Dexter Mccluster (1 Viewer)

Just read at rotoworldnthat Dexter Mccluster will be used as a multipurpose back, and speculating a "reggie bush light" role. Now i have in in a dynasty type league and have to trim my roster to get ready for the draft. Had every intention of dropping him as a rb, but am noticing MFL has him listed as a wr, so maybe he has some value there. With Charles and Jones i cant imagine much of a role, but had to ask what anybody kniws/feels about the situation there.

Here is the rotoworld post

(TheHuddle) Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley indicated WR Dexter McCluster likely will be used out of the backfield this season because the team did not have the offseason to teach him how to be a slot receiver. McCluster likely would be used as a multi-purpose back instead of just a third down back.

Analysis: Hmm, multi-purpose back? Could he be Reggie Bush lite? He's elusive, but we'll have to see just how much he's used before we can say he'll be a fantasy option.

Not sure how he's looking this preseason, but I was here pimping him prior to last year. He's one of the more dynamic college RBs of the past couple of years, so this could be a good move by Haley.

I have him in a dynasty league (no PPR) and thought last year he would be "reggie bush lite" even then. I watched a couple games of his in college and thought he was electric then.

I think patience is appropriate for this kid as the Chiefs appear intent on finding ways to get the ball in his hands. This year could be telling. If you can hold on to him this year and see what happens.

For value purposes I will be cutting him from my keeper team and targeting him with a late pick. While undersized, as was said by KPB the guy is "electric". After seeing him in college, at the Senior Bowl, and at the Combine, he strikes me as one of those players that tends to fly under the fantasy radar but once the light goes on it will go on big time. Maybe the delay in production was caused by injury, lockout, coordinator, whatever....but IMO the guy will produce and when he does I hope it's on my team.

I remember he was hyped up a bit last year, and while he was good when he played, he just is not on the field enough to be a reliable starter unless you get PR/KR yards and it is a 14+ team league.

I agree with the last sentiment, but want to add that special players usually find a way to get on the field. I think he's a fine dynasty stash player

I play in 12 team leagues (so 14, 16, 32 team leagues may have a different take), but using "multi-purpose" when describing a RB, is always the kiss of death IMO. Kind of like buying into the "we are going to use both backs at the same time" coach hype that always occurs during camps.

I get what you wrote, but what about that some had them dipping a toe in the water considering trading Charles?

CBS Sportsline has him listed as WR as well. That increases his value in my league substantially. Anyone know if they ever change position listings mid season?

He is a listed as WR in Sportsline and he should get around 8-10 touches a game between handoffs and quick passes. Plus he can be had in the 12th round or later. He should be on your value list for all those reasons. I was able to take him in the 15th round last week. RIDICULOUS value there.

Almost dropped Dawan Landry to pick him up but something made me not do it.

My gut says that his ceiling is essentially Darren Sproles, which means he has value as a backup, but will always be a tease as well.

Dude is like 180 dripping wet. I just can't see him running the ball on anything more than end-arounds and screens, and no more than 4-5 touches a game. Give him a generous 7 ypc and that only comes to 28-35 ypg, and with a few catches, say averages 2-3 for 15-20 (he is not a deep threat, more of an underneath guy), you're talking about a high end of 5.5 ppg in most leagues.

Everybody is taking a wait and see in my league and I'm sure he'll have one of those breakout games where he breaks one long for a TD and everyone will rush to scoop him off the wire. But I also bet he hits the wire again that same season.

:twocents:

I had the pleasure of watching him play at Ole Miss, where he shredded top SEC defenses, and led the Rebels to 2 straight Cotton Bowl victories. He's elusive, quick, with great vision, and very strong for his size (he outlifted LeGarrette Blount in the combine, by a lot). He has a great work ethic, and will be one of the hardest working guys in the locker room, which may earn him some additional playing time. In a dynasty league, I would advise patience. His fantasy value is going to be based on opportunity, but if he were to get the opportunity, he could be productive. Here's the bottom line with McCluster - he's a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

CBS has switched Brad Smith to QB already but left McCluster at WR - I don't think they usually switch mid-season. Since he's a flex player at best though, it probably wouldn't really matter in most leagues.

8-10 a game? Thats RBBC territory. Think Hightower, Forsett, Ricky Williams type touches from their 2010 seasons.Remember Jones still appears as the starter and got 245 carries last year. Until something changes 8-10 for Mcluster seems a ways off to me.

It's 4-5 runs plus 4-5 catches for a total of 8-10 touches a game. That's according to the coach. I don't know how it will really pan out, but it doesnt matter too much since he costs you less than a 12th round pick. I got him last week in the 15th round. What WR that you draft in the 15th round or later do suppose is going to touch the ball 8-10 times every game? For comparison, I snagged Big Mike Williams last year around the same time and he produced well with just 4 touches per game. McCluster should be even more valuable. No one should ignore a guy like this so low on the draft boards.

I contacted CBS Sportsline to see if they would be switching him to RB as I beleive they should since he now plays RB. Here is their response.
I apologize but we will be keeping his position as WR in our system. We have contacted the Cheifs organization and they have him officially listed as a WR.
Which is kind of weird, since they identify him as a RB in their news blurb about him:
Chiefs RB Dexter McCluster continues to be the team's best preseason player in 2011, as a combination runner and receiver. He lined up in the backfield more times than not Friday against the Rams, but he was still featured as a pass-catcher en route to five receptions for 37 yards. McCluster did carry the ball once for 4 yards as well in the loss. (Updated 08/27/2011).

You're just the guy that has to ruin it for everyone, aren't you? Like when the vending machine is selling cans of soda for 5 cents instead of 50 cents, instead of stocking up you're the one who calls the Coca-Cola vendor to have it fixed. Glad it backfired on you and CBS is sticking with their original setting.

I remember at our old swimming hole in the coke machine, the Cherry Coke selection would spit out free cans if you just banged on and shook the machine, could get like 10 free cans, so we'd each pay 5 cents and like 5 people on lookout duty

I'm a bit intrigued at his prospects as a WR3 in Cbs leagues this year! If he is able to get roughly 5 catches and 5 runs a game he could consistently produce 4-5 points a game without even counting any breakout yards after catch or TDs.

Does he make any sense as a less expensive handcuff to Charles than Thomas Jones. If Charles gets hurt I would think McCluster's role would increase as a compliment to Jones but the question is how much.

You have to understand that 5 catches was coachspeak. That would be 80 catches. That's just not happening, or anything close to it.
