainly has a history of that with Danny Salazar and I wouldn't doubt he did it. Ted Williams said he never gave away at bats but he liked to study the pitcher the first one or two times through, basically laying in the weeds at times.

Yeah, the only real obstructed view seats (and believe Tiger fans know what this means) are in the LF corner. Only obstructions in 321-33 are fat people.

 
They should just re-sign Price tonight, seriously. I don't like him more than I liked Scherzer (and I was the biggest Scherzer guy out there), but I don't like him any less either.

For Miggy it is just a pop up.

 
Pretty impressive win ...a 93 pitch complete game by Price, a 452 foot home run to dead center by Cabrera, and a spectacular double play by Iglesias...one of the best I have ever seen.

 
Assuming there are no setbacks today, Victor Martinez will begin a rehab assignment Sunday. He will play 4 games and if all goes well he could be back for next weekend's series.

 
Fastballs at 92, 93, 94, 93, 94, 94. 93, 93 and three curve balls in which two of them found the strike zone. 93mph 3-1 fastball to Brantley and he could do nothing with it.

Good first inning helped by Gosefacekilah!
