***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (1 Viewer)

Right when you are getting ready to write this team off, they pull one out.  They need to start getting healthy.  Look at the lineup.  Presley, Collins, McGehee, Aybar, Romine.  Sounds more like music legends or something.  Who are they guys and how can they win?   Right now these team is being held together by a staff of rookie pitchers.  Rookie pitchers and journeymen for the win.

Oh, this team. They still have time but it's one of those things where the roller coaster of the season feels at a low point at a really bad time.

 
This team needs to get healthy and soon.  The guys they are putting out there are incapable of winning much.  Romine is horrible.  Most of his RBI's are on walks.  And Upton has to start earning his paycheck.  No way they can catch any of the teams they are chasing.  

 
Great outings by JV and JUp.  They need to get about 10-12 games over .500 in the next couple of weeks if they want to compete.  Not seeing that happening with the current guys playing. 

 
Orioles, Mariners, Astros, Royals, and Yankees are all flawed teams and all of them have issues like the Tigers do.  The next 12 games are against the two worst teams in the AL and the White Sux and Royals.  If they go 4-8, they are done.  If they go 8-4 they are probably right there with the Orioles as the #2 WC.  This Cleveland team reminds me of the 2006 Tigers, I don't think there is much chance of catching them.  Still, I'm hoping they are in the playoff race in September and the next 14 days will determine if that's the case.  All division games plus the Orioles at home and the Braves on the road from here on out, that's not exactly murderer's row.  23-15 is 88 wins, that would be about what they need to get a WC. 

 
I don't know what the team's record is with Maybin vs. without but he is a complete difference maker when in the lineup.  So glad he came back early.  If only this team had Zimmermann and Castellanos for the stretch run, it would have been fun to see how things played out.

Not really, but I like how you think he is.  He's 63rd among 85 qualified pitchers in WAR, just behind Ricky Nolasco.  His xFIP is 11th worst in the same group, just not good.  Robbie Ray on the other hand is 27th in WAR (ahead of Michael Fulmer) and 4th in xFIP.  He looks like a really good middle of the rotation arm going forward. 

 
Better be careful. Soon enough Gopher idiot will know that mentioning Doug Fister pisses you off more then anything on the planet earth. You've still been wrong on both the trade and Pelfrey over Fister but whatever man, it's long over.

 
You're wrong because all they've got to this point is a reliever spouting a 5.00 ERA. Don't forget that the next season, a season that they could have used Fister, he had over a 4 WAR. They traded, what was at the time, a #2/3 starter for a minor leaguer who has needed 3 years to develop into a back end of the rotation. It was a bad deal that you bent the facts on. You also have gone out of your way to act like a ####### high school bully when anyone suggested Fister on a 1 year deal would have been more logical then throwing $20 million on turdzilla Pelfrey. Your rhetoric has no bounds to show that you have the hottest of hot takes and your #### doesn't stink but really you're just being arrogant.

Go on. Explain to me how they got the value of a #2/3 starter or explain how a over a 4.0 WAR isn't a 2/3 starter. Enlighten me chief. You know everything, clearly.

 
I'm sure there's a GIF out there, but Dr D's boy Duffey's reaction, after giving up a 1st inning Jack to Miggy tonight, might be the best moment of the regular season. 

 
Favorable pitching matchups over the next week.  Of course our bats have gone missing vs. some pretty bad pitchers this year, so who knows.  Would be nice if we can pick up some games in the wild card race.

JV and JUP with very good nights.  Tigers actually creeping back into the division race.  The wildcard race is going to be just that....wild.  A ton of teams within a few games of each other

I think it's important to stay close to the #1 wildcard, and they're only 2 back after tonight.  KC is on fire right now, five teams for two spots and six if you want to include the Yankees who are also hot. 

 
I mean all things considered, does anyone think this team should be better than they are right now?  JD, JZimm, Big Nick, and Maybin have had significant DL stints and we've leaned heavily not on just one, but three rookie starting pitchers.  The bullpen is good for a few weeks, then it sucks for a few weeks, then it's good again.  K-Rod has been pretty good but he's had his shaky outings, Pelfrey is not even serviceable, Anibal looked like a DFA candidate now looks good again, and Brad was making some terrible decisions early in the season.  They lose eight straight, they win seven straight, they score five runs in four games, then they score 8 runs or more in four straight. 

It's been maddening but kinda fun too, right?  :oldunsure:

Was up north over the weekend and only heard about the ejections. After watching the replay V-Mart went way too far in arguing the strike call.  It looked a little low but I have seen that same pitch called a strike hundreds of times.  So you step out and say a little something while looking at the pitcher then get back in ready to hit.  When I heard about it I thought Everett had a quick hook but actually he took way more from V-Mart than most umps would have.  Then when V-Mart put his hand on his hip and turned back towards to ump a minute into the discussion he should have been tossed.  Every MLB player knows that is a no-no.

Detroit — Manager Brad Ausmus admitted the move wasn’t based on analytics; it was more of a hunch.

He decided to drop Ian Kinsler to the No. 2 in the batting order and put Cameron Maybin in the leadoff spot.

“Change his luck, maybe?” Aumus said, meaning Kinsler’s. “He’s been barreling the ball up, but getting under it sometimes, and sometimes hitting it right at people. We’ll see if this helps. There is no mathematical formula behind it.”

Kinsler’s batting average has dropped 21 points, from .292 to .271 in the last 14 games. He’s gone 5-for-55 in that stretch, with a .180 on-base percentage. But supporting Ausmus’ point about Kinsler hitting in some tough luck — his batting average on balls put in play is .073 in that 14-game skid.

Such a low BABIP screams for a correction.

Plenty of time for a manager to get out there, protect one of his stars, and make sure he doesn't get ejected.  Ausmus chose the obviously better time to get tossed...defended his hitting coach.  If things are close at the end of the year, this game will be one to look back at.

Right now he is just day to day and they expect him back soon.  He might be the one everyday player the Tigers would miss the most.  He is not only playing great ball, but he also lifts all the other teammates up.  Still a couple weeks away from getting Nick back. 

 
Call me crazy but I'd put Norris in the bullpen when JZimm comes back.  Leave Anibal in the rotation and let Norris open it up a little in the pen with a 35 pitch max pitch count.  I'd like to see him get the confidence to go with this terrific arm, and regular work sets him up to be a great #4 starter next year.  Needs to work on his pitch location and how to best employ his fastball, I think letting him do that in the middle innings is going to benefit him.
