with only 5 games to play, NO fighting for playoff seeding, and Brees being as hot as he's ever been... he is currently on pace for over 5000 yards, and Marino's record is an attainable 5084.

Anyone think he'll do it?

I don't think he'll do it, but it'd be a great story if he did. What a year this guy is having.

Despite 6 consec 300+ yard games with a 500+ thrown in, he is still not on pace to break the record...

He has been buoyed by a bunch of bombs recently, and I don't think you can expect that to continue...

I'd be very surprised if he eclipsed 5000...

But the fact that it is even in the conversation is pretty impressive!

I agree that he won't reach Marino, with some expected regression to the mean. But as TU said, the fact that we're even talking about it shows what kind of year he's having.

What a pick-up by the historically hapless Saints.

Well see, once the offense figured out how to use Bush and McAllister (took a few weeks), Brees and the passing game went into orbit. When you have an anomaly like a 98-yard scamper from a guy who averages 2.8ypc and never breaks a big one, you can take it out and consider it against the norm. When you're breaking multiple 70+ yard TD passes per game, that's not an anomaly, but a trend.Whereas we'd think that these long bombs are just coincidence and "buoying" his numbers, as you say, his 6 consecutive 300+ yard efforts beg the question of whether this is the norm for this passing attack, and I think it is.I expect his Oct/Nov numbers to continue, not his entire average (which is including september).Because of that, I think there's a real chance he can break the record. There are too many talented players on this Saints team, and having two burners on offense that simply can't be matched up with is a problem. Play-actions keep buying Brees the time to go deep, and they will continue to work as long as he has a dual-backfield of two of the most explosive RBs in the league.

I can't speak for his other games, but the bomb this last weekend against ATL was alot of luck. To have your #3 or #4 WR come up with a last second hail Mary isn't very common. I would be extremely embarrassed if I were a member of that ATL secondary. I know they are decimated by injuries but they didn't even bother to play Copper. It's like they didn't think he would catch it or it wouldn't count or something. Some of the effort, or lack thereof, being displayed this year in the NFL is sickening.

Somewhere, Saban, the MIA GM, and the owner are crying.

I wasn't more wrong about a player this year than Brees. Off a serious injury? Lack of weapons, more run-oriented, etc etc....I laughed when someone overpaid for him in our auction.

Meanwhile I got Bledsoe pretty cheap, ditto Portis. I was all set.

:bag:

Perhaps, but that was one 48-yard play, and without it Brees still has 300 yards on the game. The guy has just been on fire.

I think I have a full blown man-crush on Drew Brees. I hope he shatters all of these records.

...and I am LOVIN' my Cullpepper for Brees trade after week 1.
